I sometime don't know what to make of Iowa fans and what they expect of the program and coaching staffs. Fran may not be the country's greatest coach but face it fans were not the greatest school to coach basketball at. Very few in State top prospects compared to others. Look at Illinois with all of the in state talent we have in state. Illinois hasn't been to a final 16 in 17 years. We cried so much about our last AD he left and was named AD of the year at Stanford before being named head of Big 12. We now say Barta doesn't know what he's doing but most of the sports teams are doing very well. Wake up Iowa fans you remind me to much of Nebraska fans as were getting to be entitled.

No, Iowa fans expect a coach paid millions to put a staff together that can help him recruit top level recruits and an assistant that specializes in defense to teach the team how to win a game defensively when their offense isn’t getting it done.

Iowa hasn’t won a B1G regular season title in 40 plus years and has won 3 B1G tourney titles in 20 plus years. Iowa fans expect a coach to be able to put together solid teams, contend for a B1G regular season title some years, make the NCAA tourney and win a game or two at best. If they get on a roll and win three and possibly four, the fans and state are ecstatic. Iowa fans aren’t spoiled, they are tired of saying, why not Iowa?!!! when you see a team like Saint Peter’s make a sweet sixteen with a student population of 1,800 students. But keep on blaming the fans for the failures of the sports programs. Jeeesh.

It’s about trends. Illinois’ past two ADs are awful, but their current one looks promising. He’s injected so much life into the athletic department, especially basketball, and he hasn’t been there that long. People complain about Barta, I think, because he’s the “old guard” … there’s less optimism going forward.

Also, as a Chicago Illini fan, it’s been my experience that fans of other Big Ten teams who live here (often times lifelong suburban kids) have an irrational need to drag down the Illini to validate their little club of local supporters. Understandable but bizarre behavior.
