*****South Dakota vs Iowa Game Thread*****

I'll give it to Mulvey.

That dude is excitable.
He got it from his old man...

What, you don't want an annual home and home with Kansas in November? Lol. Yeah, they are great fillers, early season confidence builders and opportunities to test out different stuff. It's all good so long as it goes as expected.
I was at the Iowa game at KU Allen Fieldhouse when Iowa came back from down 15 in 2nd half to win & halt a 60 some game (if I remember correctly) home winning streak for KU. Awesome game. Iowa should play KU, Mizzou more often.

Good game without Freeman. Dix is underrated. Decent game by Dembele, but still looking tentative on defensive. Nice stroke on jumpers. Pryce back to reality, but will be a big contributor in a lot of games. Thelwell and Traore were really good portal pick ups, even without much NIL. Team has really good depth.

Really happy for Mulvey, who must have almost doubled his career stats in one game. Seems very aware on the court, but vertically challenged. Showed he can provide a few minutes against larger less athletic centers, if needed.

Thelwell needs to be the starting PG. he got more minutes tonight which was good. But Iowa will lower its ceiling the more they rely on Harding as the primary lead guard.
I was a Harding fan but to me he's been unimpressive so far. I thought he played better last year. It's early but I'm really liking thelwell

Yes to both. Get my tickets.... ;)

Watched the game on delay. This team is going to get manhandled by any team with athletic talent. Hope I'm wrong
I watched five minutes of the game, so take this fwiw (my haters will tell you not much): this Iowa team will be like every Fran team—on fire some nights, a YMCA rec team on other nights, no defense, no rebounding, no toughness, and no changes.

They probably go something like 9-11 in the conference. 9-2 in the non-conference. 18-13 overall.

They’ll get to 19-12/20-11. Heavily on the bubble. If they get in, goodnight after round 1

Broke down the game to find out who was responsible for South Dakota scoring and this is the break down. Pryce 15, Dembele 14,
Dix 12, Brock 8, Traore 8, Payton 6, C. Koch 5, J. Koch 3, Thelwell 2, Brauns 2, Mulvey 2.
I'd keep the starting lineup the same as I love the fact the Traore, and Thelwell provide experience and athleticism off the bench, both will play a lot if heathy. Iowa is going to be a better team then the the so called experts have predicted. Love the 2 point guards of Harding and Thelwell, two different players that get the job done in their own way. Hope that Mulvey can get more experience going forward as he would be a better back up to Owen then Brauns.

Agree with most of your post.
I do think brocks size will mean BIG pgs will go after him with a vengeance on offense.
I think he can be a good momentum changer guy off bench vs other teams subs.
Mulvey showed a pulse ..hope he can contribute in a pinch.

Off topic here, but can someone tell me what the 'tape' or whatever it is that Payton has on his shoulders? I think Traore has something like that too.
P.S. I think Traore will be a big help - I am impressed.
Kiniesio tape for soft tissue injury.

Really enjoyed the interview with Lon Olenjzak talking about his friendship with Kenny Arnold, who was a great person and one heck of a player.

As I see it, Thelwell should start & Dix backs him up at pg when Pryce enters the game. Traore should absolutely be starting. Better all around player than Dembele. Fran needs to shorten up the rotations a little and Brock could be the odd man out. Smaller quick change of pace for maybe 3-5 minutes per half. I would never ever play Thelwell & Harding together. Last night was a disaster when they were on the court together. Thelwell showed he can finish at the rim & stronger on D end. Harding had a couple of nice passes, but also 5 TO's. 6 assists, but again consider the competition.

Mulvey & Brauns are emergency back ups only. Dembele at back up center & Koch as a stretch 4 backing up Traore.

I want every damn one of you optimists to call me out if I am wrong. But....I don't see this team getting to NCAA tourney; and quite frankly that shouldn't be the goal. Coming on 30 years without a Sweet 16 appearance.

Not optimistic beyond Hawks being a fringe bubble team.

Impossible to project a BIG race until we have seen other teams in league.
Snippets from last nites Illini game discouraged me...that Riley kid is better than anyone we have.
MSU looked familiar- tough.
I know IU is loaded.
And OSU.
And RU with lottery pick frosh.
MD has hotshot frosh.
UCLA always has talent but Oregon, Wash and USC seem beatable.
NW is pesky.

The league ain't the best but will probably be just good enough push Hawks down to bottom half.

That sounds about right. I will say I saw more athleticism and defense in this team than in years past. Early games are always hard to gauge, but it did kind of have a second round NIT game/teams feel to it. Having said that, I will reserve judgement until they play some better competition.... ;)
