Iowa Gov proposes $7,600 to all private school students

Here's the issue.

They are using $7,600 per student - I don't know how they are determining that number. But if they are saying the cost to educate 1,000 students $7,600,000 then it's a problem.

Because if 20 students leave, that's $152,000. Is the school district going to save $152,000 when 20 students leave? I don't think so, when you look at the fixed costs of buildings, busses, maintenance, insurance, administration, etc, etc, etc. The 20 students might come from 10 different grades, so you don't save on teachers.

The costs of running a school are not that variable.
And now it comes out that it really isn’t about the students, it’s about keeping the benefits for teachers, grandiose schools, etc.

The public school system in Iowa is like the Black Hole of Calcutta swallowing up every dollar that gets tossed its way.

You can’t throw enough money at it as it always needs more and the product it puts out keeps getting worse and worse.

It’s pretty clear that our public education system is failing when looking at rankings. Why not let the cream rise to the top? Don’t we want that option for everyone, regardless of income level? Expected more from demz

Exactly.

Again, simply, why should I have to send my kid to the same school that all the shit heads send their shit head kids to? Just because I cant afford the better options?
Just because you can’t afford better options? Is this a joke? What a load of entitled bullshit.

You don’t have to do anything. You could move, you could run for school board, or you could keep electing the ghouls that will probably pass this legislation.

My assumption would be plenty of those shitheads will be sending their kids to private school. In fact, I think I found one

Well if you think that can’t be done at public schools that says something too. Ever considered that maybe you should devote at least some of your energies towards finding solutions to the problems you think exist in public schools?

If for no other reason than the fact that no matter how much you think vouchers are a great idea, only a small percentage of kids will actually be able to take advantage of them.

And I speak as someone who attended catholic schools k-12, but have subbed extensively in public schools. There are pros and cons in both systems. To argue that private schools are without flaw and nothing good can be found in public schools is dishonest.

There's a sizable Hispanic population here in northwest Iowa. Spoiler alert: they don't attend private schools.
Yeah, I knew that remark was bullshit when I heard it. It's why I asked for the proof. Zip/zero/nada.

Next thing you know and some of these clowns will be talking about Mennonite/Amish private schools as examples.

Deep down, they know this voucher program is not a wise move. But they are so blinded by politics that they defend anything emanating from Terrace Hill.

I mentioned earlier about that discussion I had with my daughter about private schools. She stated that it costs approximately $10,000-$11,000 per year to attend DM Christian. You want to guess what that tuition will cost when that school knows parents are getting $7,600/ student?

US News has Iowa at #18.

This one is #20

This one #41 :(

This one #19

Iowa has lost it's top tier ranking, but it's still doing pretty well according to "most" sources I've seen.

There are 10 times more students in public school v private. Why not focus our energy on improving the schools the vast majority attend rather than giving them a bail out card?

Thanks, thought I read it was 64 counties.
I wonder if the different numbers have to do with whether private schools are available to children from K-12 rather that elementary or secondary only schools? I wouldn't be surprised if only 35 counties had opportunities for students to attend private school from K-12 grade.

Ok fine. Then why do the schools keep asking for more money? Is that going to buy the public schools a set of nuts so they suddenly get the behaviors out? Nope. This 'drag the failures along' mentality is pervasive in education these days. The same people that push for inclusivity in everything else in life want to avoid, at all costs, expelling anyone. Even to the detriment of the achievers.

Id say that we need to return to SCI and BD classes again and enough of the integration.
they ask for more money because what they get never keeps up with inflation alone.

proof of failing? what metric? other than ones from alec/koch bros/devos/rightwing think tanks. This is about how do republicans keep voters 10-20 years from now. Shelter and ignore at home and in private schools.

Public schools are tasked with educating EVERYONE, Gus. And everyone MEANS everyone. Behaviors, disabilities or not. EVERYONE. Laws are written and must be followed. Sorry Gus, this is not about you. And ever so, it doesn’t change the fact that public taxes should NEVER be spent on educating those who choose to attend private/parochial schools. Meanwhile state legislatures need to figure out what they can do to support their public schools And stop worrying about low-towing to their political base.

No one has yet answered the question of what happens if more students want to attend a school than they can accommodate. Whose choice is it then?

The private schools will be able to claim physical space should allow them to cap enrollment and Dim Kim will grant some waiver.

This program has "corruption" written all over it.

No special needs kids or kids with behavioral issues will be admitted.
