Iowa-Indiana 1983

They're airing the Big Ten Elite episode on the 1981 Indiana team that won the national championship on BTN.

Iowa swept the season series with the Hoosiers, but unfortunately that year was another case of Iowa athletics BAU. We finished 13-5 and 2nd place in the Big Ten behind 14-4 Indiana, and lost in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament to Wichita State.

Fart noises.

IIRC, the game was tied and Iowa had the ball with under a minute to go and Lute called a TO he didn't have.

Iowa beat Indiana twice in 1983 and Indiana won the conference. Some frustrating losses. I went to Madison that year. Wisconsin was terrible and only won 3 Big Ten games. Unfortunately Iowa was one of their wins. Wisconsin had freshman by the name of Ricky Olson who had a career day. Game was at old fieldhouse.

I was at the '81 win over Indiana in the Field House. A wild night with Isiah Thomas getting the heave-ho for throwing a punch at Steve Krafcisin, and Landon Turner clanking the ball off the back rim on a breakaway dunk attempt.

The '83 Indiana team had three big cry babies in Ted Kitchell, Randy Wittman and Uwe Blab. It was a huge win at Assembly Hall with everything stacked against us.

Was that the game that Thomas and Boyle cracked heads? If so, I was there as well.

Absolutely could not stand this guy because of this game.

Two of the Indiana incidents that fries my biscuits is from the Tom Davis era when Hawks were in the 1-2-1-1 full court press with the inbounds pass being challenged from the baseline. Knight had the player inbounding the ball throw the ball full throttle into Kent Hill and Brad Lohaus' face with the ball bouncing off; a total BS thing. Still bugs me to this day. I'm sure in todays game it would be a T and possible ejection. This happened in 2 separate trips to Bloomington.

One thing that always mystified me about Davis’ press was that about 40% of the time, the Iowa player pressuring the inbound pass would reach across the end line and actually step on or over the end line — a clear violation I only remember being called once or twice in all the years he coached.

Game was on Wichita’s home court. Glad they did away with home court advantage in (men’s) NCAA. I believe it was a second round game because we had a bye - only 48 teams back then I think
Cliff Livingston. Antoine Carr. Following year they added Xavier McDaniel and Aubrey Sherrod to the roster. Little kid courtside at Bradley games that team was intimidating. MVC was really good back then. Nolan Richardson had some legit squads at Tulsa. Dick Versace had dudes at Bradley. Bob Donewald had solid teams at Illinois State.
