I don’t want to consider life without Josey Jewell, but next year is going to be the build.

Can we beat out Purdue and Wisconsin? That’s the question. I know we have the pieces to do it, but we’re going to have to improve at a number of positions to make it possible.

Wisconsin is quite a ways ahead of us and they are pretty young. Hard to see us passing them although they probably will have a tougher schedule than us next year. Purdue is up and coming and we have them on the road next year, so they'll be tough too. Not sure about NW next year, but they are always tough for us. We should have a better record next year with our easier schedule, but I'm thinking 2nd, 3rd or 4th in the division is the most likely outcome.

I know this is most likely a tounge in cheek dig at Nebraska fans lurking tonight but I am concerned about Northwestern. Purdue I think we will get some revenge on. Wisconsin I still see as a loss... even at home. Remember... We get Penn St. again as well.

Actually, we lose almost our entire defense and we have four other players who might leave a year early.
Wisconsin’s offense will be better in either event but Jim Leonhard will be playing a lot of younger kids next season, cupboard isn’t bare but we will miss the 7-8 players we will lose on defense.

Iowa's D loses only two players that it probably can't replace given who is on the roster--Jewell and Niemann. Bazata is tough to replace, too, but Iowa's D-line is deep. Jackson in the secondary will be the toughest to replace, but it looks like Hankins could help with his loss. And I think Iowa COULD be better at safety if it plays Geno Stone and Amani Hooker and sends Gervase to the bench. Jewell and Niemann, we'll miss them a ton. Niemann was great in coverage as a hybrid linebacker/safety. Losing Bower will not hurt; should be an upgrade with someone capable like Hooker who has been sitting on the bench for no good reason (like Geno Stone was until Taylor went out of the game today)

Thanks. I thought I heard that on one of the Iowa podcasts I listen to that they were pretty young. They will likely take a step back, at least on D, if losing that many, but they seem to be pretty good at reloading in recent years.

Watching Indiana v Purdue, and ESPN just showed a graphic of 3 year Captains because they saying how Bentley was one of three current power 5 three year Captains. Guess who was not on their graphic or announcement. It's so aggravating how disrespectful these media people are of Iowa, and Iowa players.

Winning more games cures that, media always goes with the hot teams and were FORCED to cover Iowa in 2015

I say let's do it.

We're not going any worse than 9-3 next year so might as well......

Maybe Jackson stays another season. They were pointing out yesterday that he is great at man, but needed work in zone coverage, if that is true, it might be beneficial for him to return. It depends on where the NFL scouts predict him to go in the draft. D line next season should be good, LB's untested but the back end, even if Jackson goes pro should be solid. If the Offense comes along like they should, the D would not have to be as good. I think Toren and Kelly will be a good one two punch, and the line should be solid with Wirfs and Jackson getting experience, and Daniels back at Center. Fant and Hock should be stronger and better run blockers next season, and Fant shoud be a beast for teams to match up with. I think anything less then 9-3 next season, barring major injuries would be a major disappointment. Easier schedule, probably no Barkley at Ped State and Wisconsin will have a tougher schedule, so I think we have a chance in the West. Wisconsin is better then we are at this point, but Stanley is a better QB then Hornibrook and if we can give him any time at all, Iowa can beat Bucky next season.

Jackson hasn't announced any decision. Let's not write him off just yet.

The line backers will be tough to replace. Huge loss in a system that relies heavily on its linebackers. The D line not so much. Nate B is a good but not great player. The younger D line seem to be bigger and have a higher top end. If they play has hard as Nate the D line should be much stronger (again, a year to bigger, faster and stronger).

Bold prediction: Iowa flips Purdue and NW for a record of at least 9-3. Hawks still have a huge talent disparity over Purdue. Iowa played a terrible game against Purdue. We were a missed field goal from beating Wiley in regulation. Playing at home.

Stanley is not better than Hornibrook,at least the Wr's and Te's are better at Wisconsin.Fant is a grt TE thou.
Badgers will score points next year, in bushels but we need to reload on defense , the pieces are there but they need to mesh.

Iowa has the best TEs in the Big10 in 2018 ... don’t think that will a question. I think Hornibrook is good but Stanley is going to be really good, just needs more reps. Badgers D has been just lights out ... can they do that again next year?

Iowa loses just two next year, Penn State and either Indiana or Iowa state. Then they go to the title game against MSU.

Purdue plays Ohio St., Mich. St., and Iowa in a 3 game stretch. Plus games with Northwestern and Wisc...they will not be in the race for the West.

I would beg to differ. Hornibrook had the better offensive line, more consistent running game and better WR's. The question with the Badgers is can Hornibrook win a game if the running game struggles, Stanley already has, bringing them back to beat Iowa State on the road. Bucky can keep Hornibrook. The only stats that Hornibrook has over Stanley is completion % and rating. TD's vs INT's aren't even close. With all due respect, Hornibrook threw over twice as many INT's as Stanley and had a great running attack. No, Hornibrook is not as good as Stanley. ;)
Hornibrook 141-225 2,006 yrds. 62.7%, 18TD's, 13 INT's 152.4 rating.
Stanley 188-336 2,333 yrds. 56.0%, 25TD's, 6 INT's 134.7 rating.

Stanley vs. Hornibrook is an interesting comparison. I don’t think there is a right answer at this point in time. Stanley has 4 more TDs and 4 less turnovers. Hornibrook has a higher completion percentage, Y/A, and passer rating. Both are non-factors on the ground. It’ll be interesting to see how they develop next year. It could be what decides the division.

We clean a few things up and boom, 8-4.

Stanley just needs to be allowed to audible into a play that isn't a run play.
