Figured I would start this early, maybe even get a reply or two. Here is what we know....

1. Purdue HAS to sweep Iowa to get in the tournament over them
2. Purdue is 2-8 in 1 run games in conference
3. Iowa is really missing Mathews and a healthy Tyler Peyton on the pitching mound

I personally think this series goes 2-1 either way, I don't know who will win it. I don't seem Iowa or Purdue sweeping one another. Now with that being said, Purdue will have revenge on their mind as Iowa swept them last year and two years ago Iowa took 2/3 from Purdue's best team in school history.

I am praying for at least one Hawkeye win, but I am an Iowa fan after all so getting swept wouldn't surprise me as it seems to be Iowa's type of luck in well all sports.

Go Hawkeyes! Win one and you go to Omaha!

Iowa has had Purdue's number the past four years. I think the Hawks take at least two of three with Hickman stepping up again like he did in his last start.

This series makes me awfully nervous with our pitching injuries. Hickman has thrown well as of late, but this is the first time he is going to bounce back from a long outing on a short week.

I will say this, I can't imagine a worse weekend offensively than what we saw against Illinois (knock on wood). At this point, just get Iowa one win and then anything else is a bonus. We live to fight another week and who knows what would happen.

Runners left on base and poor two out hitting has doomed this team in nearly every loss this season. Hopefully they can shake it off this weekend and carry it into the B1G Tournament.

heller's career as a coach is snake bitten with pitching injuries. poor guy has had so many seasons like this one with pitchers

I too do not see a sweep either. wish it were a home series though. ..

On a related note, Twitter says junior Jacob Sharp is leaving baseball at the conclusion of the season. Another Dahm recruit bites the dust.

not familiar witb him. is this a good thing scholarship wise?

sometimes things like this are a blessing. opens up a spot for someone better.

with these RIDICULOUS roster limitations, every slot counts big time

He transferred from Black Hawk this past fall and hadn't seen any action. I'm not sure if he was on scholarship but it opens another spot and enables Heller to bring in another kid this fall.

Isn't Sharp one of the guys that was hurt before the season even started? He had solid JuCo numbers for what it's worth.
You could be right, I can't remember. From Twitter it seems he's leaving baseball all together, leading me to believe it's due to health issues.

hopefully he was getting a nice chunk of scholarship $ and Rick now has something to work with.

OTOH, Rick could have known this was coming and already spent it..

Sounds like the way my wife works with her bonus checks....

Iowa baseball beats Purdue 10-3 tonight! This locks up a B1G Tournament birth for Iowa. Iowa had to use three pitchers tonight as Blake Hickman didn't have his best stuff and only lasted two innings along with facing two batters in the 3rd. He was somewhat wild as he allowed 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and hit one batter. Nick Hibbing came in and threw 3 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and had 1 K. The player of the game IMO is Jared Mandel who came in and had a great outing for Iowa. Mandel went the final 3 2/3 innings allowing 4 hits, no runs, and getting 6 K's. Mandel did walk one. Mandel has really improved as this year has went on and has been a nice surprise with all the injuries. Iowa did get some huge double play balls early in the game when Purdue could've had some big innings.

On offense for Iowa Yacinich, Potempa, Zeutenhorst, and Frankos all had doubles. Eric Toole was 3-4 with an RBI, Tyler Peyton was 3-5 with 2 RBIs, Jake Yacinich was 2-5 with 2 RBIs, Dan Potempa was 1-5 but did have 2 RBIs.

Iowa is now 28-20 on the year and can finish anywhere from 8th-6th in the B1G. Iowa will play at 9am, 1pm, or 5pm on Wednesday in the B1G tournament. Still a lot to be sorted out in this, but they will be in Omaha on Wednesday and Thursday for two games for sure. More if they can win!

Iowa faces Purdue at 5:30 on Friday and 1pm on Saturday.

Minnesota @ indiana in extras. Minnesota noe up 2-1 with 1 out.

IU witb R on 2nd and nobody out and they dont bunt. line out. 2 outs

someone want to post the standings along with who is playing who tonight?

all games should be in the books for the night. seeding got interesting

Nebraska beat Illinois 2-1
Iowa beat Purdue 10-3
Northwestern beat Ohio State 6-3
Minnesota beat Indiana 2-1

PSU/MSU was postponed and will be part of a DH on Friday.

Michigan is done with B1G play and plays two games vs Kansas on Sat/Sun.

I don't have the up to date standings currently. Also, any idea on who has the tiebreaker in the 7/8 spots between Iowa and MSU?

Iowa and MSU didn't play one another this year, so in that instance the tie breakers can get kind of hairy. I am not sure if overall record is after that or if its overall record vs teams that made the B1G tournament.

watched the highlights from twitter/youtube.

the difference in swings between last year and this year is noticeable.

before they were pinball flippers. now they look like hitters. they take healthy cuts.

Standings (thru 5/15)
1. Indiana (36-13, 19-3)
2. Nebraska (36-17, 17-5)
3. Illinois (30-18, 16-6)
4. Minnesota (27-20, 13-9)
5. Michigan (27-26-1, 13-11)
6. Iowa (28-20, 9-13)
6. Ohio State (29-25, 9-13)
8. Michigan State (26-24, 8-13)
9. Northwestern (18-32, 6-15)
10. Penn State (18-29, 5-15)
11. Purdue (12-36, 5-17)

Indiana has clinched at least a share of the Big Ten regular season championship and will win it outright with one more victory.

The eight teams for the Big Ten tournament are set, just the seeding remains up in the air.

As far as tiebreakers go, since Iowa and MSU never played (if they haven't changed the tie break rules from last year), the first tiebreak would be the team with the best winning percentage against all teams ending the season (tied or not) in positions 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 in the final conference standings will receive the higher seed.

If teams are still tied after that, seeding will be determined by best winning percentage against common Big Ten opponents. If still tied, then the team that allowed the fewest number of runs in conference games (in an equal number of games) will receive the higher seed.

If teams are still tied after this step, then the commissioner will flip a coin.

Interesting to look at the teams ahead of us. Won series with Nebraska and Minnesota 2-1. Lost series 2-1 to Michigan. Got swept by Indiana and Illinois.

Need to build some momentum off this Purdue series OFFENSIVELY before heading off to Omaha. With our pitching issues (injuries, inconsistency, lack of depth, etc.), our offense is really going to have to turn it up a notch or four and come ready to score some runs in order to give us a chance of making any noise in the BTT.

If the offense that put up 17 on OSU, 10 on PU, 13 on Northwestern (even though it was a loss), 12 on Kansas, 11 on Minnesota, and so on....shows up, then we have a shot at doing some damage.

If the offense that put up 1, 1, and 2 against Illinois shows up....we'll be 2-and-headin' east on I-80.

I think offensively you will see better than what you saw against Illinois (everything that could go wrong did), but I highly doubt you will see Iowa score 17 and 13 runs too (never know I guess).

Game is rained out today, they will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11am. It's really unfortunate because it means we have to play two games on Saturday then turn around on Wednesday for the B1G tournament. Sasha Kuebel I imagine will throw on Saturday and that gives him one less day of rest as he should be the probable starter on Thursday in the B1G tournament.

Standings after Friday's games:

1. Indiana (37-13, 20-3)
2t. Illinois (31-18, 17-6)
2t. Nebraska (36-18, 17-6)
4. Minnesota (27-21, 13-10)
5. Michigan (27-26-1, 13-11)
6. Michigan State (28-24, 10-13)
7. Iowa (28-20, 9-13)
8. Ohio State (29-26, 9-14)
9. Northwestern (19-32, 7-15)
10t. Penn State (18-31, 5-17)
10t. Purdue (12-36, 5-17)

Iowa loses to Purdue in game two by the score of 6-4. Iowa wasn't very sharp as Sasha Kuebel got off to a rough start allowing 4 hits, 1 hit batter, and 3 runs in the 1st. Kuebel then threw four scoreless innings and was pulled out after 5 and 65 pitches, which leads me to believe he was on a very short pitch count.

Calvin Mathews threw in relief and threw 1 2/3, he got the first two outs of the 7th and then was pulled after back to back walks. Tyler Radtke came in and wasn't very sharp either as he only threw 2/3 of an inning and allowed 3 hits, 1 walk, and 1 run. It is worth nothing that a costly error in the 7th allowed Purdue to stay alive and have a two run 7th. The runs in the 7th were unearned.

Matt Allen threw the final 2/3 allowing one hit.

Iowa scored 2 runs in the 3rd, 1 in the 5th, and 1 in the 9th. Jake Mangler was 2-5 with 2 RBIs, Eric Toole was 2-5 with 1 RBI.

Iowa is 28-21, 9-14 in the B1G and the final regular season game is coming up later this afternoon.

The way I have it figured right now....

OSU beats NW to go 10-14 in the B1G, so Iowa cannot be the 6 seed now.

MSU is leading PSU 7-6 in the 8th, if that score holds then Iowa is guaranteed to be the 8 seed win or lose. If MSU loses and Iowa wins then Iowa is the 7th.

MSU loss/Iowa win = OSU - 6, Iowa - 7, MSU - 8
MSU win/Iowa win = MSU - 6 OSU - 7, Iowa - 8
MSU loss/Iowa loss = OSU - 6, MSU -7, - Iowa 8

As the 8 Iowa would face Indiana at 5pm on Wednesday, if Iowa does get the 7 seed they will play at 1pm on Wednesday vs Illinois/Nebby.

Iowa did win the final game of the series 17-5 over Purdue and had 21 hits on the game. The game included a 7 run 1st inning for Iowa, where they recorded two outs right away before tallying off the 7 runs.

Tyler Peyton threw 5 innings for Iowa allowing 11 hits, 5 runs (4 earned). Andrew Hedrick threw the last four innings and allowed just two hits.

Iowa finishes 29-21 (10-14) on the regular season and will face Indiana at approximately 5pm CST on Wednesday.
