Wife and I have our tickets, hotel and flights. Staying in Manhattan. Coming in Thursday and staying till Monday. Taking the train to Jersey for the game on Saturday. Appears to be very easy. Who else is going?

===================

Most vacations I usually try to learn about the history of where I am going. Since I've never been to NYC, this is just fascinating to me.

Currently watching this documentary from the history channel. Thought I would share. It is fantastic

I watched this one the other night on the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. Fascinating as well.

Flying in Thursday and home Sunday. I'm hoping to take the train to NYC Friday.

Are you staying in New Jersey?
Won't be going to the game, but check out the Element Hotel in Harrison. New hotel, reasonably priced, and right across the street from the PATH train. Easy hop to the city. I'll be there for a New England cruise the week after the game. Just couldn't work out the timing to do both.

Thanks. We were extremely lucky and found a place in mid town east for 99/night through price line at the double tree Hilton. Can't believe the luck on that.

3 of us flying into Newark on Thu morning. Going to Atlantic City Thu and Philly on Fri. Game on Sat and NYC Sun and Mon. Pretty stoked!

4 from Iowa, 2 from California Thursday-Sunday staying @ the Hilton Newark Penn Station.

Wife and I staying at the Sheraton midtown-time square Thursday-Sunday.Going with Winebrenner Red Carpet.

Stayed on Tmes Square about 6 years ago for 2 weeks while working. Tons of stuff to do but for me too many people, stinks, garbage everywhere. My wife flew out for 4 days and we did all the tourist stuff. I don't like crowds at all so the city didn't very little for me. 911 area was humbling.

I went in the summer so this is not anything you will want to do in October but to me the best part of the trip was Harlem';s Rucker Park. Saw some pretty entertaining basketball. A bell hop told me it's a horrible idea to go to that area other than prime daylight hours during the summer when all the games are going on and tourists fill the area. Otherwise you are just asking for trouble.

The other thing I kind of enjoyed was one morning I walked down to Spark's Steakhouse where John Gotti had Paul Costellano assasinated.

I had lots of really good food while there although for my money I didn't think the pizza was anything special. I had original Ray's and Famous Original Ray's and it tasted like almost any other thin sliced pizza I've had.

Good luck, but I know I'll never be back.

4 of us staying in the financial district from Friday-Monday. Flights on Spirit are dirt cheap out of Chicago.

Whats your experience with Spirit. I had a buddy last week that flew into Vegas and he was pissed. Said they charged him 42 bucks each way for a checked bag and 45 bucks each way for a carry on bag and then changed him 18 bucks each way because he wanted an aisle seat. Then he said the plane was late because they couldn't find a pilot. He said by the time they were done nickel and diming him it cost more than to fly United. I always see they are way cheaper but have never done it. After his review I was sure I never wold.

4 coming from Des Moines. Bring your wallet!
I felt like I made out pretty well. Under $350 flight per person. $75 tickets. $500 for 4 nights in double tree Hilton mid town east.

It sounds like if you are trying to be frugal you can eat pretty inexpensively in New York City and a 7-Day unlimited subway pass is $31.

My one and only experience was just okay, but that's the deal with Spirit. No frills airline who nickel and dime the customer on everything. You only get a "personal item" to bring onto the plane, carry-on or checked luggage costs extra. Picking your seat costs extra. No food. You are basically paying for them to pick you up and drop you off.

For us sitting together is ideal, but we can manage being apart for a two-hour flight. My wife and I "purchased" a checked bag for $30/each way. All-in-all we are paying $125/person (including the checked bag) for a roundtrip direct flight from Chicago to NYC. When the price is that low, I find it hard to complain too much. But if you didn't realize any of that I can see how it would be annoying.

Wow. That is a fantastic price.

I will fly Allegiant Air out of Des Moines once in awhile because it's so inexpensive. Knowing that if you want anything more than a ride it's going to cost you more. Understandable. Unfortunately we've seen Allegiant Air having some real problems with mechanical issues and delays and they are almost impossible to get any kind of customer service out of if you do have an issue.

I am also going with winebrenner red carpet travel agency
What kind of deal did they give you?

I see Hawkeye Nation is running their own deal and raking it in. . like $1,900 per person for double occupancy. That's ridiculous

Man.. you people are slacking, all these references to wives and no pic requests?!? Cmon man

Dang. Still alot. Where did they put you up and where are your seats?

I did it for just 2 of us for $1,400 total. Includes tickets on the 40. [$750 flights, $150 tickets $500 hotel] That's Thursday to Monday all in Manhattan.

Doesn't include transportation from NYC to Rutgers but that's a cheap and easy train ride.

I am going +6 We will drive down Saturday morning leaving from lower manhattan.

If anyone is still looking for places to stay - particularly away from midtown and times square which I would always recommend, you should spend a little time on airbnb. There are tons of options and you will always do better on price. Almost any apt you find in the city will have numerous food and bar options with in a block or two from where you stay.

Do they serve alcohol at the game? If so terrehawk is buying with all the money he's saving booking it on his own.LOL

Is anyone doing the NYC I-club pregame tailgate deal? We considered it, but decided against it. For one, it seemed a little overpriced in my opinion. We also think it might be a little more fun to bar hop and mingle with the locals.

I'm drinking it all on the train ride in!.. they call it "railgaiting" I guess. You can have a pull off of mine.

I did get extremely lucky on the hotel though. I still can't believe it

There is some fantastic history to experience around campus (birthplace of college football) and it sounds like they're tailgating is a ton of fun. I think between the train ride in with all of the hawk fans (you can drink on the trains so long as you're not stupid about it),and the walk from the train station and around the tailgating areas I just feel like we're going to have a ton of things to do without blowing a bunch of money on an over priced I club event

Yes we are doing the NYC I-Club tailgater. It looks like fun and it was somewhat reasonable. We usually do our own tailgate but this time were gonna let them do it. The menu looks pretty good and the beer will be cold.

Bump.

Hoping Iowa comes out in droves for this game.

Haven't heard anything official but I would hope everybody plans on wearing gold

I will be staying in Philly and flying into town on Thursday. Anyone know if the train is the best option to get to the game on Saturday? Also, does anyone know when the game time will be announced? I am guessing a 12est/11cst kickoff....

I can't speak for coming in from Philadelphia but certainly coming in from New York City the easiest way is the train. There's a train station likemail less than half a mile from the stadium which would be an easy walk

I've flown Spirit 4 times in the past couple years from O'hare to DFW to see parents for a weekend but only if I'm going alone. Fit what I need in a backpack and good to go. I wouldn't fly the family on it. Would be little savings after all the fees. Nickel and diming is their thing. Have seen many people get upset after they realize all the 'extra' fees. Everything is on the site regarding the extra costs so just read the fine print, do the math. They charge for everything except using the bathroom, for now anyway. Printing your boarding passes at the airport, drinks/snacks on the plane, etc. There's a fee.

I had a buddy that flew to Vegas on Spirit and he said it would have been cheaper to fly United like me. He paid 90 some dollars one way for a carryon and a checked bag. Then had to pay to select an aisle or window. When they were done nickel and diming him it cost more than what I paid. And like SoFla-Hawkeye the departure time wasn't even close. What was better he texted me when we were flying out of Vegas that they were still in Vegas because they couldn't find a pilot. That had me rolling.

I will be going as well, flying in to Baltimore on Thursday. Have a good friend of mine who is a Rutgers Alum who lives in Maryland, will be staying there for a couple nights so I don't have to worry about lodging so that will be nice. But i can't wait for the game, this will be the only true Iowa away game i have ever been too. I don't really consider ISU to be an away game since it's in Iowa.
