Iowa school board member gets ripped for saying public education is 'not to teach kids what parents want’

The school board member's Facebook post drew much ire, prompting calls for her resignation

An Iowa school board member posted on Facebook on Tuesday that public education is not to teach kids what parents want, but rather what the community needs.

"The purpose of a public ed is to not teach kids what the parents want. It is to teach them what society needs them to know. The client is not the parent, but the community," Linn-Mar school board member Rachel Wall posted.

The school board member is, of course, absolutely correct as anyone with a minimum of one functional brain cell would understand.

I opened the thread only to find how distorted the subject matter was of what Fox told Northern to be fauxraged about today.
It is always worth reminding people that they are always free to attend school board meetings, visit with your kid’s teachers, and even directly assist in the education of your children.

Came here to post this. Educators know more than parents, sorry MAGA snowflakes.
The fundamental question is...which parent gets to decide what gets taught? Do those idiots complaining think THEY all agree? Black parents would like some American history taught from a black perspective. Do those morans think that's ok?

This country is f'n doomed. They're literally making "intellectual" an epithet.

Bad optics, but she is right.

I have long believed that the purpose of education is maybe 1/3 what they learn and 2/3 how they learn it. Teaching students to THINK is critical is today's ever-changing world.

If teachers are teaching something the parents disagree with, the dinner table is an excellent time to discuss it. Anyone remember the dinner table?

No child's brain is going to melt if they learn about African American history or gender identity.

Citizens need to start paying serious attention to school board elections. The inherently low voter turnout provides a huge opportunity for teachers unions and their family and friends to dominate these elections. Sometimes leaving us with agenda driven school boards determining what the community needs.

People need to wake up and participate in the voting process.

And why is this controversial? If I had wanted my kid to learn meditation as a core life skill, the school board should absolutely tell me to take a hike.

This sudden demonization of educators and insistence that parents run the show is a bad, bad deal. Parent involvement is a good thing, but that shouldn’t start with petitioning the school board.

Frankly it’s sort of terrifying. I know some people who think the schools shouldn’t even teach Trig or calculus because you never need that…which while may be true…is not going to help our nation in the STEM war with China.

The good news, if this outrages you, is there is accountability at this public school in the form of school board meetings and elections for the tax paying citizens. Unfortunately that won't be the case for the private schools that receive the taxpayer money.

Parents mean well, most of the time. However, many parents don’t have a phuquin’ clue! The road to hell is pied with good intentions. The same can be said regarding parenting. Kids are better off learning their civics in school than they are from their parents for the most part.
Parents need to be concerned their kids learned HOW to think in school, as opposed to a regurgitation of what they hear at home.

Is that why the educational system has been continually getting worse and the product (
How sad has FoxNews become that they are combing Facebook in Marion for news stories?
It’s so weird that MSNBC poster making fun of FoxNews poster when they are essentially the same thing.

If you truly feel parents with extreme views know more than trained educators, then I don't know what to tell you. Home schooling is always an option.

And educators know what society needs? Parents aren't the client? The arrogance of her comment is exactly why parents are pushing back on schools. Condescending nonsense from a school board member

Amazing and hilarious the comments above saying trained educators know more than parents. The parents that are working outside of Education in society being told by people that haven't ever been anything other than teachers what is needed in society. Because parents aren't in society and don't care more about what their own children need vs a person doing a job. Guess what parents in wealthy school districts do? They are very involved in the schools.

This lady is done as a school board member. The parents will guarantee that. Especially in the Linn Mar district

Answer the question that was posed before then. Which parent(s) get to decide what is taught?

Fact is parents aren't educators, or doctors or dentists or.... it's why we send our kids to specialists. Except some think they know as much as these trained professionals and **** things up for their kids and, often, others as well.

I enjoy reading the left's spin on this. Do you really believe parents would object if the schools were ONLY teaching math, English, science, ect.? CRT (or call it what you will) gender bs white privledge, political bias, etc. Sick with the basics and the public schools would be golden.

Another interesting straw man take.

Remember when the repubs were screaming about indoctrination from teachers, but then every decision they've made since has been to assure indoctornation for students? Good times.
Never ending hypocrisy, and we know what this new Republican party wants America to look like. They are so terrified of non-Christian, diverse teaching and thinking.

Hey look, another thread posted by Northern where every non-numpty on the board unites to tell him how wrong he is. LOL.

You guys still think my masochism theory re: that poster is far-fetched?

You first said "Hey look, another thread posted by Northern where literally everyone unites to tell him how wrong he is. LOL."

Then you changed it because you were wrong. Several posters are not in your camp on this, including me.

Which school teacher should decide that without oversight? All these other professions teacher like to glom onto as a comparison have much stricter oversight and absolutely answer to their patients. None of those other professionals by the eay are protected from being individually sued like teachers are either.

Last time I checked, my tax dollars didn't go to individual doctors or dentists and the state wasn't forcing me to send my children to them either.

Yes, I had to edit it to account for the small amount of numpties who parachuted into the thread late with their drivel. You are welcome.

The last thing I want is for other idiot parents to decide what my kid learns. This goes for both the woke, anti-woke and everything in between.

WTF are you blabbering about? Teachers don't decide things without oversight.

Try writing a coherent sentence or two. JFC

Say you have 50 kids comprising a school’s 4th grade class. That’s 50 different upbringings and if you ask each parent what they want their kid to learn, you’ll get 50 different answers. Extrapolate that many times over for big schools.

That’s why you leave it to professionals to sort through the noise and attempt to meet the basic learning needs of each kid. Emphasis on the word “attempt.”

I agree with your point with one exception. You'll get 1 or 2 different answers from Karen and Kevin wanting to dictate what is taught and the rest will gladly leave it to the professionals to decide what is appropriate.
