Officials say surgery is expected for a southeastern Iowa sheriff who accidentally shot himself in the left hand while cleaning a gun.

A news release from the Des Moines County Sheriff's Office says Sheriff Mike Johnstone was cleaning his personally owned handgun at his home when it fired at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Johnstone was taken to the Great River Medical Center's emergency room for treatment. His injury is not considered to be life-threatening.

The department's release says the hospital has made arrangements to have Johnstone transferred to another medical facility where he could be treated by a surgeon who specializes in hand injuries.

If a law enforcement officer is dumb enough to shoot themselves while cleaning their pistol, they should immediately be dismissed and be barred from ever working in law enforcement again. It ain't rocket science...drop the magazine, lock the slide to the rear and look into the chamber from the ejection port. It's called clearing the weapon.

I always get it backwards. It isn't discharge first, remove round, and remove magazine is it?
From the police manual, you listen for call reporting suspicious behavior. Find house with unlocked door nearby. Shoot dog three times, shoot homeowner five times, fire at partner with remaining rounds. Clean gun during two week paid vacation.
