Iowa softball

Only two hits verses Texas State is concerning. A lead-off double and we could not score. That sets the tone for the game.

There is a pitcher from Iowa on my daughters travel that's committed to Northwestern already. Her name is Mckenzie Ellis, great kid and fantastic family.

I will say that Iowa does not produce the amount of high-caliber softball players that other parts of the country do, but there are always gems that show up rather often. If only the Hawkeye coach would see this. I'm not saying she should jump on every Iowa native that shows interest, but rather just don't miss out on the Iowa-raised girls who can do some damage in D1 athletics.
Paige is a relative of mine. She verbally committed to Missouri as a junior.

Iowa girls can play softball. Period.

Missed a golden chance to sweep the Illini but will take a series win to begin conference play. The bats awoke and scored some much needed runs during the series. Hopefully this relaxes the girls and they continue to hit well. The pitching is struggling right now and that surprises me.

Hawks,

I seriously doubt that is correct because she's constantly tweeting about MU and not being able to wait till she's there. I talked other dad for over an hour about a month ago and I have to say he's a great guy. Plus you add in the fact that she's already signed her LOI and I highly doubt MU is going to run from a girl with her ability.

Nice to see Blank and Massey hit well. They struggled early. With a couple more hits from them we may have picked up another win or two in the pre-conference season.

There's talk of moving the Wisc series to Iowa again this year. Would be nice to take the series from them but we've struggled against Darrah in the past.

Linus,

I was replying to another post that has since been deleted.

If we can get blank and Massey back on track offensively it will bode very well going forward

Great 4-1 win today to take the series against the Badgers. Looks like the team is coming together and Blank hit her first HR of the year. Hawks are 4-2 in Big 10 play. Excellent start. Way to go ladies

Great to see Blank and Massey hitting well. We have a very tough few weeks.....NW, MN, Neb and Mizzou.

Would be nice to win a couple of those series.

Linus,

Very pivotal point in the season coming up. If we can come out that gauntlet with a winning record against those team I firmly believe we will make the tournament this year. I really like the way the team has settled down and is really starting to battle. My daughter had a great conversation with Coach Looper last and we are going to be in Iowa City for the Michigan State series. I would love to meet some of you Iowa softball diehards.

How many scholarships does D1 softball get? I thought it was like 15?

I see that the Hawks have 16 girls on the roster....

Baseball gets like 11.7 and easily need a 24-25 man roster. Plus the NCAA limited the # of players they can even have in the program to 35. (I think)

How is that fair?

Softball gets 12.

How is that fair? Fair has nothing to do with it. It's about cost and compliance with Title IX legislation.

Crankermo,

We're 9-15. Gave away opportunities to beat UAB, S Carolina and Mizzou. Get those wins over top 25 RPI teams we're at 12-12 and set up nicely to make a run to get into the tournament. Now, a little more work to do, but the last 12 games are winnable so we need to put hold serve on these tough games and make a run at the end.

We live in the DFW area but will be at the Fri/Sat games of the MSU series (back in Iowa City with family). My partner is gohawks on Ultimate College Softball. Think you've chatted with him before on that site. Hope to meet you if you're there.

Linus,

What a small world. I have talked with gohawks quit bit. We will definitely plan on being there for the Friday & Saturday games and heading back home Saturday to get ready for Easter Sunday. My family would love to meet you and any other fans.

Drake beats Iowa tonight 5-3. At this point it looks like the ladies will have to win the B1G tournament to get into the NCAA Tournament.

fair? yes, title IX is not fair. it is disgraceful.

actually it is disgusting.

so softball has only 16 players and 12 are on full rides.

yet baseball is limited to 35 players in the program and limited far less than that on how many can be on the active roster but gets 11.7 TOTAL scholarships to spread out.

no baseball player gets a full scholarship yet nearly every SB player does.

I know for a fact that most baseball programs have to cut players from just being in the program. kids that just want to the opportunity to practice, with the hope to make the team yet they no longer are allowed due to the idiotic title IX.

disgraceful

Chet,

You are grossly misinformed when you state that nearly every softball player gets a full ride. In actuality most softball scholarships are in the 30-40% range with the exception of a stud pitcher. Just for comparisons sake my daughter had an offer of 40% from Oregon which is very good from a power program. The issue isn't title IX, the issue is the non revenue sports are not valued like they need to be. Softball is generating tremendous exposure for Universities now. The college baseball boom has come and gone and IMO the ADs didn't take advantage of it when they could've. I think they've realized their mistake and are being careful to not let it happen again. Softballs presence on TV is HUGE nowadays and is great advertisement for the university.

With all that being said I do wish there was equality with all the sports. Football and basketball coaches don't have to deal with that because all their scholarships are full rides. Specifically with softball that's why academics are so vital to the programs. If athletes can get academic money is helps lessen the burden on the athletic money.

so how many sb players are allowed in a d1 program?

they have 12 scholarships to use. iowa has 16 players on their roster.

the issue for baseball IS title IX.

sure, there are lots of programs that arent self supporting but there are a large number that are.

yet those programs and players suffer due to title IX bullcrap.

that is a fact.

lots of programs were shuttered JUST because of title IX.

when you limit the number of guys that can even participate in the program that is an issue.

having 35 or 50 in the program isnt an expense issue. its a title IX issue.

Chet,

You can have as many players as you want. My daughter was also offered by Arkansas and they told us they keep at least 26 kids on the roster at all times. Roster size is whatever the coach wants to deal with. Coaches will divide up the scholarships as they see fit, it's up to them to maximize the money.

Whether people want to recognize it or not softball at this present time is one of the key components to a successful AD because of the exposure it's getting. I can remember growing up and eagerly awaiting college baseball to be on TV. Back in the Pete Incaviglia days. It was awesome to watch. College baseball had a TV rebirth back in the 90's with LSU hitting bombs also but unfortunately it's falling to the wayside as viable TV product other than the CWS right now. Hopefully it will come back.

I have 2 daughters and a son who travels with his baseball team. He will make his way one way or another just like his sister has. I wish all sports had equal footing with the revenue generating sports but it's also up to those non revenue sports to capitalize on it when the opportunity presents itself.

From what I've read Iowa baseball seems to have gotten a pretty damn good coach so let's all hope he get's its turned around and they can reap the benefits.

thanks. thats all good to know. college baseball has a limitation of 35 players allowed now.

before title IX there wasnt one

I was involved in a program that had tryouts in the fall and 100 kids tried out and occasionally we got a couple decent players. we usually had 45-50 that would be allowed to stay in the program. not anymore.

I also witnessed the sb program hold tryouts just to get to 15 players.

we did fundraising for yrs to pay for lights and turf for baseball. when title IX came in, sb was given the same things out of the budget which hurt all of the programs financially.

im glad to see sb getting some interest. its just a shame that the ncaa did it on the backs of baseball (and others)

Chet,

I do agree that it's a shame what happened to other non revenue sports because of limited funds. Wrestling has probably taken the biggest hit nation wide except at Iowa of course. I'm guessing it's a self sustaining program with the legacy it's created. The biggest thing softball has going for it is all the bigtime recruits will play in college and not the pros. The MLB and NBA draft has really hurt those respective sports in my opinion

I think there is a limit to the number of girls who can travel. 20 is the max. Roster size can exceed and more than 20 can be suited up for home games.

We had 24 at one point on the roster last year but a few dropped for various reasons.

Cranker,

I've always been curious does roster size impact a recruits decision as to which school to attend? Some schools (like Arkansas) carry big rosters others do not. Did that impact your daughter's decision?

I'll be honest, it was definitely something we talked about. When we decided to start taking visits we had a talk about what our daughter wanted out of a school and it's softball program. Her first priority was education obviously and she wanted to play close to home where family and friends could watch. She also wants to play in the WCWS but she wants to be part of rebuilding a program and not just being another player. She desperately wants Iowa to regain its place among the elite programs.

The biggest thing about my daughter decision to play at Iowa was she flat out fell in love with the coaching staff, the university and Iowa city. They could've told her they were keeping 26 kids and it would not of mattered. She knew from the day she set foot there that it was where she wanted to be. We had several more visits lined up to some bigtime schools but when we got back home she wanted to commit so she had to talk to her travel ball coach and explain to him her reasons for wanting to commit. After talking to him she called Coach Looper on the way home and told her she was going to be a Hawkeye.

Shut out twice in a doubleheader loss to Minnesota -- can't hit with runners on base.
Posted from wireless.rivals.com[/URL]

Burbank,

You hit the nail on the head. We just can't find that timely hit. We hit several balls hard when needed just right at someone. Minnesota has a good team but they also got some really lucky bounces that went there way. When you are going good that happens.

It's been that way all year. We've consistently hit with or out hit our opponents but can not get the hits with runners on. The first game it flet like we were hitting the ball pretty hard but at people while MN got some non hard hit balls to find holes.

We need a series win this weekend and spit with Mizzou. The rest of the schedule sets up pretty nice.

Iowa loses 5-2 to Nebraska, Iowa was up 1-0 pretty much all game. They give up 2 unearned runs in the 6th, get a run back in the 7th to tie it 2-2 and then give up a 2 out walk-off 3-run HR to lose 5-2.

They are playing game two now

This is the worst Iowa team since Blevins took over for the '88 season. Believe me it isn't going to get better.... this year or next.

Ya, you saw today in Lincoln how far we are away from anything that comes close to resembling a B1G Championship. Thank goodness we have Indiana and Michigan State on the schedule instead of Purdue and Michigan. A 30+ lose season is pretty much guaranteed.

Sure am glad Barta gave Looper that contract extension.

Next year will be worse without Massey
