Iowa State

They were rolling then Arizona half court shot to send to OT happened and they lost. With that loss finished rest of year 8-8. When healthy their 8 man rotation was great. But Achilles heel was health. Momcilivic missed games with wrist. Jones & Lipsey banged up. But Gilbert injury killed them. One guy could get to basket when he wanted late in shot clock. I remember watching big Monday blowout at KU. Fran fraschilla said with their depth his concern is that 2nd game be first or 2nd weekend with 48 hrs or less between games could cause problems and proved true today.

Have heard this Rumor in clone land from 2 people that are fans and both said Gilbert became a distraction late in the year with his injury. both insinuated he could’ve potentially play this weekend and asked for more NIL $. That’s why he didn’t even travel to Cleveland which is one thing where I think maybe there could be more because he traveled to other games including big 12 tourney and was on the bench in street clothes. Figured if true hear more by now but maybe now season is over if any truth whatsoever or anything going on more than injury with him may hear as time goes on.
Cleveland?

I remember back in late fall when the Des Moines media was slobbering all over the fact Iowa State’s football, men’s bball and women’s bball teams were all in the AP Top 10 at the same time. Kept thinking, it’s not where you start, it’s where you end up. Men’s bball will somehow probably end up finishing in the top 25, though they don’t deserve it. And I think the football team ended up in the top 25 thanks to Cam Ward sitting out the second half of their bowl game.

Yes it is where you end up in NCAA tourney. The Garza-Weezy-Murray-JBO team that lost to Oregon was Top8 at one point in the season. After the beat down by Oregon in NCAA, they didn't even make the Sweet16. I think they got a Top 20 rating in final poll, but the really finished somewhere in the 17-32 range given they lost in round of 32.

ISU fans can kid themselves if they want, what a letdown. Unless they get an NIL boost from their billionaire, they're in trouble because everyone is now playing the NIL game.

Sorry but being objective, it was an enormous failure of a season.

You did barely win your Super Bowl game though.

So maybe beating a bad Iowa does make it a successful season to ISU fans.

Drake would’ve taken you to the woodshed btw.

You think spending almost the entire season in the top 10, getting a 3 seed, 25 wins, despite all of the challenges is a failure… well we’ll agree to disagree.

it was pretty simple it was injuries. Gilbert stated last week the pulled groin was injured the 1st conference game of the season. He was never the same, and Lipsey played hurt at the end. You didn't see the defensive intensity they had hawking the ball when Gilbert and Lipsey were healthy. Offensively, Gilbert tried to play through it but never had the same push going to the hoop. They should have sat him a month or 6 weeks at the start to get healthy again.

In that case, hang the banner.

They will. There will be a little notation on the 2nd round banner in Hilton. It won't say the whole story, but there it is.

For the record, I don't know everything about Gilbert. I'm not going to pretend so I won't get into arguments about what people have heard. I'll tell you what I know for a fact about him:

1. Gilbert, Lipsey, and Jones all sat down with the coaches at the end of last year, and the coaches asked them to take less money this year so they could go get Jefferson and Jackson. They did so the team could be better.

2. He's one of the most competitive people to ever play for ISU, he holds himself to a very high standard, and his teammates to a very high standard. I think the injury really weighed on him due to that.

3. He showed up to one of my son's basketball practices this winter because one of his friends was a coach. He didn't have to be there. He didn't have to stay as long as he did. He was trying to help his friend and his friend's team by giving them a little extra juice.

ISU is a case study on what we don't want to happen with NIL drama. Will McCollum's precise team oriented style kinda auto-eliminate all the entitled "athletes" we don't really want long term, or even short term? Hope so.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

I remember saying in the Cyhawk game thread that Iowa state wasn’t a legit top 10 team. That 3 seed was pretty wild considering they played .500 ball half the year. Csb

Iowa finished 8th in the AP in 2021.
ISU finished 8th last year in the AP.

I thought earlier this season Iowa State was a legit Final 4 team. After an early exit from both this year’s Big 12 and NCAA tournaments, not to mention finishing 5th in the regular season standings, you have to consider this season a failure. So what happened? Overrated? Coaching? Bad team chemistry?
Think they had several injuries for one and still think they are not healthy. First of the year they were really tough than it all went south with injuries.

They always start out gang busters and falter mid season

Cmon. You honestly can’t say being a 3 seed and basically finishing the last half of the year 500 and then being down 30 last night wasn’t a bit of a failure after Hawaii? Multiple people were calling you guys a Final 4 contender. And honestly you looked like one. You guys literally quit playing defense the last month of the season which was supposedly your calling card.

Disappointing end to the season, but really hard to see this season as a failure.

Gilbert was hurt the entire conference season. I'm not sure if Lipsey was ever fully healthy. Milan was hurt. Jones got sick. By my count, only Jefferson + Jackson were the only starters who were available the entire year. Hard to overcome that.

What happened with Gilbert is pure speculation - none of us will ever know. No need to ever go there.

Hawk fans like to rip ISU no matter what. That's fine. It's part of the rivalry. How many schools keep players for 4 years? I'm not sure, but it has to be a really low number. Transfers are the game now. Anyone staying 4 years is a rarity. Guys like Payton Sandfort + Tamin Lipsey are rare.

Congrats on the McCollum hire. I hope it works out for the UI. Basketball in Iowa is better when all schools are solid.

Oh stop. The biggest threads on CF are when Iowa fails at something. Every fanbase does it, but ISU is on a whole other level.

ISU fans like to rip IA no matter what too...the only difference I see is you can come over here and rip us back...we can't do that on your site...you will get banned for even responding. I agree staying 4 years will definitely become a rarity in the current crappy climate.

Message boards don't represent the entire fan base. There are dipshits in every fan base. I'm a Cyclone alum + fan but most of my friends are Hawkeye fans. It's fine that we hurl comments at each other, but there is no need to be a dick about it. Those that do are losers and need to gain some perspective.

It’s clear why no ISU fan wants to “go there” regarding Gilbert. The kid was clearly a cancer if he wasn’t even allowed to travel to the NCAA tournament with the team.

Good on TJ for showing him the door but at the same time that’s what you get when you bring in low character but high talent guys. ISU has a history of that.

Well looks like Iowa isn’t the only one losing lot of players to the portal. 4 from ISU. Starting C Jackson, 8-9th man Watson and red shirt freshman rock and fish.

In 2015, Iowa football team was 12-0 and was one play from winning in the conference title game. Losing like they did to Stanford in the Rose Bowl ruined that season for me.

Finishing the season the way they did, ISU was gifted a 3 seed and got to play in front of a home crowd in the first round. They finished 5th in the league, lost early in the Big 12 tourney and was demolished by a middle of the pack, SEC team. I guess you can sit around and enjoy your thoughts from November and December because they were no more than an average team the last half of the season

Some Iowa fans only really care about BB in March so they would deem the ISU season a failure.
I appreciate BB from nov-march and think otherwise.
ISU had a strong year.
ISU fans had fun with that team.
Tj reminds me of tom thibideau of bulls/Knicks

Thibs believes in all out defensive pressure all 82 games with his starters playing huge minutes.
His teams break down by the end .

I’d venture to say most Iowa fans only care about bball in March. Hawk fans don’t give a shit about bball. Of course all of us on this forum do, but Iowa fans overall are idiots when it comes to talking hoops.

Wow…..1 whole player!

After all the chest-puffing about your beloved clowns……it must really chap your a$$ they CHOKED so bad in the tourney. 😂 🤡
This is the world we live in. You'd best get used to it...Iowa will have a whole new lineup next season and that's just how its going to go. You'll have a couple/few guys carry through and a rotating cast around them of NIL "travelers". I hate it as much as most college fans...but if you DON'T play that game you end up with...a Licklighter/McCaffrey situation.
