Starting pitcher has been named for LSU for Saturday's game; it will be Riley Cooper. Big lefty - 6'2" 270 lbs. Transferred to LSU last year after pitching a year for U of Arizona. Lots of relief appearances in 2022; no games started. Started LSU's second game of the year last Saturday. He threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up no hits, 2 walks, no runs and struck out 7. Based upon last year's numbers, Iowa will likely need to earn runs with the bats. He only walked 8 hitters in 40 IP.

Pre-season interview with Cooper . . . lots of questions relating to him converting from reliever to starter (sounds like he may actually throw an occasional knuckleball):

LSU's #1 pitcher, Paul Skenes (lefty with 12 Ks in 6 IP in season opener) will pitch against KSU on Friday.

Had some words for the ump, hawkeyesports has the radio free for anyone interested.

FWIW, LSU fans were complaining vociferously about the K zone when Cooper was on the mound.

A friend of mine is at the game and texted me that it wasn’t obvious that Brecht was getting squeezed by the ump. Also important to note that his reputation doesn’t help. If a pitcher’s reputation is that he struggles with control (understatement with Brecht), he will not get a lot of borderline calls.

Huge win for the Hawks over #1 LSU.

Bats woke up in a big way after getting shut down yesterday. 16 hits total, 6 batters had at least 2 hits. Dorighi had a huge game -- 3/4 with 2 doubles and a HR. Anthony and Frazier also had HRs.

Brecht went 3.1 and gave up 2 runs on 1 hit. He had 6 Ks, but also had 8 walks. Lots to be excited about there, but also some control issues obviously.

Simpson took over and got the win -- 4.2 IP, 3 hits, 2 ER, 8 Ks. Really nice outing from him.
