Iowa vs Virginia Baseball Game Link

Wow, the bullpen is absolute dogshit right now.

Marcus Morgan got the start today & #18 Iowa (home team) led #14 Virginia 6-0 after 1 inning.

After 3 complete innings, Iowa led 7-2.

Iowa ended up losing 12-9. The bullpen ended up giving up 8 of the 12 runs.

Marcus was pulled in the top of the 4th after giving up a single and a walk and registering 0 outs. Both of these base runners scored.

Marcus' line:
3 innings pitched
17 batters faced
76 pitches (42 strikes, 34 balls)

3 Hits allowed
5 walks
0 Wild pitches
1 Hit batter

4 strike outs

4 earned runs

2.67 WHIP for this game (5 walks + 3 hits / 3 innings pitched). In the Major Leagues, the average WHIP is around 1.30.

7.36 ERA for the season

Thought Iowa would do well against this tough preseason schedule after reading Heller’s comments about how well pitchers looked during live scrimmages. Seems middle relief isn’t as strong as Heller thought.

Middle relief is supposed to be actual middle relief though (7th and 8th inning), not come in and pitch over half the game two out of every three of the starts. If the starters are going to be lucky just to get through five innings every other start the bullpen arms will be dead by April anyway before B10 even starts.

One other interesting stat:

2.67: Marcus' WHIP for yesterday's game (5 walks + 3 hits / 3 innings pitched). He also hit a batter. In the Major Leagues, the average WHIP is half this number (around 1.30).

Also, as noted above, Iowa had a 7-2 lead after 3 innings. Not a good sign that Iowa could not hold on to this lead.

This right here.

And just like that Iowa's baseball season is over and we have to hand-wring about whether we'll make the tournament because the NCAA still idiotically uses RPI to determine their field.

Iowa baseball = BAU

Well I can't make any excuses for the today's bullpen meltdown, Obermueller did very well putting up five zeroes. Probably would've brought in Whitlock to start the 6th if you were going to use him anyway, but they were all terrible so it didn't matter. Beuter probably should only be pitching on Tuesdays at this point or definitely not in any game where Iowa is winning by less than 10.
