Was looking at Iowa Western football roster and found some interesting things:
  • First, didn't realize CJ Beathards bro is there? What? Clay Beathard!
  • Ahead of him is Kai Locksley, a former TX commit who had offers from almost all SEC schools including Bama, wow..
  • In the backfield is T'Boy White, a kid from Iowa I thought was on our radar at some point, maybe a grayshirt/PWO.
  • DL Chester Graves, a one time Ole Miss commit is definitely on Iowa's radar
  • DL Ja'Chi Baker, 6'7 is there too, a one time Wyoming commit who Iowa was looking at
  • OL Tre Johnson, a Miami commit out of high school
  • LB Michael Scott, ISU offer and a bunch of others including P5 and non P5
  • Didn't see former Iowa player Cam Harrell listed, I thought he was going there...
May be others but safe to say this school is loaded with talent!

I grew up in SW Iowa and IWCC had a really respected baseball program. It is quite impressive that they have become a juco power in just 10 years.

My Nebraska fan neighbor insists that Scott Frost will "own" IWCC as long as he is coaching in Lincoln; that IWCC will become a "feeder program" for UNL. Its a done deal, he says, because Frost is tight with IWCC's coach and, in any event, the appeal will be overwhelming because the Huskers will be competing for B10 titles and national championships within a couple of years.....

The hype is off the charts, Hawk fans.

They have Malcom Lee too - a guy who Iowa is recruiting at DE.

Junior college football is expensive so there are no a lot of programs.

Many teams have some players that obviously are just there because of grades.

Iowa Western is loaded all the way.

It’s very similar to Indian hills basketball.
In the 80’s Iowa State use to play JV football against Ellsworth. Iowa State quit doing that in part because Ellsworth was so loaded with talent they were destroying them.

Sorry, I would move.

Your Nebraska fan neighbor is an idiot.

If Frost has to rely entirely on taking more than 2-3 JUCO's every year, he is in trouble. The best he can do is pick off 1-2 guys from there every year.....not exactly a "feeder program". IWCC is very good, but there are always a lot of high level JUCO players in Kansas as well.

So, is Clay Beathard considered as good a prospect as CJ was?
No, never got quite as big as CJ. Clay signed with Tennessee-Martin out of high school, but wanted a change of scenery.

Kansas transfer Tyriek Starks is also at Iowa Western this year, so they have a couple guys fighting for the starting job.

Yeah not to mention Nebbie is trying to build in roads back into that program after having none whatsoever for a long time. As it relates to the Hawks, I'm about zero worried. I would like to see us start to canvas the Kansas JUCO scene a little more though for what it's worth. I feel like we could pick up some higher-end skill position guys from there vs trying to recruit the same level of guy right out of HS which has been tough for us.

I think we can maybe count on one hand the number of Jucos Iowa has taken over the last 15 years. Not sure if that is accurate, it just seems like we don't take them very often.

But history need not = future. And when you see the decommits from other universities who end up there why not see if there are some fits?

As for your count on 1 hand comment, I agreed. Then I took a close look at this roster. Maybe things are changing a bit. ;)

10 Mekhi Sargent RB 5-10 210 So. Key West, FL Iowa Western
23 Dominique Dafney WR 6-2 225 Jr. West Des Moines, IA Iowa Western
47 Nick Anderson LB 6-2 225 Jr. Waukee, IA Iowa Western
54 Daviyon Nixon DL 6-3 306 So. Kenosha, WI Iowa Western
84 Nick Easley WR 5-11 205 Sr. Newton, IA Iowa Western
97 Jack Kallenberger DE 6-5 272 Jr. Bettendorf, IA Iowa Central

I believe Nick Easley is the only one who was offered a schollie? Nixon committed before having to go to Juco. Thought Sargent walked on. Come to think of it, thought we had a Juco wr a few years ago that was really fast, but didn’t see much time.

I mean ones we have offered schollies to, not walk ons

That does make a difference. Here are the Juco's off that the top of my head that came in on scholly. Current=Sargent, Nixon Past 15 year Nathan Chandler, Marshal Yanda, Damon Powell, Bryan Gattas, and Amari Spievey. I'm sure I'm missing some too.

Ask you neighbor...if Frost is such a fantastic recruiter... why does he have to dip into IWCC?

I'm confident that I already know the answer to that question. You have to get into the brain of a diehard Husker fan ….. Frost doesn't need to recruit IWCC. He will simply cherry-pick an All-American JUCO player or two for insurance purposes while their young 4 & 5-star players gain more experience.

#49 Ben Sorenson is a friend of our family. Great kid. Great choice for him to go to IWCC. He’s a hell of an athlete and fast. Played Running Back and Safety in High School. Coach Stroh moved him to Tight End. 6’ 4” and can fly.
