The women's soccer team is in the Big Ten Tournament final after upsetting top seed Penn State 1:0. Iowa had to upset two other teams in the regional just to make it to the four-team tournament.
Good thread. And you hit the nail on the head with your take on the match, Hawkfan. Penn State was the #1 offense in the country, and the only ones besides FSU receiving first place votes. Penn State hadn’t even been held under two goals in a first half all year to anyone but Iowa. The Hawkeyes did it twice and shut out the Nittany Lions for the first time in over a year and a month. First ever away win in Happy Valley (0-13 until today). Dillani had a top 25 recruiting class last year, and they’ve shown up, Huge play from a unanimous All-B1G freshman goalkeeper, and the goal from another freshman. Now time to get that B1G Championship for the first time ever.I know it is "just women's soccer" but we need to create more buzz on this. The women played tremendous in the first half. The game was even and I would argue the Hawks looked better.
Got out with a nice goal in the 2nd and a terrible decision from the ref to issue a red card and make the women play 10 on 11 for a half hour. Defense stepped up and got them to the final.
Penn St. is one of the best offensive teams in the nation and ranked #4 overall and the Hawks shut them out. Being a high school soccer coach in the Iowa City Community School District, this is an awesome story. Can't wait to watch the final!
Go Hawks!
I didn't watch the full game but from what I saw in the first half Iowa controlled the ball effectively. Also, the first yellow card was weak. The Iowa player might have missed the ball on the tackle, but it's not a hard tackle at all, and it happened near the midfield and not a last-gasp attempt to stop an attack.
I would think she had more fouls than just two. A foul in soccer is pretty commonplace. The refs don't even track them unless it's a card.So did she get two yellows on her only two fouls?

Maybe but you can’t score if you don’t shoot.Horrible save.
Great goal! Is it good enough for an ESPN Top 10 highlight?
On slow motion replay, I have to respectfully disagree. The goalkeeper was in perfect position, and she got a touch to it. The pace of the shot is what surprised her, and she reacted too slow to get enough push on it, instead just getting enough a touch to glance it off the underside of the crossbar.I appreciate it but no. That's what we call a "girl goal." The ball is struck well so I don't want to take anything away from that... but female keepers have a tendency to struggle with shots like that at the high school level. The keeper makes an initial read that was correct to drop to her line but she inexplicably stops because she thinks she can high point the ball and fails to get a touch.
Her footwork let her down by not dropping a step or two more. That's something high school keepers struggle with but I guess I wasn't expecting that from a D1 keeper.
The old adage rings true, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I'm very glad that ball went in and the ladies get a shot at the NCAA tournament! Go Hawks!
