Back by popular demand are my objective, non-homer thoughts on today's matchup against Miami of Ohio. Top 10 observations:

1. DL - Wow, Nelsen is going to be a stud! Both Nelsens, for that matter. Typical hard working Iowa boys, but with atypical frames. So tall, great motors, and good instincts. The DL is in good hands for years to come. They will still have some growing pains, and I don't see them being a force against top OLs, but really good start.

2. Special Teams/PK/Punter - Major kudos to the kicking game! Coluzzi is the man...showing a better kickoff leg than even Koehn last year. And how about the true freshmen walkon, Duncan, who is being counted on to be a top 15 team's key playin in close games. His extra points were so crisp and perfect (again, an upgrade vs. Koehn). Punting game was solid as well, with no shanks. WTF are we doing playing our top LB on the punt return team? That's a kamikaze position and we can ill afford to have jewel hurt.

3. CB - I feel bad for King. I'm not sure it was in his best interest to come back to Iowa this year after winning the Thorpe. Teams aren't going to throw at him, his stats are going to go down, and it's possible that teams may not even kick/punt to him this season. He had an amazing return called back by an illegal block. He's a man among boys, and I hope we get the ball in his hands any way we can.

4. CB - Speaking of feeling bad for a CB, Mabin is going to get picked on all year long. He was lit up today, and I don't think the schedule is going to let up on him, as this was one of the easiest WR/QB combos we will play all year.

5. RBs - RBs played great, as can be expected against such a crappy opponent. I remain on team Wadley, though, and am still mystified as to what he needs to do to start. He averaged over 10 yards per carry today, and had 121 yrds. That's not to take away from Daniels' performance, but I think it's clear just as it was all last year that Wadley is a special talent. Speaking of special talent, wtf was going on where Mitchell didn't get to play until AFTER a true freshmen, and only got 2 carries with 1 min to play? Wasn't he at the very least supposed to be our stud 3rd down back? He's obviously not hurt, as he did play in mop up duty.

6. QB - CJ had a serviceable game. While his all-Big 10 competition at QB had amazing games (OSU's QB threw for 6 TDs, and Mich's QB had a great game), CJ seemed a little like the Jake Rudock of 2 years ago. Tentative, mostly check downs, and his avg throw was 3 yrds ahead of the line of scrimmage to the sideline. He's playing Ferentz style, playing it safe and not making plays with his feet. 13-20 for 192 yrds is a good stat line, but not a stud stat line, esp when most of the yards were YAC yards.

7. Burning of Redshirts - well now we know, Stanley has gone from high school player to our #2. I'm excited about his future, though I'm not sure it made sense to burn his redshirt to hand off the ball a couple of times in mop up duty. What happens to Wiegers now? I hope Cook is taking reps at TE. We also burned the redshirt on a true frosh WR so that he could run two routes with 1 min to play without any targets. Toks looked good as a mop up RB, and I think it made sense to get him in there.

8. Scheel - oh the curious case of Jay Scheel rears its head again. Another spring game sensation (2nd yr in a row), and made waves by being named a starter, only to not play today. I hope he isn't seriously injured, as I was really really looking forward to see what he could do for us this year. He's the kind of athlete we desperately need this year.

9. WRs - I'm sorry, but Riley McCarron is not a starting Big 10 WR. It's a nice story that he works hard and walked on, but his hands are suspect, as is his speed. Smith had a solid game, and was called out by the TV guys for having some nice blocks, so let's hope he can kick it up to the next level.

10. Coaching - I'm not sure if it was new Kirk or old Kirk, but what was with going for it on 4th and 7 from like the 15 yard line with a big lead when that was the perfect chance to give the true frosh kicker game experience with a field goal? The play worked out, and we scored a TD, but it was a head scratcher call. Other than that, the play calling was decent. Loved the flea flicker, and we threw down field maybe twice, but overall, conservative play calling. No fake punts or risk taking. I suspect that was a result of the weak opponent and not showing our cards.

Nice post. I think we saw why Wadley does not start (but what is the difference if he gets just as many carries) when he totally missed his block on a pass play where Beathard got sacked.

I think we need to stop getting hung up about burning red shirts for freshmen. If anything, we should be excited that we have so many who out competed upper classmen for a higher spot on the depth chart. It speaks to an uptick in recruiting and a lot of talent coming into the team that is already pretty good. If the kids earn it, great! The redshirt is still there if they get hurt.

Although, I think the argument changes if it comes to burning one in the last game of the season.

This could very well be it. Plus, did they pretty much split time 50/50? Could be an attempt to keep them healthier.

I wasn't all that impressed with the D line play. I thought we got pushed around at defensive tackle given the level of competition. We got a couple of QB pressures, but there were a number of plays where their QB had a ton of time.

Greg had a tough day and we really missed Jewell.

Overall, I was pleased with the offense, but the defense has a ways to go.

"I think we saw why Wadley does not start". What did we see, just curious?

In response to op: I thought the defensive line (and linebackers) really struggled against the run and with the exception of the defensive ends we had zero pressure on MO QB the large majority of the day.

Jackson was amazing against Lazard last year.. Again, I don't know a ton about the ins and outs of every position but why didn't he take over for Mabin instead of Rugamba

Supposedly M of O was missing over 10 starters and their big RB was not at 100%. This must be factored in.

Still, I thought our O was right on track except we need to find a third WR somewhere and I wonder what happened to the use of TEs? We played in a vanilla way because there was no need not to.

I was not as impressed with our D. Our DL was being pushed around a lot and the pass rush from them was not good. We only got to the QB when our DE's were not blocked. We will have to blitz often in tougher games. Mabin had a very poor game against a very good WR. He needed some safety help and did not get it. King will have to cover our opponent's best receiver.

Our kicking game was outstanding.

They did throw to King's WR at least a few times. Granted, King wasn't lost like Mabin seemed to be all game.

I would assume the defense would have played better if Josey Jewell hadn't got tossed.

The only truly thing to worry about imho from this game going forward is pass protection. Keeping CJ healthy must happen.

i think the issue on burned redshirted is whether the guys are only seeing playing time in a blowout, like against the worst team on our schedule, then will ride the pine the rest of the year. This has been a pattern with ferentz blown red shirts.

Scott Chandler burned a redshirt to play three downs in a season and get no targets. Drew Tate had like 3 pass attempts his redshirt year. Drew Otts redshirt was burned 3/4 into the season to play special teams in a few games.

All 3 of those guys would have been mega studs their redshirt sr year and gave it up for mop up work when they were undeveloped and raw. Just as many of the 10 true Frosh who played in one series this week would be as 5th year seniors. I just hope stanly gets some real snaps this year to justify the decision to play him for one series in a blowout.

Ott played in every game after they pulled his redshirt........5 games.........don't let any facts get in your way, troll. The other info you posted probably isn't accurate either.

And if it doesn't, do you know what you'll do?

Was Nathan Chandier not a JUCO transfer QB so how did KF blow his redshirt exactly for 3 downs and no targets???? What?

Mitchell should be playing more. Speed/quickness/power.

The D-line is not a top 25 D-line. It's a passive/contain philosophy. Need a Matt Roth or an Adrian Clayborne in his junior year.

Daniels was blowing people out from his center position. That's what stood out to me, talk about a man on a mission. King might have kind of a long season where nobody tries to go after him.

I thought we were a bit soft up the middle. LBs need to play downhill a bit more. Our guys were kind waiting for the play to come to them. On one particular 3rd and short the LBs were about 5 yards off the ball and really did not attack the run. They ran it right at us for 5 yards. I will be glad to see Josie in there.
Outside of one pass breakup that was a real bad day for Mabin.
I feel MUCH better about the kicking game. Big, deep and high kick offs. Good way for a new fg kicker to break in as well.

Props to the crowd and the students given it was a holiday weekend.

when its 4th and 6 inside the Red Zone... and the game is not on the line...
if you kick the Field Goal, you get 3 points...
if you go for it and get the first down, you are most likely going to score the Touchdown.
which is worth 7 points.

therefore... if you do the math... all you have to do is figure if you can convert that play 43% of time or better.... if you can, then you go for it every time.

if you succeed 50% of the time....
out of 10 tries, you will have scored 35 points.... if you go for it.

if you kick the field goal, out of 10 tries... you will only score 30 points.

converting 43% of the time will give you 30 points.

Greg Davis has access to all the data, therefore there is no doubt that we convert 4th and 6 from inside the Red Zone greater than 43% of the time.

its the right call... Greg Davis did a good job.

Haha I was thinking the same thing about that 4th and 7. If there was ever a time NOT to go for it I thought that was it. Get the true freshman kicker some experience before we put him in a spot where he actually needs it.. Small sample size seemed good though yesterday!

What is with all the angst with true freshman "burning a redshirt to hand the ball off ...." or whatever? Is this the only game that gets played this year? Maybe you can answer this simple question for me. When is a good time to "burn a redshirt?"

What if the coaches wait until the third or fourth or 7th game to play them? Then we hear "WTF is wrong with these coaches, wasting half a year before "burning his redshirt."

Very few of y'all have a clue about what a good coaching decision is, but having a forum such as this, at least allows you to complain to someone other than your mother or your wife. Appreciate your analysis for the most part though, and for giving me something to bitch about, just not used to you being so positive. Carry on.

Better hope our LT doesn't go down or Beathard will be fresh meat to the dogs. Waechter played last 4 minutes and is too slow to play tackle. Had one occassion he looked lost on who to block. And just damn near tripped over his own feet out of his stance before finding someone to block on the late TD run by Mitchell.

This, folks if not for a couple of timely turnovers this could have been a close game. Well that and Miami's D is not very good. We are suspect on defense and pretty thin.

I thought CJ looked more than serviceable Saturday. Kittle dropped that TD in the endzone. His throw downfield to MVB was on the money there was just little separation. McCarron dropped that pass on the goal line. He really didn't need to do too much. Daniels and Wadley both looked good. Does anybody know the status of Hesse? Will he be 100% come Saturday? I think that will help keep the DL fresh

Too much homer in the post - but, given that you like to stimulate conversation, you throw some of the crowd bones ... so that you can still get them up close and land some body blows.

Anyhow, as I'm pulled in close, the D deserves far more of a critique in this discussion. What can we truly expect from this D? What will be the true face of this D?

A young QB was able to get VERY comfortable against us ... and was given enough time to hang Mabin out to dry. Don't get me wrong ... Mabin has to continue to improve. Some day he needs to learn to turn his head. But, all the same, the QB wasn't getting consistently harassed enough.

Why was this? Maybe because 2 regular starters from our front seven weren't on D for most of the game? Maybe because we had 2 newbies calling the D ... once Jewell was rightfully ejected (as opposed to just one newbie). With Hesse and Jewell out ... we effectively had 4 newer faces playing substantial snaps in the front 7. When you combine that with the fact that Miami was making us worry about the pass ... we were usually defending the run with few hats in the box.

Did we witness rust? Since there were 4 newer faces on the D (compared to last year) - were we witnessing a lack of chemistry/continuity?

In all frankness, some of what we observed simply reminds me of the Maine game back in 2008 - that was a game where we really let the opposition move the ball on the ground way too easily. However, the opposition in that game didn't have a passing game ... so we didn't give up as many points.

Given the personnel that we know we have ... I do expect the run D to clean up its issues. However, all the same, it is still alarming that missing 2 guys was able to have such an effect. Ideally guys step up as the "next man in" ... and they write their own stories.
