Iowans and University of Iowa students visiting Pasadena, Calif., for the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl game will have the opportunity to tour the USS Iowa at the Los Angeles Waterfront.
Admission is free for Iowa residents year-round thanks to the state's support in restoring the ship and assistance in converting it into an interactive museum, according to the Pacific Battle Center, the non-profit group that operates the museum. The group announced Wednesday that, because the Hawkeyes will be playing in the Rose Bowl, non-resident UI students will be given the same opportunity to tour the ship for free.
“We couldn’t be happier for the University of Iowa and Hawkeye nation on their accomplishments this season and welcome their staff, student body and boosters to come out and experience a day aboard their ship,” said Jonathan Williams, president and CEO of Pacific Battleship Center, in a news release.
Visitors will be asked to show proper identification before entering the museum, such as a valid Iowa driver's license or student I.D., the release said.
USS Iowa is the only battleship on the West Coast and opened as an interactive educational museum on July 7, 2012, and is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
