Saturday won't be the first time Iowa has donned an all black football uni, but I'm confident it will look better than the 1971 version trotted out by new head coach Frank Lauterbur. But I thought some of you might be interested in seeing this shot from the old days, courtesy of the University Archives and The Daily Iowan:

I actually like the helmets with Herky on them.

But it didn't lend to what Wadley said yesterday...something like "look great play great".

1971...1 win, 10 losses. But hey, we looked good doing it!

The black-and-white pic may not capture all the nuances, but I was there and saw these unis in person. They were not well received. Lots of booing when they were unveiled, and the thin gold stripes on the pants, believe it or not, looked red in the sunshine. But you're right about the record...pretty much the opposite of things now. And in Lauterbur's third and final season in 1973, Iowa went 0-11, so the Hawks are due for an undefeated season to balance that one out.

Here's a better look at the 1971 helmets that went with the all black unis pictured above. The decal is not Herky; it's a hawk in flight, a hawk that never was used by Iowa before or since, as far as I can tell, and with good reason.

Who was the opponent, Illinois or Indiana?

I hate to say this but the first thing I noticed was the QB dropping a load in his pants while being pummeled.

It was against Indiana....November 13, 1971. Iowa lost 14-7 on it's way to a dead last finish in the Big 10 at 1-8 in the league and 1-10 overall. Attendance for the Indiana game was 42,102 at Iowa Stadium.

Jack Harbaugh was the defensive backs coach for Iowa at the time.

If you would like more information, including a color chart, let me know.
