Iowa's Director of Marketing (Rick Klatt) being transferred

For what its worth, in my original post I typed what Dochterman said in his and Marc Morehouse's podcast "On Iowa Podcast;". I agree that this article makes it look like he will still have his job within the athletic department.

That's a relief. Now I can look forward to the next "Million Fan March", and I can rest easy in the knowledge that I will one day add a "Gold Bowl 4" t-shirt to my Hawkeye memorabilia collection.

First of all, I am not jealous of the corporations and wealthy folks who occupy the suites, but Iowa could emulate the pro stadiums an add a complete bar and restaurant (that could operate year round) with access from within the stadium. You would be surprised at the amount of room under the West stands.

I also think that if beer was sold, fans should have the option of buying seats in non-alcoholic, family sections. This works well in many ball parks and stadiums.

Iowa should also think about having mid-level name concerts after the early season games before it gets cold and the opponents are not very attractive.

It's funny, I was just thinking today that I don't even know where to go on game day to get tickets. Haven't had to in years, but I remember as a young adult easily spotting the ticket window at games, but I've gone to an average of 2-3 games a year for the last 10-15 years and cannot remember seeing a ticket window. Just saying.

somebody please clue me in regarding the pom pom disaster.

When we played Wisconsin a couple years ago near Veterans Day, it was Blackout Day and they had red, blue, and white pompoms handed out in specific sections. So one section was all blue, one all red, etc. Well, the blackout caused the blue pompoms to basically be unseen, which made it look like the fans were shaking red and white pom poms.

There is a ticket window on the SE corner of the stadium, where it may have been forever. Near the cop cars.

I have nothing to add about Klatt. But I would like to comment about the Gazette and how it just can't help itself when it comes to trying to diminish the Hawkeye program any chance it gets. The idea that there will be 10K empty seats for Maryland is silly...and I'll bet they know it.
Hlas is kind of a prick. Yeah, he can be funny but he takes subtle shots all the time. Points out anything that might be negative or shed bad light on iowa. You have to pay attention but he does it all the time.

Morehouse and Dochterman are excellent and do a great job covering the Hawks.

I guess projecting the Tiger Hawk on the water tower during the Pitt game wasn't enough...
Wait, they did this? No way. There would be 10 threads about it.

Maybe they will blow everyone's mind for the Minnesota game and shoot a tiger hawk spotlight up on the tower like a bat signal. The place will go nuts.

I didn't know if this had been mentioned.

But yes there was a projected Tiger Hawk on the water tower during the Pitt game. Sure it will be up there during the Minny game.

I continue to work in the world of corporate marketing and communications. Iowa marketing does NOT do a good job when it comes to tickets, etc. There is no way this many tickets should still be available for any Iowa football games. When you come across a situation like this you act on it and you get creative and you get butts in those seats. You do whatever you need to do ...

It starts with offering more ticket packages so families can attend with their children. Lower ticket prices to fill the empty seats is not doing to diminish the product in the end. For any fans who are "butt hurt" that someone next to them gets a $20 ticket while they paid $65 ... who cares. Your money is going to the U of I ... You need people at the event. As a marketer/communicator, I would want those seats filled and if I have to go around to different companies in Des Moines or elsewhere and offer cheap tickets ... then that's what I will do ... Lots of people are willing to come to games. There are many who don't go because of the cost and that very well may be why they haven't gone to Kinnick before.

Market research ... Find out what would entice people to go (not just the winning on the field).

My best example of the failure of Iowa's athletic ticket office: I had season tickets for about 10 years and gave them up after 2012. Not ONCE was I contacted and asked why. I have heard absolutely nothing from the Iowa ticket office in 3 years. THAT is a missed opportunity. I am one person who had two tickets (sidenote: I have been to all of the home games - minus NTexas) ... There are thousands of other Hawk fans who I am guessing experienced the same thing.

Getting 70,000 people into Kinnick is not an impossible task as a marketer. The people are here. This is the Hawkeye State. Yes, you will have to be a bit more creative in getting people to come and yes, you may have to adjust your ticket prices for the time being ... but you learn, you ADAPT and you don't keep doing things the way you have always done them because our world is quickly changing around us. What worked 5 years ago in marketing DOES NOT work today. We have 8-second attention spans, smartphones that we treat as body parts, and 24/7 news and social media access.

Iowa's failure for too long is that all it had to do is "put the ticket out there" and the fans will snatch them up. Five years ago? Sure, that worked. But our world has changed. And the Iowa ticket office has been very, very slow to adapt ... Empty seats does nothing for you. You get butts in those seats ...
