The 49ers have a huge decision to make that will have a major effect on the fortunes of their franchise for the next 5 years. Purdy has been giving them $30 million production at QB for less than a million dollars a year. But now he has three years in and is eligible for an extension.

Niners GM John Lynch has made it clear they want to keep him, but Spotrac says his market value is somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 years/$240 million.

IMO it would be a huge mistake to pay him that much. He would go directly from being the most underpaid QB in the league to the most overpaid QB in the league.

I would trade him. Let someone else overpay him.

Sam Darnolds successful season says no. Purdy’s success was the sum of a good line and great weapons. I wouldn’t give him a high “wins above replacement “ number.

Can they trade him?

As a Broncos fan, who has been hoping for a franchise QB for about 8 years now, there's nothing like seeing fans of other teams suggesting they reward the QB that got them to the Superbowl by washing their hands of him.
Purdy benefits from some excellent skill position players and a good offensive line. Shanahan figured out how to make Purdy good, he can do it with someone else. Mastery of Shanahan’s offense is Purdy’s top skill. He won’t turn around a team with a different offense all by himself

Tebow Time was fun as ****. He won us at least 1 playoff game.

If they give Purdy almost $60M per year then it will be at least 5 years before they get anywhere close to the Super Bowl.

Look at the Bengals as an example. They had Burrow and Chase on rookie contracts and were getting great production at a bargain. They went to one Super Bowl and very nearly went a second straight time.

Now that Burrow got a massive extension they had to make cuts elsewhere on the roster and the defense in particular took a huge hit. As a result, the Bengals have missed the playoffs two straight years despite Burrow putting up MVP level stats.

The Bengals picked up Chase’s 5th year option, so his cap hit will more than double next year. It might be awhile before the Bengals get back to the playoffs.

No way San Fran ever wins a super bowl if they max him out

I get that. My point is more that NFL contracts have gotten silly and there’s not direct correlation between a large guaranteed contact for QBs (Daniel Jones and Dak stand out) and success.

John Lynch may be smart enough to see this but the rest of the league isn’t.

Purdy is at the same point in his career that Fields was when Chicago traded him, except that he has a better resume. Someone out there will be willing to overpay to get him. I would oblige them.
Got it. I thought this was his FA year. He wants a big extension with 1 year left on his rookie deal. He is best off taking a reasonable deal to stay with the Niners, and keep throwing the ball to Kittle, Samuel and Aiyuk.

Another thing to keep in mind is that since Purdy was a late round selection there is no fifth-year option.

$239M, tops. Not a penny more

The answer is probably not. He’s likely a product of a coach’s system with a bunch of high end tools to throw to.

But he possibly is, which means someone is going to pay something around that much for him.

I would suggest this isn’t completely true the year Purdy got hurt in the playoffs and the 49ers couldn’t move the ball a lick

The Niners are not going to start the negotiations at 4 years for $240 million. I would start him out at 5 years for $125 mill.

And then if I am Purdy I take that deal WITH MOSTLY OR ALL GUARANTEED MONEY so more Cap money can go to keep the other offensive players there

He will still be super rich by 2031

That’s because Garoppolo and Lance were also hurt and the Niners were forced to play their 4th string QB against one of the best defenses in the league. Until he also got hurt and the Niners had no choice but to put Purdy back in with a torn ligament in his arm, so he could repeatedly hand the ball off against an elite defense who knew he couldn’t do anything other than hand the ball off.

My guess is it settles in around $50m per year with around $160 guaranteed over 4 years. Is he worth it, I don’t know. He is great with a good cast around him and playing in that system. Is it so complicated a “decent” qb couldn’t do the same at 25% of the cost? Seems to me the system just requires a smart QB is a decently mobile and can make quick decisions. Not saying those are a dime a dozen; but seems you could find someone cheaper. That said, no Owner, GM or Coach wants to filter QBs every 2 or 3 years
