Is there ANY WAY this team can snap out of it and make an NCAA run?

When are we going to realize this team is not 'talented'. Talent might be the most over-used word in sports. Even the worst teams in the nation say they have 'talent'. We have 2 really good players and a bunch of role guys. Barring upsets on the path we are on and the first round team taking us lightly from a scouting perspective there is no way this team can make a run. None. Too many flaws.

Jay Bilas (one of the few solid analysts at the four-letter network) believes that Iowa could fall to a 8 or 9 seed.
He's more optimistic than most Iowa fans, as he said if we win our first game, Iowa would be a tough match-up for that 1 seed, in the second round. Not, that Iowa would be a dream opponent for the other team.
Granted, he's not supposed to say the latte.

Me thinks that Grayson Allen tripped Jay Bilas to the ground, one too many times.

When filling out my bracket I got one lock.....Iowa losing
Put a fork in this season it's over.
This team will never succeed if their outside shooting isn't on fire.
They have absolutely have no post presence. None. zip zilch nada.
With no post play this team is dead in the water
a corpse could play as well as woody.

Will be nice not going against teams that haven't scouted us a lot. Having said that, we need to find our defense again. Doesn't seem like we're going to be scoring in the 80's again anytime soon. Defense can get us going. Just not sure if it will magically show up or not.
No, it won't. It will all depend on our opponent and how good or bad they are.

We'll most likely be facing an 11 seed and probably either a decent mid-major or another major conference team that snuck in. However, given our struggles down the stretch, I expect the committee to do us no favors in terms of a matchup, and will more than likely have the toughest draw of the 6/11 groups.

Call me crazy but I think we can win more than 2 games. Not sure how many more after that but I see a run for these guys. Fought back all game and had another chance to win at the end. We can't put ourselves in these holes and expect to get out of it. When we were rolling we were burying teams early in the game and early in the shot clock, they can do that again for a short stretch.

I actually think there is a chance we can make a Sweet 16 run if...

- opposing teams won't fully appreciate how to defend Uthoff and Jok
- Gesell and Clemmons are adequate (really, that's all we need from them)
- the bench contributes adequately (really, that's all we need from them too)
- the coaching staff contributes adequately (really, that's all the team needs from you).

Maybe if we forget to bring Gesell to the game.

He's like a beaten puppy late in a game. No confidence or smarts about it. I dread to see him with the ball under 2 minutes. He needs a shot of T or something to be a confident young man again and have some swag. Playing scared does not work. No mental toughness with this team.

They forgot how to win and be confident. Heads down and sloppy play. No way they win and if they do its one and done.

I think going 1-1 is a reasonable goal for this group. Someone would have to hand us a second game.

Big advantage to Iowa if no opposing coaches watches tape on 2nd half of B1G on how to defend Iowa or how to attack Iowa's defense. If Iowa can face a coach of Lickliter ability, then we have a shot.

In 2014 we played UT under very similar circumstances--terrible losing streak. We played them close. I assume we folded at the end, because that is all I am used to seeing. I recall Marble made a shot at end, but the defense gave up a big shot to lose it?

Yes.
All year I have argued having MG and Sapp in tandem at the guard positions was eventually going be our undoing. They are pitiful offensive players.

The solution, given what we have, has been obvious: 1) move Jok to the
off guard; 2) have Uhl and Baer share minutes at small forward; and, 3) let MG and Sapp share the point.

While not a perfect solution, I think it would improve the shooting and rebounding. But, it should have been tried months ago. It is probably too late now.

This, my god this. Move Jok to the #2, start Baer at the #3. We would have a legitimate scorer at every position, assuming Woody is ever allowed to be thrown a post entry pass. With that length, I would also do some 3/4 court pressing to start, depending on the opponent. Aggressive aggressive all the way on offense and defense.

We all have seen this team's potential. When they are playing well they can beat anyone. Obviously, we haven't seen that team for quite some time, but it seems to me that there are examples of a team limping into the NCAA Tourney, then suddenly getting hot. This team has a week to sit and think about what has gone wrong these past 4 weeks, as they watch other teams taking center stage. It's gut-check time for these seniors. What great medicine it would be for them to turn it around and lead our beloved Hawks on an improbable run.

Sure there is. They've been playing several levels below their ability lately; they could turn around and end up being the team no one wants to play.

It doesn't look good. I remember the faces of Utoff, Gessell and Woodbury in the postgame interviews after Illinois. They are in shock and despair and Gessell looked like deer caught in the headlights. If they want the season to continue they will probably have a better than 50% chance of winning at least one game. If they are done and simply want it to be over they won't be able to muster what is needed to win.

I'm gonna need a definition of your use of the word "adequate"...thanks.

Iowa lost their 10 games by 46 total points. Why does that matter? Because they were basically in every game they did lose, and actually led towards the end in many of them. The fact they lost those close games is concerning, but might lead one to the conclusion that if they can magically fix that flaw, they have a deep run in them.

Conversely one might deduce that losing 6 of your last 8, and 5 of your last 6 is a recipe for an early dismissal from the tourney.

I see a 7 or 8 seed, possible a 1st round victory, and then a loss to a higher seed. Given the way they are playing I'd love an 8 seed in DSM with the possibility of a game vs KU.

I hope that doesn't go against us now. We've lost confidence so losing close games is a recurring theme that this team may not be able to get over. Over these seniors Iowa careers, they have lost a lot of close games and lost a lot of games late, too bad.

If we do start making a run, this board will become a very interesting place. Confidence is an interesting beast.....it can turn either way on a dime. If these Hawks win the first game, I would not want to be their second opponent.

That is all.

Agree. Heck, Iowa wins the first game, they should be able to go out and play loose against a higher seed. I still think this team can gain some confidence. This Iowa team with a touch of swagger and playing loose would be a dangerous team and one I wouldn't want to face as a higher seed.

Forget the 2-3. It stinks. I'd rather watch Uhl play man against a larger 5 with some weakside help (when Woody sits). Our zone stinks. It's not a Jim Boeheim 2-3. We have the length to do it, but we don't do it well. Our guys play better both ways when we're committed to man defense. We rebound better. We run the secondary break better.

I'll remind you.....Led almost the entire game, lead got very big at times.... Gave up the lead for the first time around the 3 minute mark. Managed to send it to OT, got crushed 14-1 in the overtime period after going 0-8 from the field. Business as usual unfortunately....

Their off ball help and sags are incredibly stupid and slow in the zone. How they have failed to correct this is one of the many unknowns in their downfall.
I'd like to see them speed the game up as much as possible. Playing a half court game is like poison to them on both offense and defense.
Get the scores back up into the 80s.
