Where's the "I don't know" option? I looked at a few videos from that era and found the definition:
The Salute:
The salute was executed by extending the right arm stiff to an upward 45° angle and then straightening the hand so that it is parallel to the arm. Usually, an utterance of "Sieg Heil", "Heil Hitler!", or "Heil!" accompanied the gesture.
History:
The Nazi salute was not invented by Adolf Hitler or Benito Mussolini, nor is it limited in time to the Second World War or in place to Europe. The salute dates all the way back to the Roman Empire and is properly known as the Roman salute (Saluto Romano).
Historian Opinion:
Historian A: Historian of fascism here. That was a Nazi salute - and a very belligerent one too.
Historian B: ...this gesture is not a Nazi salute. This is a socially awkward autistic man's wave to the crowd where he says, "my heart goes out to you."
