is this the most depressed u have ever been after an Iowa sporting event?

Not even close. Don't really know why. Probably because this season has been gravy since the NW game. I'm a little disappointed, but I think we proved to a lot of people what a good team we are, and I am really looking forward to a marquee matchup in a major bowl game, hopefully the Rose.

1985 Rose Bowl was the worst. I was in junior high and had really started to care about Hawkeye football. The whole family went, did the parade and all the pageantry.

I believed so strongly that we were going to win. I just felt in my heart that if you want something so badly, you can wish and pray hard enough that it will come true.

Not only did we lose badly, but I lost a bit of innocence that day.

For me it was:

1). January 1, 1986. UCLA 45, Iowa 28

2). March 22, 1987. UNLV 84, Iowa 81

3). March 17, 2006. Northwestern State 64, Iowa 63

Last night is pushing for 4th. But this team has been incredible, and they have a lot of guys coming back next year.

1985 Rose Bowl by far followed by 2002 Orange Bowl. The 85 Rose Bowl is the worst because we truly did have the best team in the country that year. And the Elite 8 loss to UNLV is my worst basketball memory. With so much riding on last night's game I am surprised it doesn't hurt more. Probably because the season isn't over. I am hoping for a Rose Bowl against Stanford or Fiesta against Notre Dame. Either would be a great matchup I would love to see. Plus I think the fact that we have so much of this team coming back next year. If Ott gets his redshirt and King decides to come back we could be even better next year.

As others have said, if this were the last game of the year I'd be more depressed. I'm excited to see the resolve of this team and watch us play another top quality team. I think this bowl game can make or break the remainder of Ferentz's contract. Will we bounce back and show that we are a tough team capable of winning big games and enter the off season with confidence on a high? Or do we get through the bowl game and resign to being a good bowl team in the upper middle of the pack in the B1G these next five years, similar to what we usually are? There's a lot of pieces to this puzzle returning next year and some good recruits coming in a year or two. A big bowl win over Stanford or Notre Dame would be huge for national perception of the program.
What an odd thing to say.

Jacksonville's Pembrooke Burrough's put-back in in the NCAAs in 1970 (?). Devastating. Crushing.

I'm pissed off. I was depressed this morning. i went back and rewatched that drive. Michigan State got away with murder. Referees swallowed their whistles and it's f'ing ridiculous. And the closer they got to the end zone the wise it got. The chop block on Fisher and the hold on jewel were absolutely blatant and have to be called regardless of situation. Ridiculous.

Nope....this was a clean game and called well by the stripes. IOWA lost by the stretch of an arm.

i really thought we had it. I'm depressed and I'm just a tavern hok. That's gotta b a long ride home for the 10s of thousands of hawk fans who made the trip to Indy.

But for me it doesn't compare to the depression I felt after our elite 8 hoops loss to unlv in March of 87. I was depressed for a long while after that one

But this football team, nobody, and I mean nobody saw an undefeated regular season coming after that total collapse to end last year. So there's that. Plus we have a young team really, and maybe even a possibility to have Ott and King next year. And we have another game to look forward to, which could b the rose .... Although I can c us getting hosed on that and winding up in the peach

What an unbelievable season. So close to the final 4. Would love to add a bowl trophy to the case to put next to all the traveling trophies and the b10 west trophy
LOL

It hurts because part of me felt like this team was invincible. Up 4 with 9 minutes left I would have never guessed that was the ending. Definitely a season I will remember forever

UNLV is #1 for me. If they got by that game, I'm convinced they win the whole thing. I'd be less confident about this team running through Alabama and OU.

I was depressed quite a bit after watching Ronnie Lester going down against Louisville in 1980 final four, which I attended that was also in Indianapolis too, and up until that point in the game, Iowa was playing them pretty evenly. And I also had a class with Ronnie then too and still remember him coming to that class with his shoelaces untied then. But it was more of a missed big opportunity (kind of like it was last night) than feeling like Iowa was really in the dumps with a bad team and a bad season that weren't expected, that could be said on other occasions. Iowa was also a team that year that throughout it defied expectations too, not being a real high seed in the tournament then either.

That RoseBowl was brutal for a few reasons.

First, my pain started when Chuck was denied the Heisman. Then, I watched as Iowa didn't so much lose against UCLA as they kept handing the ball to them like they were trying to handicap themselves.

If anything this year has shown me we are able to be an elite team, we may not have won the game but they proved to me that a National Championship caliber team is something that can happen at Iowa. I never truly believed that before. This should have long term benefit to the program.

And I think it also showed that not only is trying to get a shot at winning the National Championship a battle of winning games on the field, but winning the hearts and minds of the media and other infrastructure that control who gets in to the mix of competing for it. We've seen so much this year how Iowa keeps getting pushed down as the "outsider looking in" in the many discussions on whether Iowa is "worthy" of being considered part of the elite team category. So hopefully, even if Iowa isn't in the playoffs this year, this year will have served notice for the future that will allow down the road for Iowa not to be considered too much of an "outsider team" to be considered for the playoffs in the coming years if they have a similar season then. Though we might not see it today with our disappointment in this loss, I think down the road, this year's events could help future teams a lot. Will also help a lot with recruiting too, which will allow Ferentz to get a 4 or 5 star recruit at times instead of having to grow all of his stars from 2 and 3 star recruits.

Actually the loss to NW in 09 was more depressing to me.

This is bad though. We could have been playing for the national championship. Now we get a consolation game.

Those two things are just so far apart in my mind.

I disagree with this post for the following reasons.

1) If Iowa wins the game they are in the playoffs.

2) Iowa started the season no where near the Top 25 yet they were in a position to win it all yesterday afternoon.

3) Anyone who knows Iowa history knows Iowa has jumped several teams in past seasons for better bowl games. Where is your conspiracy theory when THAT happens?

4) Talking heads are trying to get ratings, of course they are going to say things to stir the pot.

5) The talking heads are not Hawkeye homers so from their point of view it is valid to question Iowa. Iowa got the benefit of the doubt after the 02-04 run and MSU gets that benefit after their recent accomplishments. Most of the talkers didn't even watch an entire Iowa game this year. But not becuz they hate Iowa, becuz for them that's true of most teams they analyze. They don't have time to follow Iowa like we do.

6) In summation your honor. The thin-skin-crowd that cries disrespect at every turn needs to grow up and stop acting like concernedstudent1950.

Elite 8 loss to UNLV definately... i felt Hawks had a better chance to win nat championship that year in bball then this year in footall..

This is why this loss hurts so much. Iowa was so close.... so Close. I mean, the 4th and 2, almost stopping them on the touchdown. The crazy interception in the end zone. So Close man.

With that said, you have to tip your cap to MSU. They fought and never quit on those plays.

Lots of anger and bitterness at the way it unfolded- like water torture or something sickening and F&*&ING wrong like that, sports wise. So, 12 consecutive wins and not even conference champs. Rose bowl is good consolation, I guess, and it will be important to win for the B1G and the program but this is a bad disappointment. Don't want to look on the bright side, not going to for a long time.

We lost very late in the 2011 champ game vs Wisky...that was the most depressed I've been.

I know how it feels. And it will make it THAT much sweeter when you get back to Indy and win the damn thing.

I was bummed because of how close the Hawkeyes were to punching their ticket to the playoffs, but ultimately I wasn't really as upset as I thought they would be just because it was a game that was still up for grabs until Beathard got sacked with about 20 seconds to go, and how entertaining and hard hitting the game was.

I would've probably been more bummed if Iowa came out and got run off the field like the bowl game last year as that would've just gave a bit of legitimacy to all of the criticisms against Iowa this season

Strangely enough, not even close to the most depressed after an Iowa loss. The Rose Bowl losses were depressing as we got blown out. The Orange Bowl blowout in 2002 was depressing just because of that, we got blown out of the water. The Elite 8 loss to UNLV was depressing as we should have won it easily and had a 2nd half collapse. The loss last night stings but it was an epic battle and we came up a couple inches short...no shame in the outcome or effort. It took a drive for the ages to beat the Hawks last night, not depressed in the least bit last night or the morning after.
This, after being on the field for more than 9 minutes speaks volumes about how good our defense is. MSU was just a slight bit better, which was all it took.

Close, but the loss to Jacksonville in basetball oh so many years ago hurt a bit more because that team had a chance of winning it all. Also, no Rose Bowl consolation.

The Orange Bowl is the birth place of my hatred for the USC Trojans.....and of course Pete Carroll.

But probably the hardest loss to take was the 2006 NCAA First Rd upset to Northwestern State. It was my freshman year in college and I skipped half of a class just to watch the 1st half of the game. Iowa seemed in good shape, so I went back to my class I was late for, and then to my next one. By the time I was done, the game was near the end and of course the rest is history as they say....

And to make matters worse, I was surrounded by a ton of people who were either Iowa State fans or just didn't like Iowa in general (because they hated life, I guess. That's usually what I assume when I hear somebody who hates Iowa....like Minnesota fans.)

I suppose if I had been surrounded by these same kind of fans that hate Iowa while watching the game on Saturday, that probably would've made it the worst...

1980 Final Four loss to Louisville. We had a real shot until Ronnie Lester went down late in the first half. The UNLV loss in the Elite Eight stung almost as bad because we were smoking them the first half. As far as football goes, the 1985 team's loss in the Rose Bowl really hurt. Harmon had 1 fumble the entire year and fumbles FOUR TIMES in the biggest game of his career AND drops a wide open pass in the end zone.

It is quite odd that Harmon had so many turnovers and mistakes in that game...what are the odds of so few during the season and then a bunch of them in a big, well, money game?

Astronomical I would guess...

UNLV was much worse than last week, IMHO...Iowa was clicking and a fan "assumes" that it will be a big win! Not so fast my friends...

Iowa played toe to toe Saturday, nothing to be ashamed about...MSU shoved it down Iowa's throat, little by painful little that last drive...and such is life at times.

This x 1,000. I am already over the MSU loss. Perhaps it is because I was 18 when we lost to Jacksonville and I am now 63. Yes, this is the answer.
