I don't want to see a return of the GDGD offensive scheme, but it seems to me that on 1st down they need to throwing some high completion rate passes, even if the passes are for very small gains. VandenBerg seems a little like the forgotten man at times
Easley and Wadley are seeming to click with Stanley as receivers. This is the way I see it going forward. ISM as well. No different than when JVB and CJB clicked.
The encouraging part going forward is we have receivers catching balls, and getting behind the secondary. Easley got behind them yesterday when PSU was clearly playing keep everything in front of them.
We also aren't afraid to throw on first down. Fine, the only issue as I see it is we are 100% run on 2nd down if we throw on first. I know factually we were 100% before last night, and I don't recall that changing.
The play calling? The pitch in the end zone was a head scratcher. But we used to run naked bootlegs out of the end zone as well. And they worked. Not all the time. When these plays don't work it's painfully obvious.
To me this is a combination of KOK and BF. I have no issue with it so far.
Last night was obvious KF football. Clearly PSU has enormous talent. They are a legit contender to make the CFP. That we were close is remarkable really.
Look, I like these young kids on the team. They're fun to watch. They have heart. Anyone who has followed Iowa football knows this isn't always the case. I don't know how many wins this translates to, but I like what I'm seeing.
We lose some critical pieces next year. But even there, it looks like we have serviceable replacements.
The sky is not falling. We have a pretty good group of guys. Better than many prior years. Hopefully the record will reflect this. But again, anyone that follows college football knows that isn't always the case. But we're nowhere near there yet. There is some serious improvement that needs to happen. But at least this year there is hope improvement is coming each and every week.
