Isaiah White commits to

I'm trying to figure out if the Gopher coaches have a recruiting strategy or are they just spit balling and taking the highest rated recruits they can get? You have to imagine every scenario about where guys likely end up, weight wise. This looks like one, piss poor job of that.

No wonder they have had so much attrition in the last decade. And by the looks of things... they'll have several more.

Maybe J is just showing signs of senility or the recruiting coaches aren't very good at their jobs!

What a dumpster fire in Dinkytown.

Interesting, next year two of the gophers top recruits, McKee 133/141 (saw the kid at Fargo and he's never making 133) and Marko 149 (who has a win over Happel) appear to be headed to a log jam. They have Thorn at 141 and he's only a freshmen and Short at 149 is only a sophomore. Then you have this years top recruits red shirting, Stroker at 149 and Early at 157. Kingsley is at 157 this year and he's back next year. Where and when do Stroker, Early, Mckee, and Marko fit in the line up? Thorn 141 next three years, Short 149 next two years, Kingsley 157 next year? I got to believe coaches recruit on needs and projections, what was their thought process and plan? Look for some guys to transfer.

It's no secret... well, apparently it is to PapaBear, that the Gopher wrestling program is in dire straits. They have been losing the top in-State kids for several years now. Some of their higher profile kids have left for the Dakota schools, and they've also lost some excellent assts in recent years. The topping on the cake was last year's collapse at Nationals.

Many of their best results have come when their studs were underclassmen. Many have regressed as they got older. High schools stars and their parents notice these things. Hence the vast export of talent from Minnesota to other schools around the country.

J was great for the program. If Eggum gets the HC job, they are a mid tier team for the forseeable future. Tough being a Gopher fan these days. Their fired AD is a criminal. Their football and MBB teams are a mess. Wrestling team has possibly 1-2 potential AAs this year, at best!

Be glad you're not a Gopher fan.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea.

Minnesota certainly puts out plenty of talented HS kids.... until U of Minn gets it together, they're always welcome south of the border. ;-)

Much of MN's current situation is due to guys like Short and Kingsley not meeting expectations. Depth creates competition. McKee will hold 133 until Thorn graduates. Marko was committed to WI and decomitted, then chose Gophers later in the process. You don't turn talent away cuz they might not start four years. Nobody is guaranteed anything. Sorry for the very scattered thoughts.

MN's big flaw recruiting was the misses at 174. Wanzek will be a serviceable place holder til we get someone else, but the fans will wait impatiently.

Well I don't think it's that much different than some of Iowa's issues for several years. You recruit what you believe to be high end guys, and they don't pan out as planned, so you're recruiting depth and at the same time hoping to patch a hole. We had several multi year starters that didn't see the podium at NCAA's. That's not "the plan", and there is no magic pill or stud transfer always available to stop the bleeding as quick as people would like.

The sport has always been better for me when our rivals are strong, and present severe challenges, some of those which Iowa loses. That hasn't changed. I don't foresee doom and gloom for the Gophers over a prolonged stretch, and for damn sure I wish Iowa State would get it's act together and make it the EVENT it used to be when Iowa and Iowa State got together. There is no particular thrill for me beating Northwestern 54-0. I'd take a hotly contested 17-16 win over Iowa State or Minnesota any day of the week and twice on Sunday's, from a pure entertainment perspective, coupled with some outstanding wrestling which we've witnessed numerous times. That's as good as it gets. And when you can hammer those really good teams every once in awhile, that's fun too.

Iowa has enough issues for me without worrying too much about what's bothering other programs. Just needs to be more of them having issues I guess................;)
