ISU #14 AP

I didn't watch the Texas Tech game, just saw the score, so you got me there. Point conceded. I did watch most of the TCU game, though, and while I agree there were momentum-changing plays, my point was ISU was never trailing in that game.

All of that said, the main point is the psychology is a lot different now that ISU is a serious contender for the conference title. How do they respond to that added pressure? We will see.
Oh, absolutely agree with you. We are 'dogs at Morgantown next Saturday, and I think that is the correct prediction.

Jealousy isn't pretty, gang. I hate ISU, and most ISU fans I know are obnoxious, but I have to appreciate the challenges ISU football has and the fact that ISU is, so far this season, overcoming them brilliantly.

What's wrong with giving credit where credit is due? When Iowa beats top 5 teams, we're all pretty excited about it, even if other people claim those teams were overrated, right?

Iowa State had NEVER beaten a top five team, EVER, and now they've beaten TWO just this month. And now ranked in the top 15 in the country? Congrats to them. I hope they keep it going and win the Big 12, something else they've never done.

It's unbecoming of Hawkeye fans to belittle ISU. I hate them, but I respect what they've accomplished this season.
Be careful with posts like this - a few folks will accuse you of being an ISU fan. ;)

You said Iowa State could win a bunch of national championships and Iowa could lose every game and Iowa would still be better. That's absurd.

Now, if you had said Iowa State could win national championships and Iowa could lose every game and you would still like Iowa better, your point would be more intelligible and far less ridiculous.
That was pretty much implied. But you had to be a dink head about it. Congratulations.

Jealous? Hardly. They could win multiple national championships in FB and BB, and Iowa could lose every game in every sport for 10 years, and Iowa is still better than Iowa State.

Historically they are still a joke. The “love” you are seeing for them now is more like an “Isn’t that cute?” attitude from the media. They are going to need to string together several years of winning/bowl games to even sniff relevancy.
I wouldn’t get to cocky on Iowa. most big boy programs view Iowa like you view ISU!!!!

I know they rarely reciprocate the enthusiasm when we do well, but I am very happy to see this! Better series for us going forward (assuming this is sustainable) and a reason to cheer for ISU. They are bringing defense to a league that has traditionally been allergic.

And the fan of what team is spouting this??

The psychology is much different when you are expected to win. Should be interesting. One thing is for sure, though, this Iowa State team is more than capable of winning out.

I agree completely with this. It is also why many Hawkeye fans have grown sick of the ISU series. Now, I've been one of them. The thing is, if ISU is going to play at this level (realistically contending for a conference championship) then I love playing them every year.

But, many ISU fans do not understand that bolded part when it comes to football. Maybe they do in basketball, which is why the pain of their recent teams getting knocked out in the round of 32 or 16 hurts so much. "The psychology is much different when you are expected to win."

Ya, totally agree with you and BlackNGoldBleeder on the change in psychology when you are expected to win.

The reality though, it is impossible to contend consistently until you can recruit like the elite programs(OK, TX, etc) consistently. Over a long season, you don't have the depth to withstand injuries or other attrition. Additionally, when you have to play the elite programs every year, instead of every other year (Ex: Big 10 MI, OSU, PSU), it makes it even harder.

Why would you want the Hawkeyes to be beat more often if ISU was this good every year? Hawkeye fans continually cast ISU as one of the worst teams ever in the worst conference in the country but yet it took 19 seasons under Ferentz to finally get a winning record against the Cyclones. Had the Cyclones won that close game this season he would still be searching for a winning record.

1) that was a stupid reply to my post that said no such thing
2) my post was about handling the psychology of being EXPECTED TO WIN. That's something your football program hasn't had to do for what, 15 years? I'm not talking about being a 6-7 point favorite over a team like Kansas or UNI either. I'm talking about being expected to win your big games / important games / rivalry games, etc.

Try being the hunted for a while. It is a different experience. It is also why most Hawkeye fans feel like our true rivals are Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota (less so now), and Iowa State perhaps in this order depending on where you live in the state or grew up in the state.

I never see threads about Wisconsin, Nebraska, or Minnesota every day on this site, I'm going to go ahead and disagree with this statement.

Create a poll. Ask people that post on this site to click who they feel Iowa's biggest rival is. Even with 35+ of you ISU fans clicking on your team's name, you'll see.

"They are going to need to string together several years of winning/bowl games to even sniff relevancy" Like Iowa? Five straight losses, looking like a high school team against Stanford and Tennessee. Oh, and ISU is Bowl eligible. Iowa is not. There isn't one cupcake left on Iowa's schedule to get us over the magical number of 6 so that we can go to a mediocre Bowl. It's one hell of a long shot but ISU could possibly go 12-2, 11-3, 10-4. Meanwhile, Iowa, the relevant program will be lucky to get to 7-6. (Win one of the next 4 and a bowl game)

Ya, your god father, Hayden lol always downplayed the importance of the Iowa State game "publicly", but "privately" and "behind closed doors", said it was a huge game and affected recruiting, perception, etc.

The passion of the fans, the concern over Matt Campbell, the belief by some that there can only be 1 successful program in the state of Iowa, the 10-10 record over the last 20 years, seems to indicate something, lol

I can tell you Iowa is plenty passionate about Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Minnesota too. In fact, if you are on this site enough, you'll see all kinds of threads about these three schools in addition to Iowa State. The thing is, the Nebraska and ISU fans lurk here waiting for a thread and then it blows up and appears to be extra passion. Wisconsin fans are pretty comfortable with how they've fared of late, so you don't see many of them here yapping (sort of like how you don't find many of us on your boards, you know?). The 10-10 record over the last 20 years is sure nice when it includes 5-straight. Why not call it 15-10 Iowa over the last 25 years? Or 10-5 Iowa over the last 15 years? I think I might know the answer!

At any rate, I have stated over and over on this board that ISU has a good team in 2017. It is possible that Campbell has an excellent thing going and you're about to dominate the B12 and (even better!) Iowa for the next decade. At any rate, you didn't beat us this year and you should be worrying about more important things. I can tell you not many Hawkeye fans were on the ISU boards in 2002 looking for validation, so why are you here?

Wait. Does history matter, or doesn't it. Or only when it works for your narrative?
They're hot and they aren't a blue blood. It's fun to see teams like that succeed.

Well, I'm a lifelong Hawkeye fan, but I say kudos to ISU. I'm happy for you guys. Some the Hawkeye fans on this board are just terrible.

They haven't had this moment in a long time. Let them enjoy it. History tells us that Matt Campbell will leave in the next couple of years and they will regress to the mean. In the meantime, as Hawkeye fans, show a little class will ya? You're making the rest of us look bad with your spiteful dribble. Concerning their ranking, they ABSOLUTELY deserve their ranking. Tell me one team besides Notre Dame that has two better wins then ISU? Just one. You can't. And tonight, I predict they will be in the top 12.

P.S. It doesn't hurt that I was in Vegas a month ago and bet $20 on ISU to win the Big 12. The odds were a ridiculus 1,000 to 1. If they can somehow just make it to the Big 12 championship game, I'm going to hedge it and cash in a cool $10k. Go Cyclones :)

Simply because Iowa fans wont admit it. You have multiple threads about ISU but played Minnesota this last weekend, which many claim is a bigger rival? Yeah right.

I think I even stated in my first post about this that Minnesota was to a lesser extent given recent history... but you probably weren't here to see all of the PJ Fleck mocking that has gone on. And very few Gopher fans come here given they've got nothing much to say.

I admit this - ISU has been a nuisance to the Hawks since 2001 or so. Most of the time, beating ISU has done nothing for Iowa and losing to them looks bad. I've also said you have a darn good team this year. Like I stated earlier, you have a chance to win the B12 and you're on this board arguing with us about how much we care about your team??? That's insane, you ought to be worrying about winning your final games. That's what Hawkeye fans do on our board when we have a good team. We don't go over to your boards to seek validation.

Ya, Iowa State is a nuisance on your schedule? Sounds a bit arrogant tol to those of us outside of hawkeye nation. lol Fans love it, tickets sold out, Etc. Alabama/Auburn, Michigan/Michigan St, Etc, this is college football.

Either you seem to imply this game should be a guaranteed win for Iowa?

Or ISU does not help your SOS enough? The SOS really only comes into play in CFP rankings. Are you saying playin ISU hurts your chances or making the CFP?

This year the Iowa-ISU game is hurting ISU. But I still think the series should be continued. Hell, that win may be what makes Iowa bowl-eligible.
