Being ignorant means "lacking knowledge." Most ISU fans simply did not know (or they ignored) the full extent of Fred's love of the NBA game. In this video, Fred shows his love for the NBA; when he had time while coaching Iowa State, he watched NBA games (not college games) and tried to pick up ideas "from the best minds in the world." The video: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:12999235

In addition, it's also interesting how so many ISU fans thought ISU was Freddy's dream job (OBVIOUSLY NOT) and that the EARLIEST he would consider leaving would be not until all of his kids graduated from high school (OBVIOUSLY NOT).

ISU fans were wrong on so many levels when it came to Fred. Their 5 years of living in a fantasy world have come to a VERY ABRUPT end. But hey, remember that Sweet 16 appearance? Me neither.

I think Fred will go great in the NBA. But the Bulls? Even Phil Jackson (ironically replaced by Iowa State's Tim Floyd) got pushed out the door after winning 6 NBA Championships in 9 years coaching the Chicago Bulls.

I really wish Fred Hoiberg success but will his fate be any different than previous Chicago Bulls coaches? Will he last 5 years? Will his health (2 heart surgeries) hold out? The Bulls roster is aging and has a history of injuries. Will Fred win any more games than the previous coach? Will be be able to deliver an NBA championship or has that ship already sailed?

I think Fred should have gone back to the MN Timberwolves (he was in the front office for 4 years before leaving for the Iowa State job), who have a very young, very talented roster and where Fred has a great relationship with the owner, Glen Taylor and President, Flip Saunders; and he would only be 3.5 hours away from Ames.

I'm as big a Hawkeye fan as there is, but I can acknowledge that he was a great hire for ISU. In the past, Hawkeye fans called this scenario a very acceptable pptential conclusion to our most recent hire. He leaves the cupboard extremely full, the program in a much better place, and the position a very good opportunity for another great coach. Unfortunately for them, the timing is not ideal.

was at a party last weekend...there was not one single ISU fan who was not convinced that the Hoiberg going to Chicago was nothing more than jealous Hawkeye fans spreading the rumor to try to hurt ISU recruiting & to get rid of Hoiberg because we know we cant beat him...honest to God.

I asked what about the media reports then? ... "oh well when it comes to ISU the media treats them differently then they treat Iowa."...

Now that's funny.

Hoiberg's an NBA guy to the core. Not sure how anyone would think he wouldn't end up there if he had some success at Iowa State.

Every ISU fan I know knew he was gone months ago. You didn't have to look far to see he wanted the next level of coaching. I am happy for they guy. Wish he would have stayed but that's what he wanted right now.

BUT ISU was his dream job

BUT he was the mayor and had job security

BUT he was an idol in AMES; how could he leave?

BUT he would never leave before his kids graduated high school

BUT....well, it was all fantasy land

most ISU fans on here thought all of this as well...even if they don't admit it....

As a hawk fan, you are very happy that Fred left. You still have the same coach.

Wow. That party must have been for morons only.

Wow. That party must have been for morons only.
actually it was for a family member who just graduated from ISU and was headed to a new job out of state...and trust me the graduate could care less about athletics..ISU or IOWA.

I was indeed surprised everyone of the ISU fans were in denial...but these are the same people who live & breath their wins over us...I cant tell you how important the HyVee thing is to them...anytime we lose to anyone I get "hey how bout them Hawkeyes"...when we win....silence.

I'm sure there are plenty of Iowa fans that are the same way...but this small group...well it is not easy ignoring stupid.

Listening to a Hawkeye fan explain how ISU fans feel is like listening to a virgin explain sex.

Anybody who spent time with Cyclone fans in the past two or three weeks knows that most of us would have bet on Fred leaving. Was this the case when the rumors first surfaced? No. Because we'd heard the same thing before. But it pretty quickly became apparent that this time could be different. In view of Fred's silence and the comments by Jamie, you had to be pretty deep in denial not to reaize it was a serious possibility.

As for ISU being Fred's dream job......the truth is that he made that statement more than once. I'm pretty sure that at one point he said he'd retire there, but I could be wrong about that. However, he also said from the start that coaching in the NBA was the ultimate for anybody in his profession.

I am among those who expected him to be in Ames longer than he was.....until two or three weeks ago. It didn't seem that this was the time for him to go. He has a potentially great team coming back, he just got a contract extension, he has ultimate job security, and there's the family thing. Those factors aren't something that Cyclone fans fabricated; they are facts.

The timing still raises some questions, but apparently the Bulls situation is something he feels may not happen again.

The real truth is anyone who didn't know FH was an NBA guy wasn't paying attention and was deluding themselves. This scenario was already in the books when the rumor started swirling that TT was having problems with Bulls mgmt. That was the writing on the wall.
However, with some Hawk fans it is pretty obvious they are just butthurt that he was successful at ISU and for some that is just not acceptable. I hate the clowns with all of my soul, but to deny FH was not doing well is just flat out stupid. I for one am glad to see him go. He gets what he wants and we as Hawk fans get what we want: a yearly thorn out of our side.

Let's put the cr.p in bold so we look bigger. From what I observed and am now seeing, the hindsight perfection has become quite unanimous now that Hoiberg is indeed gone. But where was Mr. Black Sharpee in a coloring book even just last week?

And though this is just one example, I think it is fair to say that many Cyclone fans were in denial right up to the bitter end.

One of my best friends is what I consider, a pretty reasonable Cyclone fan, along with the rest of his family. When Thibs was fired, I asked him "On a scale of 1-10, how nervous are you?" His response, "200. Fred's gone."

Now I know that's there's a decent amount of Cyclone fans who lack any sense of objectivity, but we have those too. I think any somewhat knowledgeable Cyclone fan would've agreed with my friend at that same moment, and those who wouldn't were probably not paying attention, while a small segment were actually in denial. From the above, it sounds like some of the Cyclone fans you guys talked to just weren't paying attention.

Very well stated.

Absolutely. This is exactly the talk I heard all week leading up to Hoyburger's departure. Even the night before I had a guy say, "Just wait. When it is all said and done Fred will remain at ISU just wait and see. There is no frickin way he would ever move his family out of Ames." Haha the truth was he could not get them out fast enough.

I have 2 good friends who are big ISU supporters and they both assumed Fred was gone for several weeks now, even though they are huge Hoiberg fans. They actually felt that the Timberwolves might be in play if the Bulls offer was not enough to convince him.

I think I've been careful to say "most" when I wrote about ISU fan expectations, as well as to specify what time period I'm talking about. Did we have some fans who were certain he wouldn't leave? Hell, we have some who STILL think something will happen and he'll stay. We have some who are sure that Pollard drove Fred out of town. We have some that think if only we had raised his salary, he would have stayed.

For most of us, though, I think the combination of Jamie's remarks and the lack of any word from Fred swung us to believe the chances were better than even he'd leave.

the thing is ... the "small group" I was around are indeed morons...always have been. They actually thought I was putting Hoiberg down & ISU...they twisted it (as they always do) as somehow being related to Iowa fans being jealous of Hoiberg's success at ISU and in their brains the lack of success of McCaffery. This "little group" cannot be an example of ISU fans...god I hope not. It was amazing with what was coming out of their mouths'''....I try to avoid them when we get beat...its not pretty.

Regardless...coaches have to do what is best for them & their family..thats' what Hoiberg did. Wouldn't surprise me he is successful with the Bulls.

Good post. Too bad there are some insistent posters who saw not one shaky leg Cyclone. I'm sorry, but I saw some doing their best "Ghost and Mr. Chicken" Don Knotts impersonation. It must be frustrating for you, Lone Clone. You need answer for no one but yourself but so often it seems like you are the voice of reason in your flock. A kind of "Zeppo" amongst so many Marx Brothers. ;)

Agreed. Many ISU fans were in denial and living in a fantasy world. I wonder where they are living now?

Does anyone know why Lone Clone is on here and can anyone explain his 35,000 posts on here?

And now he presents an analogy comparing Iowa fans to virgins? Good grief; get over yourself, Clone. You are pompous and you need a new hobby and less posts on here.

I can't get past your first sentence where you state that Iowa fans don't know how ISU fans felt.

We ALL KNOW how ISU fans felt over the last 5 years. Iowa fans would say on here that Freddie was not going to be at ISU long term and what did we hear?

ISU was his dream job! Isn't your dream job a place where you would want to stay?

Fred was the mayor and had job security; he would NEVER leave that!

Fred was an idol in AMES; how could he leave?

Fred would never leave before his kids graduated high school.

Well, Clone, ALL of these ISU fans have been living in fantasy land. WE ALL KNOW HOW ISU FANS FELT. And that's the POINT of this thread. This thread is not covering the LAST TWO WEEKS even though that's the way YOU want to STEER THINGS; it's covering the 5 years when Fred was at ISU.

Again, please take your pompous and condescending attitude somewhere where it is wanted.

I wish ISU nothing but the worst moving forward. =).

Again, the point of the thread covers the last 5 years, not the last 2 weeks when it became clear Fred was heading to the Bulls.

Just watch the first video I posted (in orig post); in Fred's free time he was watching NBA games, not college games.

agreed! but hey, Clone is here comparing us to virgins! Good grief.

Just don't get caught canoeing on Lizard Creek or the Boone River by any Cyclone fans playing banjos or you might hear something worse! And that's only the start of the troubles.

FH was afraid the other young good looking blonde guy that was running for mayor of
the NBA.....Steve Kerr. Hoiberg will be measured or bench marked against Kerr's success of his Warriors; that being making the final two in the NBA. FH's record at ISU no longer matters to his legacy, the only coaching legacy that now matters is making the finals in the NBA.

If Tbone, aka OnceAhawk isn't the biggest bitch on the internet then I wouldn't wanna know who is.

This guy is one of the most pathetic zeroes ever seen on these boards.

However, I do agree with OnceaHawk's take on LoneClone - I've never understood his apparent infatuation with Hawkeye sites. He must be a closet Iowa fan:) Hate is a strong word, but let's just stay I too strongly dislike anything related to the ISWho Clowns and anything that weakens their programs is good for the Hawks.

Well IMO Cyclone fans with a brain knew from the start that Fred was a NBA guy and would eventually end up there. I include LC in this group even though he has largely turned his brain to mush through right-wing politics. It was always just a matter of Fred finding the right opportunity and apparently the Bulls job is that opportunity.

Its a zero sum game, bad for the Clowns is inherently good for the Hawks. That Murray St. kid can coach but he may not have the latitude to bring the caravan of free agents into Cowtown.
That would make a lot of difference on the Clowns ability to recruit.

Hoiberg did a great job in Cowtown and I am very happy he is gone.

That's what I've been saying. I was surprised it happened this year. I was not surprised he wanted to end up in the NBA.
