ISU Head Coach Matt Campbell wins Big XII head coach of the year.

Who the Hell is Chuck Neinas? Is he the Drummer for the Nada's?
Damn. you beat me too it! I mean, no wonder the big 12 has an inferiority complex. The BIG award is the Hayes/Schembechler award right. Named after legendary coaches. The big 12 is named after Joe whats his name. How fitting is that.......

Haha on Byron Hanspard for Academic excellence! Not everyone remembers what a great scholar he was.

I had to look it up too. Former commissioner of the Big 8. Solid choice for your coach of the year award name. The Big XII Academic excellence award is the Byron Hanspard award.

This actually is worth a raised eyebrow. The award almost always goes to the coach of the conference champion, occasionally the runnerup. I didn't know they named it for Neinas. Bizarre. He was a good commissioner, but naming COY award for him?

If you had made me guess, I would have guessed Bud Wilkinson.

Or Van Phillips...lol...for his undefeated season. Joanne Johnson/Fisher is my first cousin, think she was in your class.

Given the train wreck that ISU usually is, Campbell did an impressive job especially with the QBs that got hurt. I would say this award is based on the wins over Oklahoma and TCU, the two teams that will play for the conference championship. An impressive season for Iowa State.

When your team is basically Purdue, a coach who gets to 7 wins should expect some hardware.

I don't follow Big 12 COY's. But your comment surprises me. When I think COY I think of a guy whose team surprised people with their success.

Congratulations to Matt Campbell and the Cyclone for what he did with a doormat of the Big 12 in only his second year is nothing short of remarkable. He has come in and changed the culture in a short amount of time.

Not to mention he started three different QB's in conference play. Not many teams finish with a winning record when that happens.

It's more than wins (or it should be IMO).

The games I watched they just struck me as a very well coached team. Had some talent, but not a a ton and got every inch out of the guys they had.

It should be, but it hasn't been that way historically. In the 22 years the Big XII has existed, this is the first time COY has gone to a coach whose team didn't at least tie for a division title, and in 19 of those 22 years it went to a champion. For example, Mac won it in 2004 when ISU tied for the North Division title. This is pretty standard; the BiG history is very similar.

Totally understand why Campbell got it, but you could sure make an argument for the new dude at OU (too lazy to look it up). Major pressure and playing for the conference and maybe national championship? I realize the cupboard wasn't exactly empty and it is OU, but still.
Nice to see any hardware make it's way in to the state though!

You still can be a surprise and be first or second in your division / conference. Your example is more than proof of that.

Sort of surprised they didn't figure out a way to give to it the media's latest wet-dream, Baker Mayfield.

He has done a great job but what does it say when 7-5 gets you COY?

This is obviously a biased opinion, but I think its more impressive than the 7-5 record indicates. Iowa State was competitive in every game. The 10 point loss to Texas was their worst loss, and even that one felt like a missed opportunity. As an ISU fan, I've seen some 7-5 or 6-6 type seasons where you knew they were just a mediocre team. The year of the Seneca Wallace comeback was one such year. A miracle, and to be frank, a lucky, comeback against Iowa. Doors blown off by Oklahoma, etc. But this did not look or play like a mediocre team. This looked like a team that was unlucky to have 5 losses and it looks like a program, to me at least (and again, I'm a homer) on the upswing, and not at its pinnacle.

Given ISU's 2 big wins and how tough they were against everybody else ... the honor is well-deserved. Other teams overlooked the cyclones at their own peril.

I think that the argument against the new guy at OU is that he had Baker Mayfield at the helm and the Big 12 had a "relatively" down year this year. Thus, OU landed about where most folks would have expected.

I didn't mean to suggest it wasn't deserved. I just noted that deserved or not, it's highly unusual for a coach to win this honor without winning the league (or a division if that's the situation).

You didn't respond to my post. They should have named the award after Van Phillips, for his 1963 undefeated season.

Still well deserved though. I mean what other team exceeded expectations better the ISU this year in the 12? No one would have picked them to beat OK on the road, or TCU at home. Didn't they still have a shot at the championship with a couple of weeks to go? The one they've never won in their history. I would think he would have won it hands down.

Ya agree, if Nebrasksa hadn't left for B1G, perhaps would have a worthier name such as Wilkinson/Devaney or Wilkinson/Osborne.

You apparently did not watch the game this year. Iowa should of lost and relied on some crazy stuff happening to bail them out.
