There are two Hawkeyes news stories that will drop almost simultaneously, at least within days of one another.

One will make the majority of this board extremely happy. The other, an incredible tragedy.

I pray, especially concerning the latter, that this board, and fans of other teams who troll incessantly, act like empathetic adults. Take care.

I was wondering when someone would post the 2nd. It's not something anyone is thinking, I can guarantee that. I've known about that one since Monday. Really, really sad story.

Out of curiosity did an internet search. Hope to God what I saw isn't true. I do find it interesting that the date quoted is 5/22. I don't see any way that could have been kept secret for 4 days.

It’s been floating around for a few days. Maybe names are being withheld because a minor was at the wheel at the time of the accident? Not sure how that works in Iowa

Patrick and Connor have not tweeted since 5/23 and they are usually pretty regular. Adam Jacobi is saying it has not happened. Hope he is right.

KCRG site has it listed at 5/23 at about 4pm. No details beyond this.

Edit...sorry....the video/story was UPDATED on 5/23...the accident was on the 22nd. My apologies

I can’t endorse this last paragraph enough. I’m proud of the professional and compassionate manner in which the board is acting so far.

Please keep it up the light of this tragic incident.

I don't live anywhere near there, but I have a friend who does. He says it is not correct. He says he knows the kid who was killed and his name was Jack, but that it was not McCaffrey.

God I hope you are correct.

This was also posed on the Iowa City Reddit site by a parent:

My child was behind the McCaffery boy on way home from the HS. Right lane female driver yielded to pedestrian and he began to cross. Left lane driver did not see pedestrian and struck him. My child came home today (Thursday, 3 days since accident) from school and said she had heard that the pedestrian that was in the ICU passed away either last night or today. Not confirmed by any news sources or those close to those involved.

Jack was the driver of the vehicle, not the victim.
This seems to be a horrible and terrible accident, nothing I have heard has indicated Jack was driving recklessly or in an unsafe manner. It was a pedestrian who came from a blind spot and Jack could not stop in time.

He now says that Jack McC was the driver, hit an older gentleman whose name is being with held and who is apparently brain dead. My friend has now updated his story a couple times, so I would take it with a grain of salt, but that is the latest he has heard and he is connected with the medical community. Just sounds tragic all the way around.

Wow. I hope this isn't true as this is really sad n

Yeah, this kind of went off course a little bit. It was never intimated by me that Jack was killed. All I’ve heard was that there was a tragic accident, and a teen driver was behind the wheel. And yes since it’s out there, Jack was the one mentioned being behind the wheel at the time of the accident.

Nothing has been confirmed as of yet. That’s why I was hesitant in naming names.

Was Jack alone in the car? Does Iowa require an adult to be in the car with a minor driving on a permit? Or can he drive just to school and work alone? Just assuming he's not old enough to have a full drivers license. Really sad and unfortunate regardless. T&P for both the victim, and the Mac family.....

Good question. I believe there was an adult in the car with him but that hasn’t been confirmed either

I asked because I don't know what the law is in Iowa now. Haven't lived there since 86. In some states he'd still be on a permit or restricted license, good only to school or work ,and not allowed to drive other minors without an adult present, and 16 is not an adult....

I did not turn 16 until two months after I completed my sophomore year.

They have these things called "birthdays" and "months".
My birthday just so happens to be in late July.

When you turned 16 is interesting, but not relevant.

100% relevant given you mentioned "there is no way he is not 16 yet"

My birthday is also in July. I was 15 when I finished sophomore year. So, it is 100% possible.

Many of our kids are driving at 14 in the ICCSD with the school permit. The rule states that you must drive straight to school or school related event. No delaying your route.

I have no idea how that rule applies to students who open enroll at other schools. Maybe it is possible that a parent/adult was in the car with him?

I just feel awful for everyone involved. This is such a crappy situation.

By the way, the man who was hit was a Sargent First Class in the military.

I never said it wasn’t possible for some people…but the McCafferys have all started school late and have been old for their class.
