Evidently, we are all to just assume things. My bad.I never said it wasn’t possible for some people…but the McCafferys have all started school late and have been old for their class.

I'll just say this, and just IMHO. 14 is way, way to young to be driving, especially unattended by an adult. I'll include my own 16yr old grand daughter who has her permit, and is a fantastic young lady, but there is NO way I would have wanted her operating a motor vehicle at 14 yrs old. And yes I live in a farming community and many of our friends have kids who drive farm equipment, and they drive the families pickups around the area. One of them just got in a pretty bad accident last summer. Was not his fault, but kids that age, don't have the knowledge of other people and how to react.Many of our kids are driving at 14 in the ICCSD with the school permit. The rule states that you must drive straight to school or school related event. No delaying your route.
I have no idea how that rule applies to students who open enroll at other schools. Maybe it is possible that a parent/adult was in the car with him?
I just feel awful for everyone involved. This is such a crappy situation.
By the way, the man who was hit was a Sargent First Class in the military.

Another big issue is most school districts, (here anyway) no longer offer or require drivers education in school. Horrible idea. We had at least a semester of classroom study with tests, simulator driving, driving range, and on the streets and hiway instruction, and you had to pass the course. We're now in at least the second generation of kids, (their parents didn't have formal training either), that have had NO formal instruction, being taught "supposedly" by parents who never had formal training either. Another reason there are so many dumb asses on the roads. People don't communicate with signals, and don't know how to react and deal with other drivers. Not to mention the distraction of cell phones in the car, which should be rendered inoperable while the car is in motion.

Believe me, my comment about drivers training, (or the lack of it) was not intended as a statement about this event, but on the current readiness of our future drivers to be safe operators on our roads. Between that and their inability to shut off social media and devices while doing so, is I think a real issue.There is still required driving time and classroom training. Just happens outside school now.
I’m 40 and had that in school drivers ed and I was a terrible driver when I finished. What we are talking about is likely terrible luck.
There are two Hawkeyes news stories that will drop almost simultaneously, at least within days of one another.
One will make the majority of this board extremely happy. The other, an incredible tragedy.
I pray, especially concerning the latter, that this board, and fans of other teams who troll incessantly, act like empathetic adults. Take care.
Did any local news outlet (the Gazette, Press Citizen) even report the accident? A minor involved would not be named but you'd think there would be a story on the person getting hit, with info on:
* time, day it happened
* what the victim was doing - walking in cross walk, jogging, etc
* where it happened
* what the police are saying in regards to their investigation of the accident
* etc

FIFY.Not many people are good drivers, although most believe that they are. Tragic. The death should be the bigger story, even if a Mac was driving. Has it been officially confirmed that Jack was the driver?
