Those words came out of Lute Olson's mouth.

In 1982.

He wasn't suspended, by the way.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa Coach Lute Olson, loudly complaining about college basketball officiating, takes his team to Logan, Utah, later this week in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament.

The Hawkeyes face Northeast Louisiana, 19-10, Friday.

The Indians, members of the Trans-America Athletic Conference, earned a bid Saturday night with a 98-95 victory over Centenary.

But Olson still is upset with the officiating during the Iowa-Purdue game Saturday at West Lafeyette, Ind.

With the Hawkeyes and Purdue tied at 65-65 and no time showing on the clock, official Jim Bain whistled forward Kevin Boyle for a foul on Purdue's Dan Palombizio.

Palombizio sank a free throw to give his team the 66-65 upset and hand Iowa its fifth loss in its last seven games. The Hawks lost any hope of sharing the Big Ten title with the defeat. Minnesota clinched the outright championship by beating Ohio State.

Iowa ended its season in second place in the Big Ten with a 12-6 league record, 12-6 overall.

After the Purdue game, Olson charged onto the court seconds after the game to confront Bain, but the official rushed off. In a post-game news conference, Olson said Bain stole the game from the Hawkeyes. He said the game's officials 'deserve to be in jail.'

'You can chalk this one up to Bain and his crew,' said the angry Olson. 'It's an absolute disgrace for people to steal basketball games from players this way. When officials don't see the call they should not make it.'

Olson said television replays showed Boyle to be eight feet away from Palombizio when the foul call was made. He also said senior guard Kenny Arnold 'was absolutely hammered, yet there was no guts on anyone's part to make the call.'

Big Ten officials apparently were listening to Olson's gripes. Commissioner Wayne Duke said Sunday the conference will review the game and requested Olson to bring film and tapes of the controversial finish into the league office.

Duke said his decision to call in game films was 'an extension of but in accordance with' normal league practice of allowing coaches to send their own complaints about officiating to the league office.

Duke also said a league review of its officiating procedures had been underway long before Olson called Saturday for a complete shakeup.

Apples and oranges.

Lute didn’t have a red faced reputation and wasn’t on a short leash.

And Lute was a god around here.
Lute Olson wasn't around when there was social media, either.

You actually think that some of Lute's antics would not have gone viral on Twitter?

When he chased Jim Bain, you don't think that would have gone viral?

Lute calling the officials thieves and saying they deserve to be in jail; would that have gone viral?

Would Lute have been fined & suspended by the B1G if he had done & said those things today? Of course he would have.

Often it is how and when you express ideas that count as much or more than the idea itself. Olson did not run after Bain using threatening language. In addition, Bain may have cost us that game versus a 20 point beat down.

Olson could be arrogant and defensive but usually remained cool. McCaffery: not so much. The reason to like Lute is that Bobby Knight hated him.

it hasn't worked for you...

nice job comparing apples to grapefruit. Fran got what he deserved, let it go. And yes, we live in a much different time and place now compared to what was acceptable nearly 40 years ago. I'm sorry you can't seem to comprehend that.
apples to grapefruit?

I am not sorry to say that you obviously can't comprehend any of this.

"Threating language"

Calling someone a Cheating MotherEffer is not threatening them. Saying "I'm going to kill you, you cheating mothereffer" is.

Different ADs and different times.

Barta’s department is under a microscope these days and every time one of his head coaches farts in public he feels obligated to do a rectal exam, usually at a press conference. Self inflicted ‘roids.

I well remember that. After that, and I don't remember how long after, the Big Ten made a rule that coaches couldn't complain about officials, and that is why coaches in the pressers after games often say "you know I can't say anything."

Did Lute chase Bain (or any of his crew) down the tunnel and verbally assault them in front of members of the media?

I think that’s a fairly big difference between the two incidents. Along with the fact Bain’s call actually cost us the game and a chance at the conf title.

At the end of the day, Fran needs to take his Technical(s), when it’s obvious he is wanting it, and just move on.

Also.... #firebarta

I was only 7 years old at the time and I still remember that call. Boyle was 4 feet away from the Boilermaker. Easily the worst call I've ever seen go against Iowa. I'm confident in saying Bobby Knight would have physically assaulted Bain if that were to happen to Indiana during his days in Bloomington.

Hell no. If it was social media driven old Izzy would be all over it. Why cannot people see their hateful bias.

Actually Lute had to be restained from getting his hands on Bain, or he may have done way worse then yell profanity at him. What do you suppose Fran's punishment would have been had he actually laid hands on the ref?:confused:

Comparing an incident from 37 years ago to one a few days ago? Seems reasonable.
Interesting that you can't seem to follow along.

I am simply pointing out that coaches and fans have not changed much since 1982.

And guess what? Iowa fans made death threats towards Jim Bain (see Tweet from Scott Dochtermann at the end of this post).

Similarly, when Kentucky lost a game in 2017 to North Carolina, the Kentucky fans threatened referee John Higgins. LINK: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...-referee-lawsuit-says/?utm_term=.7050b20a2851

Oh I follow just fine. Quit trying to justify Fran’s behavior. The world has changed a bit since 1982.

Here's an article from 1985 where Jim Bain sued two Iowa fans and won:

UPI ARCHIVES

MARCH 28, 1985
Big Ten referee wins lawsuit against Iowa fans

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Big Ten referee Jim Bain, who said his reputation was injured when two Iowa Hawkeye fans sold T-shirts depicting him with a rope around his neck, was awarded $12,230 in damages Thursday from two fans.

The jury ruled that John and Karen Gillispie of Iowa City placed Bain in a false light, invaded his privacy and profited off his likeness when they issued the 'Jim Bain Fan Club' T-shirts.

The shirts were manufactured shortly after Bain made a controversial foul call in a 1982 basketball game between Iowa and Purdue. The call allowed Purdue to make a free throw and win the game.

The jury awarded Bain $1,000 for invasion of privacy, $5,000 for emotional distress and $5,000 punitive damages. He also was awarded $1,230 for a $3 share of each of the 410 shirts the Gillispie's claim to have sold.

However, the jury rejected Bain's claim for libel damages.

The verdict, reached after a day and a half of deliberations, supported Bain's claim that his foul call did not make him a public figure open to public criticism.

'The public recognizes that decision makers need protection so they can continue to do the difficult job of making difficult decisions,' said Bain's lawyer David Dutton.

'I think it indicates there is a line that can be drawn between what we consider to be appropriate criticism of an official's call and statements or conduct which advocate violence.'

Bain and Big Ten officials refused comment on the award. An attorney for the Gillispies said no decision has been made whether to appeal the verdict.

'We're obviously disappointed but we thought the jury worked long and hard,' attorney Jay Honahan said.

The T-shirts were prompted by the final seconds of the March 6, 1982 Iowa-Purdue game when Bain called a foul on Hawkeye forward Kevin Boyle with the score tied at 65 and no time left on the clock.

Videotapes showed Boyle a dozen feet from the action. Bain testified during the court proceedings last week that the foul should have been called on Iowa center Greg Stokes.

The foul call sent Purdue's Dan Palombizio to the free throw line where he hit the first free throw to give Purdue a 66-65 win and knock Iowa out of the Big Ten championship race.

Dutton, an Iowa alumnus and longtime Hawkeye fan, remembers watching the game. He said he was disappointed when his client called the foul that led to the Purdue victory.

'We were disappointed and confused too,' Dutton said. 'But not necessarily at the officiating.'

90-days in county at least.

Ya, when you had da success Lute had (i.e. Final 4), you get a little more credibility/latitude. Benefit of da doubt, benefit of da doubt. :)

PS - I'm shocked at all da complaints about officiating after getting rolled by 20! I presume this will a stop hawkeye fans from complaining about cyclone fans when a they have officiating concerns. Or probably not. :)
I think you are looking for 'Ja,' not 'Ya.' 'Ja' is Germanic for 'yes' while 'Ya' is a lazy, Klown-like way of saying 'you.' 'Ya' does, however, does serve to identify you as someone who seeks attention by being annoying. You, in essence, are a 5-year-old Klown.

I think you have proven otherwise.

I’m not wasting my time with you. Your bias is pretty clear. Comparing an incident from 1982 to something in 2019 doesn’t hold water. The world has changed. If you don’t understand that I can’t help you. Have a lovely day Fran.
