It's been 30 years since Iowa had a deep run, we are overdue

The OP sounds a lot like one of my badger friends with his backhanded words of encouragement.

I got the same basic comment from another school supporter....(you can figure the school out)...sort of like ...enjoy it while it lasts .. referencing of course we lose 4 seniors. He looked funny when I said not taking this year for granted but this year isn't over either. And looking forward to next year...next year.

There may be a slight dip next year but with Cook and the Iowa kids coming in over the next few years I think we'll have plenty of chances for deep runs coming up. We're finally back to the baseline Dr. Tom had set where we expect to make the tournament nearly every year, only with a much higher ceiling now.

I remember going to the Field House in the middle of the night with maybe 10,000 other Hawk fans to welcome back Lute's final four team, after a remarkable win against a Georgetown team that was supposed to whip Iowa. For me, the second half of the Georgetown game was the best example of an Iowa team playing almost perfect TEAM basketball. This team has a lot of similarities, with players who understand their roles and go out and perform. The final four run was done with Ronnie Lester playing on 1.5 legs, so it isn't like they were that much more talented. Something like that is what Iowa needs to bring the student fan base back to where it was then. It is a realistic possibility!

This isn't about next year. Carpe diem.

A formidable 5 - 4 seniors (3 of them top100 recruits) and an NBA junior don't come along very often for Iowa. I agree we'll be good in the coming years. Just not as good as this team.

Final 4 can be done. And elite 8 seems like a baseline. With the awesome FBall year we just had this will be a fall and spring to remember for a generation. Possibly longer.

Did you reads Hawks127 thread? Basically the same thing. You might want to reinterpret.
Oh really?

"This senior-laden team may be our last chance for decades."

Sounds pretty damn smarmy to me; I don't think a legit Hawkeye fan would phrase it that way.

There's more than one way to build a good team. I certainly don't think Jok is a guaranteed draft pick yet and while Clemmons, Woody and Gesell all have been very solid, none of those guys are once in a generation type guys. Uthoff is having a great year, but he will be the third in a string of 1st team All B10 selections under Fran. It wouldn't surprise me at all if a team built around someone like Cook is contending for a B10 title and number one seed in four years. This year is only going to help recruiting going forward too. The one unique thing about this year is how totally wide open the field is, can't remember a year with more parity at the top.

I guess sweet 16 woulda been Tom's last year. But IMO elite 8 is deep. That seems a must for this team's legacy.

You are setting yourself up for a massive disappointment if you think this team has to achieve elite 8. I'm hopeful they do, and I'm hopeful they go even further... but if you want to be honest about it, by the time you get to the second round, just about anything is possible in the NCAA tourney. Every year there are at least 2-3 teams in the elite 8 that don't belong there on paper.

Go Hawks, I hope you are right... but you can't set baselines like that in my opinion.

I consider it a great compliment that now Iowa is supposed to finish in the Elite Eight at a minimum to secure their "legacy". Crazy freaking fans in my opinion, but a compliment nonetheless.

I can imagine this scenario. At the Alamo, with dead and dying all about and there is Davey Crockett out of ammo and swinging his gun like a club. Thousands of Santa Anna's men descending on him. And out of the blue, clear as a bell, someone yells, "You got this Davey!!!" o_O

At some point, can't we just appreciate what the team has done so far!?!?!?

did some looking ahead to next season when these as freshmen join the team and it looks like this

PG 6'1 Bohanon 4* by ESPN
SG 6'5 Moss 4* by ESPN
SF 6'6 Hutton 4* by 247
PF 6'9 Cook 4* TOP 50 BY ESPN
C 6'10 Kriener NR by ESPN
F 6'8 Pemsyl 3* by ESPN,
class without the 2 RS's is rated 29th by ESPN.

that's better than the class that had Gesell, Clemmons and Woodbury TALENT wise if you use the star's to determine how good they are.

2012
PG 6'2 Gesell 4* top 100 by ESPN
CG 6'2 Clemmons 2* by ESPN
SG 6'4 Ingram 3* by ESPN {LEFT}
F/C 6'10 Meier 3* by ESPN {LEFT}
C 7'1 Woodbury top 50 by ESPN
Class was rated 25th by ESPN

it will not take decades to repeat what they are doing this season, just look at how Baer responded to a RS year, even Brady was helped, just think about how Moss and Hutton will be after their turn RS'ing.

personally I hope that at least Pemsyl RS's and maybe Bohanon, that would make the 2017 class at least 3 maybe 4 depending on if Jones gets a medical hardship for a 6th year.

I am not expecting anybody to transfer out, there will be 4 players leaving and plenty of playing time to go around, these players know their roles and play accordingly, none of these players were the go to guy on their team. so they know how to be role players.

just look at Duke, Kentucky they have to many me 1st players and it is hurting them, getting a top 50 player that fit into a team oriented environment can really help and if you have overlooked player or a few 4* players that will work just as well.

No, what's hurting them is they've been so freakin' good that all their guys turn pro and they have a team of freshmans. If getting too many "me 1st players" wins me a national championship or multiple final 4 appearances, then please, sign me up for the "I want me 1st players".

Uthoff might be a once in a generation player. He's not just a great offensive player, the advance metrics have him as one of the best defensive players. These types of guys don't come around very often to a school like Iowa. Jok is an excellent shooter. Clemmons, Woody, and Gesell are very solid on both ends of the court. You also can't downplay the senior experience/leadership factor. We saw these players weren't as mentally tough their first 3 years, but they've stepped it up big time this year.

Incoming recruits are always the shiny new toy that we tend to overhype. MG was going to be the 2nd coming of John Stockton at PG, and Woody was going to be the next great big man, scoring 20 pts a game. Hey, they are both good players and I'm glad they are Hawks, but if you looked back at the comments when they were seniors in high school and they were similar to what you are saying about Cook.

You are correct there are more than one way to build a good team, but for Iowa it's going to rely on Fran bringing in good players, developing them, and most importantly, retaining them. Iowa is not going to be bringing in very many top 50 ranked recruits. Look at the success Bo Ryan had at Wis, and he never brought in very many top 50 guys. He had the same problems Iowa faces, small state, small population. Bo won because he brought in solid players that were good fits for his system, he developed the talent, and then he kept them. It provided continuity, and the young players learned from the older players. Fran will follow the Bo model, not the Matta or Izzo model.

I thought you were better than that. It's been 30 years since we had a deep run. Now you're expecting deep runs on a regular basis? Don't get mad at me because reality disagrees with your fantasies. If you think being a real Hawkeye means lying about the truth, sorry, that's an insult suggesting Iowa and its fans don't have integrity.

I think your suggestion that if we don't get it done this year it will be several decades before we get another shot is the insult.

Funny there are all these expectations on the team and the fans can't even fill out the building. I guess for me the team is FAR outperforming the fans in terms of expectations.

I hope you're right. But isn't a deep run more important than a Big Ten title?

This is a point I've been trying to make here the last couple weeks. So many of our fans are wrapped up in how we win the B1G title just assuming a deep tourney run comes hand in hand. To an extent, they may be correlated as we'd have a better seed and likely be in DSM... but don't view this like ISU fans who brag about winning the B12 tourney and then, well, lose to UAB. And yes, I know most of our fans are talking regular season B1G title which hasn't happened in a long time.

In order of importance imo:

National Championship
Final Four
Regular Season Conference Championship
Elite Eight
Sweet Sixteen
Conference Tournament Championship
Round of 32
NIT Championship
Making it to the Dance

That's a nice thought but next year's team won't be filled with seniors who were highly recruited. Jok and Cook will keep hopes high, so you may be right. But the mantra of "next year" is getting old after 30 years.

Now this is what a reasonable post looks like. I think they'll earn it this year.

If You say what Frantastic posted is a reasonable post then why did you put we are due in your thread title? funny guy, and yes what PFrantastic posted is absolutely spot on, No one is due anything in life, go out and earn it.
