I've Seen This Iowa State/Iowa Movie Before...

Iowa State looks like garbage vs whoever they face before Iowa. Iowa State can't block, can't tackle, turns the ball over, commits dumb penalties, etc....

They then come to Iowa City and commit zero turnovers, one or zero penalties, has their best rushing game of the year. You get the picture. This is a movie we've all seen too many times.

Stop stealing my line.

But really tho........we've seen this movie before.

Iowa State is not good. We're worse if we lose to them. I also hate their school. A lot of Iowa youth have been hoodwinked into believing the myth that ISU is somehow elite as a school. Their big claim is engineering and they rate middle-of-the-pack (slightly ahead of Iowa). And it's their dumb students/alumnae who are doing the bragging. Not their smart students. ISU has become a landmark for Iowan complacency.

I agree. I really do think the Hawks will win comfortably, but I'm not going to go around and thump my chest and talk trash to ISU fans all week like some of the Iowa fans I know. Anything can happen in this game and we saw firsthand yesterday that one hit/ejection can make a difference.

I'm going to let every clown I see know they are in for an ass beating next week. Don't care.

I really would be surprised if the game isn't something like 52-16 Iowa.

ISU's lines got dominated by UNI last night. UNI is about as one dimensional as it gets on offense, and still moved the ball methodically. Then, ISU barely ran for 50 yards themselves.

If this were Campbell's 2nd or 3rd year into his rebuild, I would be tempted to believe they'd recover. But it isn't, and this time the ISU cupboard's bare except for their receivers and secondary. Their lines are borderline terrible.

Blowout City unless Iowa comes in fat-catting it. Which I don't see happening. Not with this current crop of Iowa players and coaches.

Yeah, this could be an ol' fashioned Hayden Fry OOC game beat down.

You know, where you call off the dogs but still keep scoring.

I get the whole bit of "we've seen this movie before" and while its true its usually an indication of the rest of the season. If Iowa is going to win 9-10 games they will beat ISU, if Iowa loses expect more of the 6-8 range. NO excuse that Iowa should lose this coming Saturday and if they did its going to be coaching issues!

After reading the reactions last nite, as hard as it is to believe, many fans think this team is much worse than anything Rhoads ever had. They are already sick of the Campbell hype. They were pretty critical of his sideline reactions and the fan base is counting down to the MBB season.

Too bad, so sad.

Just a hunch, but I'm guessing because the Iowa players and coaches have seen this movie before too they will come prepared and take nothing for granted.

This week the theme is: "Not in our house." It is constantly reiterated with the team that they have lost twice at Kinnick to a bottom feeder P5 team.

Improvements get made on defense. Vanilla schemes get upgraded a touch.

Iowa wins by +20.

I don't think you have. There have been a couple of times when ISU looked horrendous in losing to a weak team, then beat Iowa, but those Iowa teams weren't as good as this one.....and I am not sure those ISU teams were as bad as this one looked last night.

Everything from coaching to special teams execution had major breakdowns. I think most ISU fans knew the OL was going to be a problem, and then Campos got hurt, and then a starter (Good-Jones) was suspended. They did a decent job on pass protection, but were offal when it came to opening holes for runs. Cyclones averaged 2 yards per carry...and on the three or four occasions when they broke a nice run, it was called back for a hold or illegal block.

Despite all that, they should have won....they had the lead, the momentum and a first down on UNI's side of the field with about 6 minutes to play. You have to really work to lose in that situation, and they did.

With all due respect to UNI, that was the most winnable game on the ISU schedule.

I agree with everything, except that our style will not allow for a good ol fashioned Hayden beat down. We'll get out ahead comfortably, change to three yards and a cloud of recycled tire particles offense, Iowa State will score a couple garbage touchdowns to make it a 2 score game, but it will never really be in doubt.

Yep, and I remember reading tweets last year from Bama fans after the Ole Miss loss that it was time for Nick Saban to go. Reactionary tweets and posts from fans are just part of the deal--they don't mean much.

I don't think the players and coaches are going to limp into Kinnick demoralized. As the OP pointed out, the last movie had a shocking twist. With that said, I think the 2016 production will look quite a bit different.

Oh, and after losing to UNI, this year I am buying the mythical Iowa State Super Bowl. I just don't think in the end it will matter. Iowa will come prepared and be a better team than the Week 1 version of the 2016 Hawkeyes.

Not sure ISU should have won Lone Clone as they were out gained 367 to 307 yards and ran for a measly 50 yards. With that said I expect ISU to play better next week and I feel they are a vastly superior team to Miami. I expect a tough game.

ISU rope-a-dope. They are trying to sucker the Hawkeyes into a lull.

Nah, the Clones really suck this year and Iowa should lay a beating on them. This Saturday, though, is truly a Clone Super Bowl. Beat Iowa and all this bad stuff goes away, the season is a success, and the fans will be happy.

Knute Lombardi Campbell had a date with reality last night. Reality, rather than giving him a sweet kiss goodnight or better along the odiferous Skunk River, gave him a well deserved swift kick to the testicles. He, who unblushingly claims 10 national championships and magical ability to brew a storm of football success, was exposed as not being ready for prime time. Worse, he gave no indication that he will ever be. Pitiful. Another nice hire, Polly!

The good news for Knute is that he may have a career in infomercials. He does know how to hype product that is less, much less, than above reproach. If you don't believe me, just read the Fish Wrapper, "Iowa Depends On" ace science fiction writer, Randy Peterson.

The other good news is their "dark horse" Heisman hopeful, might, just might, be back next year.

I expect KLC's next date with Reality, just west of the sweetly flowing Iowa River, even though he will be escorted by the very estimable "Three Pillars!!!," may be a hot-fiery hellscape on steroids for him.

The line about Randy Peterson admittedly gave me a chuckle. I read his columns all the time for its entertainment value. Science fiction is pretty close to the mark.

I also think he graduated with honors from the Dan McCarney School of Spin. I.e. "Once again Iowa State is one of the bowl champions of America." If I recall correctly, Mac said that after Iowa State's thrilling 17-13 Independence Bowl win over Miami (OH)--their 2nd bowl win in school history.

Maybe I didn't phrase that properly. Yes, UNI deserved to win the game. But as I stated, ISU should have won it, based on the position late in the fourth quarter. They had the lead, the momentum, and a first down on UNI's side of the field. AT THAT POINT, they shouldn't have lost the game.

Based on the stats, etc., UNI should not have been behind then. But it was.

I also expect ISU to play better in the future, including next week. They have some good skill position players. Lanning made some really brain-dead errors, but he also threw some excellent passes. The receivers looked as good as expected. The running backs, when they got the chance, showed up well. The DBs were expected to be the strongest part of the team, and did nothing to alter that perception.

The defense suffered last night when they lost a veteran linebacker -- a lot of freshmen were playing. Bailey is a very good scrambling quarterback.

Some of the mistakes unquestionably were due to the fact that it was the first game for a new staff and for 41 players. But some of the veterans made inexcusable errors, too.

I can't see them winning Saturday unless Iowa plays the way ISU played last night, which isn't going to happen. Cyclones could be respectable, (IMHO, which is truly H in this case) if they accentuate the passing game, but quite honestly, at this point I think Iowa will cover the spread.....and I don't even know what the spread will be.

Could it be that Lanning is a Tommy Armstrong clone? Looks good for a little while, then makes terrible decision resulting in a pick. Could see a game plan similar to Nebraska last year. The wild card is that Lazard is good. Need to bracket him to avoid giving up 25+ yard chunks of yardage.

LC: Billy Mays has, yet another, set of steak knives for you. And, despite the others sets, that would not cut gravy, you and Polly have purchased, these will really-really work!

Pollard and Campbell's problem is that they hyped this season. Now the fans expected a better product. That's not the case. Campbell just needs to survive the season with his decent recruiting class in order.

Except they had a lot of their better recruits at last nite's game. What do you think they thought after seeing the latest episode of "ShitStorm Weekly"? My only question is which REAL D-1 program will MC be the OC for in 3 years?

At what point, if ever, does Pollard pay the price for his horrid football hires?

Ya, that's why I said survive the season with these recruits in tact. I know that 4-star committed to ISU for playing time. I'm sure he solidified his commitment with what he saw last night.

You continue to make no sense whatever. I suggest trying English. As nearly as I can tell, you think it is unrealistic of me to think ISU will fail to cover the spread against Iowa. I would be interested in learning why you think this is the case. I need to hear something positive.

Pretty sure the Billy Mays reference was implying you're a little gullible and a bit too optimistic where the clones are concerned.

I'm thinking Iowa is gonna roll this year. Miami probably would've trounced the clones yesterday. The game has to be played, but I truly hope the Hawkeyes come in and step on their collective necks early and spend the rest of the game stomping on them like they're making wine out of grapes.

That's what I would have thought, if my post had been optimistic. Since it was precisely the opposite, his comments made no sense.

Some people really struggle with reading comprehension on these boards.

In terms of Iowa State, as I've stated plenty of times before, the jury will be out on Campbell for at least a couple years. Anyone expecting miracles this season is indeed a candidate for an amazing infomercial. The only thing anyone can gain from last night's game vs. UNI is that Iowa State football is still a work in progress.

The question will be is Matt Campbell the guy to turn the program and culture around? I can honestly say I don't know. There was this promising young basketball coach several years ago in the Missouri Valley who was a star in the 1980s at Indiana that I once thought was going to be the next Lute Olsen at Iowa.

You just never know.

Yeah....I think they have a preconception of what they're going to read, and think that's what was written, whether it was or not.

It's 'way too early to call for Campbell's head. Just as it would have been 'way too early to anoint him as the savior if the Clones had won by 30. Some fans thought there would be a chance for a bowl game this year; I was not among them. I wasn't taking UNI for granted, either. A friend from out of state who knows nothing about the teams asked me what I expected Saturday afternoon, and I said I thought ISU probably would win a close game. I've seen too many UNI-ISU games -- for that matter, you can throw in UNI-Iowa -- to think the Panthers were going to roll over.

What I had NOT expected was the general feeling of disorganization, and the stupid mistakes by guys who have played enough to know better. Hell, at one point two ISU backs ran into each other in the backfield and play had to be stopped while they were treated for injuries. Seriously. Senior placekicker missed a PAT. Kickoff guy put one out of bounds. One of the best punters in the country shanked one 10 yards. On the interception that set up UNI's winning score, there was nobody within 20 yards of the DB. A long punt return was negated by a block in the back that was far, far removed from anyone involved in the play. A nice gain on a screen pass was called back for holding -- holding on a screen pass!!

I thought Ben Bruns put it pretty well -- as he often does -- in his postgame remarks. He said he thought everybody realized there was a lot of work to do, and the team would be better at the end of the year than at the start.....but not that the starting point would be so low.

It's just one game, but this was a brutal loss, with games at Iowa and TCU next.

As an academic institution, ISU has many excellent programs. I have many colleagues who have gone on to be faculty in their math, physics, and engineering programs. They definitely have quality people there. Furthermore, they are very solid in ag-sciences. Lastly, they have a top notch vet school.

Now, I wouldn't claim that they have excellent balance in their academic programs. Nor would I claim that they share the same broad excellence that Iowa has ... Iowa having a great college of liberal arts, surprisingly good media/journalism program, an excellent med school, a very good law school, a pretty good business school, a pretty good dental program, and, of course, they have the world-famous writer's work-shop.

If you don't like the Cyclone sports ... bag on the sports ... as a school, it is a fine academic institution. Where ISU fans get carried away is they seem to weigh the import of tech programs above others ... and therein is their mistake.

I didn't see the game, just heard it was a comedy of errors.

But I agree. Even if Iowa State had won by 30 there's still no logical way anyone could project Iowa State to be bowl bound this season. This year's Cyclone football team from the beginning was destined to have their season end in November--which after last night is an assertion John Madden would be proud of.

Iowa State fans need to be patient. You never know what the team will look like 2-3 years from now.
