Somewhere in Iowa
Not all ISU girls are homely. Part of it is I can imagine them serving me my average meal at Applebee's and not being grossed out.

The South end stadium renovation/addition isn't 1/2 bad. They have a nice area beneath the stands for viewing the game and other games/events. It's nice that the stadium no longer looks like Valley Stadium in WDM.

Cyclone fans like to wear their Cyclone babies strapped to their front/chest. I saw at least 4 people that thought it a good idea to strap babies to them and head to a night game. Do Cyclone parents have separation anxiety if gone from Cyclone baby for a few hours?

Their stadium food is downright crappy at best. I like that they serve Pepsi products. My son's small gatorade was $5.00 and Soda $4.50. Seems high, even for a stadium.

Why can't they pick one color of red for uniforms, flag girls, cheerleaders, band, etc? Is it difficult to come up with a 'Cyclone/Cardinal Red' and stick with it?

That whole first down chant, I despise KSU or any other fan base that taught them this.

They do a decent job of showing scores. It beats Kinnick telling me the 0-0 score of a 2:30 or 7:30 game at noon.

ISU fans celebrated their great 1965 team that went 5-4-1 and finished 4th in the Big 8 AND their 2000 Insight.com bowl team. If I was on that 65 team, I would rather you not recognize me at all. I don't want to be embarrassed by this 'accomplishment' when I'm in my 70's.

My Cyclone Fan son had fun, though the baby strapping phenomena confused him.

If it makes you feel any better, Florida State can't find the exact shade of garnet, either.

I don't get the flag girls. I've wondered about this for years. It's not that they have the wrong shade of red; they have totally different colors. I think they were purple Saturday. Maybe blue.

Thanks for coming to the game and bringing your son.

Sounds to me like a typical 50th anniversary team celebration instead of celebration of a particularly great team. Pretty standard fare.

I've noticed this bizarre baby strapping phenomenon you speak of--maybe it originated at Jack Trice.

It's possible that Cyclone fans--by and large unfamiliar with their own stadium except for the times when Iowa plays there--caught sight of the highway overpass sign in the end zone and wanted to be conscientious about keeping both hands on the wheel, even from the stands.

Perhaps you're correct. Why use the term 'great'? Also, when does Iowa celebrate their 1965 team?

1 I am not sure I understand the question but in the statement I was responding to, you made it sound like the celebration was about the accomplishment. I pointed out it was likely about the timing (50 years is a typical anniversary milestone) as opposed to celebrating a team being "great" or having a certain level of accomplishment.
2 I don't know when or if Iowa will celebrate the 1965 team, but I am also not a Hawkeye fan or Iowa alum. I do know that my school, Purdue has typically honored the 25 and 50 year team at homecoming each year. I'm sure each school has their own version of this.

1. Mega-dittoes on the "Another first down!" crap. I hated that when I first heard it at Okie State, hated it even more when I later heard it at Kansas State, and was stunned and devastated when ISU started doing it.

2. Agree about the color. It has been cardinal since the late 19th century. This shouldn't be so hard to get right.

3. A 50th anniversary is a 50th anniversary. Isn't relevant how successful the team was. FWIW, I was a sophomore that year. It was actually a pretty good team. Tied Colorado at Boulder, lost at Oklahoma by 4, screwed the pooch in the last game by losing at New Mexico by 4.

Did you gather from my original post that I was at the game? Having said that, ISU announcers used the word 'great'. I don't have the imagination to make crap like that up.

Or to my point in the original post- Why celebrate it?
Have you seen the standard they have at ISU for greatness?

From their great reverence you'd think Seneca Wallace won the Heisman, cured cancer, created world peace and won 6 Super Bowls with a high school cast all in one fall season.

Or to my point in the original post- Why celebrate it?

Because that is what schools do? You get a bunch of teammates together, you have a nice weekend get together, they get announced at a break in a FB game. Maybe some of them are potential donors to the AD and school. Maybe it is fun for everyone involved. This isn't something groundbreaking that no has ever done before which was my point.

If ISU doesn't celebrate teams like this they will be out of teams to celebrate pretty quickly. You can only celebrate the 9 win team and Peach Bowl team from the 70's so many times.

They could celebrate Troy Davis, but he may not be smart enough to get a plane ride here by himself. He might end up in Idaho.

Do you mean the Playboy preseason #3 team led by coaching legend Jerry Burns and quarterback Gary Snook?
You're wrong, but you're not as wrong as most Hawkeye fans. I have won a number of bets on this subject. In fact, I saved the Playboy issue for more than 20 years just to win bets.

Most often, the Hawkeye fan will say Playboy picked Iowa #1 in the nation. That is untrue. The spots picks were made for Playboy in those days by a guy named Anson Mount. If the name sounds familiar, it might be because Anson Mount, Jr., is the star of the TV series "Hell on Wheels." But anyway, Mount picked a top 20 every year....except in 1965. That season, he listed what he thought would be the top teams in the country based on won-loss record.....and alphabetically. Iowa was one of several teams he predicted would go 9-1, and it was listed at the top of the column because "I" comes before the other schools picked to go 9-1.

In fact, Mount didn't even pick Iowa to win the Big Ten that year. He picked Michigan. (Michigan State actually won it).

He did, however, put three Hawkeyes on the all-America first team -- OG John Niland, WR Karl Noonan and QB Gary Snok -- and he did pick Jerry Burns as national coach of the year.

Do you still have that issue? Niland and Noonan went on to have pretty fair NFL careers. Bump Elliott was the coach at Michigan and without looking it up, I don't believe they fared very well either. That season I saw my first Hawkeye game in person, against the Minnesota greasy Gophers. The highlight was the student section chanting, "have another beer Snook".

No, I no longer have it. I think Niland was all-pro with the Cowboys, and Noonan played for a number of years. I think Snook passed away not too long ago.

That was a classic under-achieving team. A lot of really good talent. They didn't have a running back. IIRC, the guy who started there in the opener was a little fella named Dalton Kimball, who shortly thereafter was known as Dalton Fumble.

Iowa was upset at home in the opener by Washington or Washington State, I think 7-0. The next week they were on TV at Oregon State -- being on TV was a very, very rare thing in 1965 -- and they looked great, winning easily. They never won again.

isu has/had a legit shot for a while of building a program in football in the big12, dunno if that shot is still there

IIRC Noonan played for the Dolphins, Snook was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals but some issue I can not recall result with him being cut....Gary Snook might have had the best passing arm of any QB in Iowa history.

isn't he the guy who punched somebody at ohio st or was that woody?
That was Woody, and it's why Bruce left ISU. He probably wouldn't have gone anywhere else; OSU was not only the best job in America, it's his alma mater.

Woody slugged a Clemson player in a bowl game after the player intercepted an OSU pass.

Minor trivia, since this thread started with mention of the ISU reunion.....The ISU quarterback who was inducted into the school's hall of fame Saturday, Tim Van Galder, was also drafted by the Cardinals, I think the next year.

Didn't he drive a Corvette around campus? He was originally from St. Louis I think.

He was from Madison, actually. His father was the OC for Milt Bruhn. He (Tim) played a year at a prep school-type place.

He was one of a vanishing breed in the mid-sixties, the classic BMOC. Good-looking as hell. Girlfriend was a knockout blonde named Wendy. All-conference baseball pitcher in addition to being a good QB. I don't specifically remember the Corvette, but it sounds familiar.

My favorite story about him -- his nickname was "Spider" -- involves the Shrine East-West all-star game, and requires me to give a history lesson to some of the younger HROT people.

In the '60s the name of Carol Doda was extremely well known. She was the star attraction at a San Francisco go-go club called The Condor Club. She was the first topless dancer that anybody'd ever heard of, and also the first to popularize silicon breast implants, going from a 34 to a 44. She -- and the "new twin peaks of San Francisco -- were a staple for comedians. I am linking a NSFW photo: http://www.boobpedia.com/boobs/Carol_Doda

Well, Van Galder hooked up with her while he was in San Francisco prepping for the all-star game and was seen with her on a number of occasions, including dancing -- probably the frug or watusi. A photo of the two of them got big play, as you might expect. Unfortunately for Van Galder's playing prospects, the photo was taken at 4 a.m., which did not please the coaches.

He didn't get into the game until late in the fourth quarter. When he did, he got a huge ovation from the crowd.

Great Moments in Iowa State Football History.

Perhaps that should be singular! Oh wait, you are counting both of them!;)

They did Troy Davis by showing a run of his '96 against Missouri.
