Jacksonville Mayoral Election

Didn't know that Clint Eastwood was in politics but I guess he was the mayor of a tiny town in the 80's.

But that barely counts. I mean it wasn't even a full time gig and his salary as mayor was $200 a month (which to his credit he donated).

But fair enough Al Franken and Sonny Bono count.

Does Kari Lake count?

Does Kari Lake count?
She ran for a full time office so I would count it.

I just don't think it should count if you are running for some small part time office. Especially when you are talking about a nationally well known actor like Clint Eastwood.

I guess Herschel Walker counts then and we can add him to the long list of sports people that have been elected throughout the years even though he lost.

I understand that but are there two separate governmental constructs? One for the county and another for the city? Is there both a Mayor and Chairman of the BCC?

They don't have a County commission; they're a "consolidated government." They have a city council that consists of 19 members (14 districts, for which you have to be a resident of that district to serve in that seat - and 5 "at-large" who can live anywhere in the citycounty).

Negative. Just one uniform government. They do have 19 council members.

I think the R's/Ron went a bridge too far with the 6 week abortion ban. Probably didn't effect this race directly but 2024 will be interesting.

After looking a little closer, I think 10 or 15 years ago they changed the rules a little regarding the "at-large" seats.

There are 14 district seats; for those, you have to live in the district, and I believe only the residents of that district vote for their respective Representatives. Then there are 5 "at-large" seats, but the county is divided into 5 large districts; you have to live in the district to run, but the seats are voted on County-wide (more similar to how most county commission seats are elected in the State).
From the 19, the commissioners annually select a "president" and vice-president. They don't have any extra powers or authority - simply chair the meetings and show up at the ceremonial stuff.

My point (that seems to be missed here by some) is that these “TV personalities” are well trained in the optics that the American public has becomes accustomed to for politicians.
When I was growing up, it was “military careers/experiences” that seemed to be a precursor to a political career...but since the end of the draft and ERA acceptance, TV personalities seem to be replacing those with military stories.
As the demographics of America transition, so does the public’s expectations of politicians.

Sooners QB was in the 1994 class with Largent…..can’t remember his name…..JC Watts

Also at least one former Real World cast member was in Congress…Sean Duffy

Does a former state representative and city council member not have name ID?
Do you really think that name ID is on the level of a nightly news caster and pretty big name in the community? People who don't recognize her politics have heard of foundation and breast cancer stuff. I haven't said anything bad about her, I've just said she had more name ID than her opponent.

I’m glad to see you recognize that Trump was POTUS because of name ID. Davis had a boatload more money and squandered it.

Jeez, why does everything come back to Trump? Ronald Reagan was sort of famous too... an actor, sports broadcaster etc. Can we find someone, anyone else to talk about?

If you don’t see the obvious parallel between your comments of electing people on name ID and Trump, I’m not sure I can help you.
You drew the parallel, all I was saying is that not EVERYTHING has to some how come back to Donald Trump. I'm honestly just tired of him and constant associations. Every thread is But Trump, this local election thread had absolutely NOTHING to do with him, and yet here he is again. DD has name ID because she was a local broadcaster who left the sportscaster and started banging the weather man... now that I said it out loud I guess this does have a Trump-like story line.

Well, I’m tired of him as well, but given that he leads in the polls by over 25%…

Wasn't a fan of Curry or Brown before him. Deegan is a Hazouri, and was on the news forever. I am sure that helped her.
And she mentioned her Uncle - Tommy Hazouri (RIP) more than once. More Republicans in Duval than Dems but Davis is not a good campaigner.
There were also several R’s who voted for a Democrat for their City Council District (me included) and probably just decided to vote that way for Mayor as well.
She went to my high school and is also an FSU grad. She won fair and square so we shall see what happens. She and 8 new City Council Reps have a short rookie window.

And you live in the blue bubble of Tally where you’re stuck. So it’s “but Trump” every day all day.
? I can read the polls. I haven’t seen one in months that he’s not up big in. Hell, the poll last week has him up big among Florida Republicans. But, you keep pretending that the party faithful isn’t fully in love with Trump.

I don't know how much I trust polls in general, but depending how the poll questions are phrased, that can influence answers, like "who are you most likely to vote for?" vs "Among these options who is most likely to win?" I say this because I think a lot of republicans believe Trump has the best chance of winning. They aren't looking at this through the lens of who they want to win, or who they support.

In a losing effort Trump still had more votes than any republican ever, still had more than 70 million votes, and would have won EVERY election prior to 2020... Remarkably Joey managed to also get the most votes period, and I'm curious to see if they are our binary choice in 2024 how many people just sit it out in a silent protest of their two terrible options.

It’s every single poll!
