Former President Donald Trump often basks in the glow of press attention. Just as often, he trashes the press and threatens journalists.

On the campaign trail and in interviews, Trump has suggested that if he regains the White House, he will exact vengeance on news outlets that anger him.

More specifically, Trump has pledged to toss reporters in jail and strip major television networks of their broadcast licenses as retribution for coverage he didn't like.

So if he actually jailed reporters critical of him, in addition to canceling elections and closing churches while laundering billion$ in foreign donations he’d be just like Zelenskyy.

1st Amendment:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances"

In case there are any members of the MAGA idiot brigade who still care about the Constitution of the United States.

It’s no wonder Trump admires Adolf Hitler so much.

Folks like DeSantis will be in charge.
And people like this lawyer will resign, leaving the entire DOJ to people who will use the power of the state to silence dissent and punish those who oppose them.

Then, this will go to Roberts' SC, and you'll have a 6-3 decision that the President's Absolute Immunity allows him to suspend the 1A when he decides there's "a threat".

Then you might as well just throw out the whole Constitution.

Uh....if you bother to listen to the testimony (from 100% Republicans) provided to the 1/6 Committee, this is EXACTLY what some of Trump's staff and allies tried to do.

They were only thwarted by people who refused to do it.
Again: Does anyone seriously think Trump will make the same mistake, twice? He already has the Project2025 "roadmap" to do exactly this. That roadmap is to fire/eliminate ALL civil servants "not loyal to" the President and his causes.

You will not have anyone left in government or DOJ to hold up the guardrails, anymore.

Now you're worried about a political party using the courts to punish their enemies? Trump, Giuliani, Manafort, Bannon, Stone and Flynn would like to say hello.

Also....the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 is what was used to intern Japanese Americans during WWII.

Trump claims he is going to use this Act on "gangs and illegals", despite NONE of the countries any of them are from being "at war" against the US (ergo - that Act does not and cannot apply here).

If he uses it on people he deems "illegals", he'll use it on US Citizens as well, because the text of the Act does not allow it to be used in the manner he has laid out. That will not stop Stephen Miller and Gen. Flynn from doing it, anyway.

That Act was never ruled on as unconstitutional by the SC after WWII, despite most scholars recognizing that w/o due process, it absolute is unconstitutional. This is how Rule of Law and our Constitution unravel. Quickly.

What do you believe the "next step" would be by DeSantis if his one lawyer had not resigned and news stations continued running ads? The short answer here is to start arresting people on false charges, and who will stop them if full-on MAGAs are running the show and overtly ignoring Constitutional protections?

Every one of those folks has had Due Process for crimes committed. Most have had independent grand juries bringing the charges. Not remotely "political retaliation".

All Bannon had to do is show up for the 1/6 Committee and do what Stone and Flynn did: Plead the 5th to every question.
That's it. Instead, he ****ed around and found out.

Like I have said many times, I put nothing past Trump.

And now that the SCOTUS has made it clear they have no intention of upholding our three-branch system of checks and balances, I think it’s a foregone conclusion Trump will trample all over the Constitution of the United States with impunity. I mean, Jesus Christ, too many elected officials refused to hold Trump accountable for inspiring a pitifully attempted coup, but an attempted one nonetheless, because Trump insidiously tossed in one “peacefully” remark during his deranged speech/rally to give himself an out in case the attack on the Capitol failed.

We live in a very stupid country. There’s a reason all of Europe marvels at how stupid many Americans are.

Yep, glad you see what he aspires to. If you think that zelensky does it and you don't like it, then you must find it abhorrent in Bonespur's desire for it too. Good job!

If this will get the Establishment to start supporting the first amendment instead of undermine it, I'm all for it.

It was fascinating see the exact same people who wanted to censor others during COVID on the basis of a threat to health and wellbeing reject those arguments when Desantis tried to use that angle to take down objectively false statements about FL abortion laws.

Maybe Trump will come out in favor of all our stupid wars, and we can see the Establishment pivot against that too.

Ha! Who am I kidding, forever wars forevermore!

I think when people do abhorrent things it makes them abhorrent. Things like the Bush/Cheney/War crimes/Patriot Act.

Things like using a false flag as an excuse to have tens of thousands of our young boys sent overseas to die for the MIC (Gulf of Tonkin…cough, cough).

You government cultists are just reaping what you sow. Choosing the lesser of two evils every four years since the turn of the last century has f***ed us over so bad it’s unlikely we’ll ever recover.

Thanks.

So exactly what is the problem here? Pretty sure most of the names you listed off were given due process, a chance to make a defense and ultimately found guilty in a court of law.

Maybe the political party angle here isn't that one is going after the other. Maybe its just that one party is full of criminals and they don't like it when they get caught, face justice and want to blame someone else.

There are none so blind as those who will not see...

There are none so blind as those who will not see...

Is it me the one not seeing? Because you seem to not want to see the criminals for what they are, you want to excuse their crimes and blame someone else. What happened to the party of law and order?

Here are some things you refuse to see, so let me shine a light on them so you can promptly ignore and/or deflect them.

Flynn - Reached a plea deal with the government in December 2017, who was POTUS then?
Manafort - Indicted in October 2017, who was POTUS then?
Bannon - In jail for refusing a congressional subpoena and refusing to turn over documents? These were all choices by Bannon, tell me how political party was a factor here? Should it be ok to refuse a congressional subpoena?
Stone - Found guilty of obstructing a congressional investigation in November of 2019. Who was POTUS that year and the years leading up to it?
Giuliani - Where to start, his big problems all started when he decided the 2020 election was stolen. His legal troubles are in Georgia (interference and defamation) and Arizona. Does POTUS have power over state charges? Did Bidens DOJ have any sway when Smartmatic and the voting machine companies came after him?
Trump - Found liable of rape. Found guilty by a jury of fraud. Found guilty by a judge of defamation. NY Fraud case started in 2019, who was POTUS then? How do you blame Trump running his fat mouth and piling on the defamation suit on Biden or the DOJ?

What you fail to see is these are just dumb criminals who got caught. You want to excuse their behavior and blame someone else for it because you don't want to believe the people you worship could be so flawed. What is so abnormal about a bunch of criminals getting together and doing crimes? If anything, its more believable.

I still find it amusing the "lock her up crowd" wants to cry "weaponization of the DOJ" when the shoe is on the other foot. Yet another example of the MAGA lack of self-awareness.

What did you ask for from Santa this year?

Personally, I think the greater/greatest non-ordinary course likelihood of reporters actually being jailed if trump were elected would arise out of a subpoena from a democratic house or senate investigating some trumpian malfeasance/cheating/meanness, the reporter refusing to disclose sources, and then the house holding him/her in contempt.

That's naive. He used the government against citizens the first time around, and the lesson he seems to have learned is get scummier people to work for you, and issue more pardons because now that the SCOTUS carved out total immunity he can do whatever he wants. He just needs the scum bags in positions to carry out his will. Sure, the journalists would probably be released, but the threats are chilling, and that is the intent.

After Barack Obama took office, the number of cases trying press leakers on the same level as foreign agents increased at a rapid clip. Former Washington Post editor-in-chief Leonard Downie Jr. detailed the Obama administration's treatment of individuals providing secret documents to the press in 2013 in a special report for the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). "The administration’s war on leaks and other efforts to control information are the most aggressive I’ve seen since the Nixon administration, when I was one of the editors involved in The Washington Post’s investigation of Watergate", wrote Downie Jr. "The 30 experienced Washington journalists at a variety of news organizations whom I interviewed for this report could not remember any precedent."

James Risen is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. He's also currently under subpoena, possibly facing jail time, because of his reporting.

Specifically, he's being investigated because of an article on a CIA ploy to hinder Iran's quest for a nuclear bomb that went epically sideways and may have actually helped Iran along. 60 Minutes ran a great story on him this weekend, during which they cited a well-known statistic: the Obama administration has prosecuted more national security "leakers" than all other presidencies combined, eight to three.
