James Daniels is not very good.

It's hard to say but it's true. The superlatives mean nothing. I've watched a ton of tape on this guy, I watch games and reruns specifically to watch the center on every down and I am telling you that it is not pretty. The guy simply cannot stay on his feet. That is his biggest problem, that he is on the ground waaaaay too much. He will make contact and go to his knees all the time. His pass pro is highly suspect and was responsible for getting Beathard killed on multiple occasions. The first half of the Michigan game was especially ugly. In the Purdue game he gets pushed back into the RG who was lucky to not get his leg broken. The two point play in the Minnesota game he's just flat on his stomach while we're trying to run a power play to make it a seven point game. There's at least a dozen plays in every game where I'm shaking my head at this guy. It's just a disaster. I don't get it. It's almost like he's too tall for the C position and has a hard time getting leverage on people. But even when his technique is decent he just seems lackadaisical in general.

I'm sure this won't be a popular opinion but I urge you to go watch the film if you disagree. I sincerely hope he has made big strides in the off-season this year, because James Daniels has a long way to go before he belongs in the class of some of the great Hawkeye centers of the Ferentz era.

You clearly are aware of the controversial nature of your opinion, as your first sentence acknowledges this. Yet, you provide no evidence to support your opinion (game clips, outside assessments, etc).

You specifically mentioned the Michigan game of last year. I have not reviewed the tape of that game, but I did find an article by Marc Morehouse that referenced Daniels' blocking abilities in that game. He received a favorable assessment for his run blocking (in fact, he was the only Iowa lineman to receive a favorable review in that game) by Pro Football Focus.

I seem to remember a bit of criticism of Bryan Bulaga in his first couple of years also. He seemed to do ok as an upperclassman and after he graduated.

You should make a video tape of your analysis and insight to Ferentz and his staff. Include clips from the "tons" of video that you've reviewed. I'm sure that they will appreciate your insight and expertise. They may even invite you to interview for a potential assistant position. At a minimum, it will alert them to the possibility of using game film to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their players. They probably don't do that.

OP's only agenda was to see how many clicks he'd get on his thread. Looks like he succeeded as a troll, and I was a victim lol...

Plenty of accusations of my being being a troll, plenty of chatter of the aforementioned superlatives, which hate to tell you, mean nothing. A few mentions of James' young age, which sounds more like an excuse as opposed to a rebuttal of my critique. And I was aware of his age btw but it wouldn't come as a surprise because he played like an 18/19 yr old in the B1G last year. He played like a lineman who lived off of being bigger/stronger than everybody in HS and is now matched against people who are up to the challenge. Someone asked about my credentials and what qualifies me to judge this player but let's be honest, if I told you would that make you agree with me? Probably not. Besides, the worlds biggest fool can say that the sun isn't shining but that doesn't make it dark out. My personal favorite was someone posting a single play from a highlight segment where Jame's looked good and used that to conclude that I'm wrong. To that I'll say, there's a reason scouts watch game film and not highlight reels, ya know? I never said the guy never had any good plays. Lastly, I fully acknowledge that coming in to IC and playing OL as a true freshmen is an unbelievable achievement. Very very few are able to even get an attempt at pulling it off. However that in and of itself could just as easily be seen as an indictment of the depth at the position than it could be a credit to James. In in of itself, that means very little.

That said, great, the Hawkeye OL won an award for best in the country last year. Congratulations. It's a great honor and it pleases me that Iowa received this recognition. But let's be real here, there is no flippin way they were the best OL in the country. Hell, even B. Ferentz himself said that the OL "struggled" at pass pro last year. Which you know, is a point I raised in the OP. The best OL in the country doesn't struggle at pass protection. The best OL in the country doesn't struggle at anything.

I noticed in another thread talking about where the Hawks ranked in rushing and after learning that Iowa was 49th-67th in the nation (depending on how you calculate it) everyone seemed to be in disbelief. But you're not in disbelief, you're in denial. And when you really start peeling back the layers it gets even worse...Iowa offense ranked 72 in total yards, 89th in passing, 54th in scoring, 67th in sacks allowed- 30 SACKS last year, for a team that rarely throws it. And 81 TFL!! Oh and btw, part of the reason the rushing ranking is sub par is BECAUSE of the TFL. Somebody please explain to me how the best OL in the country gives up 6 TFL per game.

Somehow the vaunted Iowa OL managed to achieve these abysmal results all the while having what appears to be an NFL capable QB,TE, 2 RB's and maybe a WR too. I've always said, when you have great skill players and you're mysteriously horrible on offense it's almost always due to poor OL play. Something is amiss here, and it doesn't take a troll to point it out.

If you are a troll you are very dedicated. Lots of words you just posted (that I didn't read). Just want to let you know that I think very lowly of people who call out 19-year-old football players. I thought there was some sort of forum rules for bashing players here on the forum.

I would take a James Daniels as the first commit in each of our recruiting classes going forward and be very happy. Heck of an athlete for a guy his size.

In summation: Troll.

Some fair points backed up with facts. But we are a couple of weeks out from the opening kickoff. This is the time of year I want to be excited and hopeful about what the 2017 version of the Hawkeyes can do. Bad timing on your part to be negative and pick this fight.

People are simply pointing out the flaws in the leaps of your logic.
-I can show you video of every All-Pro NFL offensive linemen getting abused at one time or another. Just like every high light reel, there's a low light reel. No player wins every snap. At any level.
-When people talk about how well the OL played last year and they give them superlatives or awards, I'm sure factors are taken into account. Did the pass blocking suffer due to the fact that we didn't have WRs that could beat a defense long enough to get open? The best pass protectors can only block for a few seconds before they will get beat. The rules work against the offensive linemen in that they can't grab and they have to work inside of the defenders shoulder pads. If you really knew as much as you claimed to know about offensive line play, you would know this. Which leads to my next point...
-since you know so much about it, why don't you post several video clips of James Daniels playing "poorly" and break down precisely what he did wrong and the proper technique he needs to use, to avoid getting beaten like that again. Maybe you can string enough video evidence together to show us a pattern of poor technique that bolsters your opinion and convinces us that you might actually know something.

Most of the lineman James Daniels played against in high school are starters at various Big Ten schools right now and he dominated. Where he played at in Ohio most of the kids were a decent size and skill level. I would put my credentials against yours and I would say your evaluations are your opinion but you are way off. James is being considered by a lot as the top center in the country and some scouts don't think it's even close. I also believe he consistently graded out as the highest or one of the highest lineman every game.

I also think he is a little over the top but he is EXACTLY like you and about 40 other posters on here that are constantly calling out our coaches, its like the twilight zone. When he posted this I have to confess I was giddy, I knew the fallout was coming. You honestly can't make this stuff up...

This is my personal favorite something I've said many times to you guys.....
