Anyone know Jared Franek? If so can you ask him if he'd like to transfer to a title contender next year? It's much warmer in Iowa than Fargo. I'd guess the NIL opportunities as well as post grad opportunities are much greater in Iowa City. Plus I'd think an Iowa degree would take you further than a North Dakota State degree. He seems to be the best opportunity to combine another year along with Iowa being the most appealing than anyone else in the top 8 now.

Jared spent his whole life in Fargo and his entire brand is based on being “homegrown” right now, selling t shirts and stuff. I’m an NDSU alum and was close to the program at one point. I don’t know for certain but I think he’d be very difficult to pull away from home.

Small world. Thanks for the response. Please let him know that I have a bet on it though. 😉

Tristan Lara entered the Portal - next Ft Dodge Hawkeye? could he go 157?

I find it funny that fans are hoping to "land" athletes through the portal who aren't even in the portal. Today's landscape I guess.

I'm not necessarily 'hoping' to land Lara (who is in the portal BTW). I was asking if anyone thought it was a possibility. B/c I know some posters on this board have their ears to the ground

I think NIL will be a bigger issue this next year with the portal.

I wouldn't expect to see many names tossed around until May/June.

Could offer a low risk opportunity to increase the competition in the room. Would still need to earn it.

I have zero issue with him transferring to Iowa. I’ve been a fan of his since HS. But I don’t think that’s really the question at hand. I would hope he wouldn’t be brought in with the idea that he’s the answer to the 157 question.

Some guys just loves them some homegrown talent no matter the talent level.
I confess that I'm one of them. However, they have to move up the depth chart. If you win your wrestle-offs, then you wrestle. if you don't you don't. It's not a popularity contest or a coaches preference. The better wrestler should earn the spot every time.

Sure. But a room full of marginal, local talent won’t fare well during the season even if winning wrestle offs in the room.

Consider this my bookmark for when some people here freak out when any other top program recruits from the portal over their current team.
I agree that NIL will play an increased role in the future. As soon as there are some measurable results in athletes pockets, it will create a new recruiting advantage for some.

Why not. 41 is opening up and demas has shown he can be legit.
22-23
Demas 141
Henson- 133- he was down there for freestyle, but no idea if he can hold it for a season
Schriever- RS

23-24
Schriever 133
Henson 141

That doesn't solve any 157 issues, but I could see Demas fitting into the lineup for a year. No idea if he has any interest?

What issues at 57? Lol

Currently no one on the roster will score points at the Ncaa tournament in 2023 at 157. That’s the issue.
I think what has been covered time and time again is that having a "hole" here or there isn't the issue. It's having enough horses to score big points at NCAA time that matters most. Hypothetically only, with 141 clearing out, if Demas came in and was a finalist and we didn't fill the 157 situation, that's a win. Of course, that's far from a certainty.

Alright the other issue is how many top 4s does Iowa have next year? Spencer, Warner, and Cass. With Kennedy as a good possibility in a loaded weight class. The other 6 weights will be somewhere between low all American and R16 types. I think next years team will be a better dual team than tourney team as currently constructed.

Dub, the assumption is that marginal talent won't win a wrestle-off. Maybe that assumption is not correct, but it should be.

And based on action this year Kennedy is more in the blood round to low AA range currently.

What if good local talent, but marginal on national level is all you have?

The bottom line for me, is that I really don’t care where our athletes come from. Not one bit. It’s all the same. I just want the best talent money can buy. And that’s not necessarily the talent folks enjoyed watching and became attached to at the Iowa High School events.

Fortunately, that's not Iowa's problem right now. I'm for recruiting the best from everywhere as well, but it's the vibrant local culture that supports the sport. I didn't say anything about who gets scholarships. With only 9.9 to spread around, it's not gravy rain.

If the competitors are all marginal then the assumption isn’t correct. For instance, adding Lara to the existing options isn’t going to automatically make Lara a much better wrestler. We’ve had marginal guys starting before who were wrestle off winners.

Is it possible that PK has been above his ideal weight and may be the solution at 157 for one year? Perhaps Nelson at 165?

He was always above his ideal weight in high school, and there are some that think he should be 174 still. IMO he looks like a natural 165. Nelson looks like a natural 174.

I'm not a huge fan of moving people around just to make a "stronger lineup". Get your best people at their best weights, then have the individual take care of themselves (and the team score will take care of itself)

I don’t think that’s true. Scuffle PK wasn’t anywhere near 100% and also 165 graduates a lot
I hadn't heard about him being less than 100% this year. I know he defaulted at the end of the Scuffle but figured it was one of screw it I'm done defaults.
