Jay Bilas on ISU-OU game

Didn't watch much of the game, but I did catch a little near the end of the first half. An ISU kid was closely guarded and, after he finally passed out of trouble, Bilas said, "That was close to a five second call. Good thing somebody came up to help him out."

Except, of course, there is no five second closely guarded call in NCAA basketball anymore. Typical brilliance by ESPN broadcasters. They get paid big bucks to report college basketball, and they don't even know the rules.

Well done once again, worldwide leader. LOL

He said it because he picked up his dribble. There is still a 5 second call if you are not dribbling the ball. It was an astute and correct observation by Bilas.

Bilas is one of the best color guys out there IMO

I would agree if he would stick to the game at hand. What bothers me is when he starts pontificating on what great guys Boeheim, Roy Williams and Larry Brown are instead of calling them out for the cheaters they are. Of course, you would expect nothing less from ESPN these days.

I agree with those who are defending Bilas. Bill Rafferty is my favorite commentator of all time but I respect Bilas and think he is spot on most of the time.

Rafferty? Really? He sounds like he's 12 hours after a triple order of mozzarella sticks and he's trying to force out a growler.

It's Raftery, not Rafferty. And while his little quick "Onions" or "and the kiss" get a bit irritating after while, overall he's as solid of an analyst as they come. I like Bilas a lot also, and on the BTN side, I really like Shon Morris. Morris really didn't impress me early in his broadcasting career, he seemed a bit too homerish for me (more like favoring the better team), but he has evened out a lot and isn't afraid to be critical when appropriate.

I really enjoy Raftery. On every possession one team succeeds and one team fails. Some announcers always point out the failure side of the game. Raftery likes to look at it more as great execution rather than bad defense or great D rather than poor execution. It's much more enjoyable to get the more positive perspective.

You guys ever seriously listen to Raftery? The last game of ours he did was terrible. He didn't say one relevant thing the whole night. Trust me, I listened to it a few times.

He may have been good years ago but he's worthless now.

Best call in college bb history.

Love Raftery. It's possible his best days are behind him, but I love how upbeat he is. He gives credit instead of blame.

Bilas was drafted but did not play a game in the NBA. He played two years of professional ball overseas.

He graduated from Duke with a law degree. In addition to him being an analyst he practices law.

According to his college stats he had a very good shooting percentage.

Yep Bilas is about as good as it gets. He knows basketball.

Agree.....at least the most candid and opinionated makes him the leader today.

However; the best ever, IMHO, at color and teaching the game to his viewing TV audience was Al Mcguire....inductee of the BB HOF.

I have noticed a decline recently, but prefer to remember him at the top of his game. I really haven't heard him call a game recently to be honest.
