JBo has to sit until he guards

He probably gave up 30 so it’s not even. He can’t play defense and doesn’t want to.
This from one of the all-time frontrunners. Once Bohannon wins a couple of games for the Hawks, as he has several times, this loser will be mewling, "Sorry, I was wrong about him."

I also saw Connor take a few more 3s tonight when he should never shoot another shot from outside the arc again.........
My issue with this is that he’s open and when he is , he needs to shoot or he shouldn’t be out there. Everyone playing should be ready to shoot when they are as wide open as he’s been. Now if you want to say he shouldn’t be out there then when there are better options, I agree.

Kakert called it on the podcast a week ago, if CJF is going to be out, its time to play Bohannon and Toussaint together. Keep Murray coming off the bench as the spark plug.
He’s spot on. Murray starting hasn’t been good. He missed so many easy shots around the bucket last night. I don’t think he’s hit a 3 in several games. He seems to be a lot better off the bench. We are 12-1 with CJF and 1-3 without him.

It’s lack of athletic ability. Slow, slow, slow. That and Fran continues to play guys that play no defense. The Starting 5 are unbelievably unathletic, and are simply overmatched against a team with even halfway decent athletes.

I watched the game again to see how they got so many 3s off.

A couple we're decently defended tough shots.

Some were lack of ability to close out fast enough.

And probably half were Iowa just being lost. Looking at eachother and pointing while leaving guys wide open.

Nunge is the most lost with Connor and Joe a close second. JBO was actually probably the least lost but he still loses track to easily.

My main takeaways.

1, Connor has to sit in favor of Perkins and Toussaint. This has to happen in order to save this season.

2. Nunge cannot play the 4. Hes a 5. Hes good there. Hes terrible defensely at the 4.

3. Most importantly, get rid of that matchup zone. The players don't understand it.

With you on driving the wife crazy. I was watching/yelling/complaining at the TV while my 2 year old was still up. I finally just stopped watching at the 4 min timeout knowing we lost and hoping that I was wrong. My 2 yo said "why did you stop daddy." Good life lesson for her to not give up on your team that I blew there. I had to say daddy was getting too mad... yes bad dad of the year but I did make sure she got to sleep.

Anyway... to the defense. I think there is something seriously wrong with the matchup zone and the switching. There are times where it looks like we have things right and we switch for no explainable reason and usually Connor is involved. Our rotation is also usually really putrid as well where you just know that wide open 3 is coming.

My beef with Bohannon is not his effort or rotations on defense but that it is he can't defend straight up. I thought I counted 3 or 4 times in the first half alone that he was beat off the dribble directly leading to a basket. It is a very rare team/guard that can't do it. I just don't see what makes him a better all around player than Toussaint to deserve so many minutes.
08: not true on JBo being left behind 3 or 4 times in the first half. Please watch the game again. It happened once. And he immediately returned the favor and did the same to the guy. This is just once those false assertions that finds legs because we just repeat the same falsehood. Please rewatch the game - cheers

FU. And, no I won’t. I’m not blaming JBO for everything. He has never been a point guard and Fran fails to get it. He’s a legacy recruit, therefore Fran plays him too much.

If that truly is where you draw the line in the sand you might as well ask him to hand in his jersey. This isn't personal, I don't think his body is capable of keeping up with athletes at this level any more. The guy is limited to a situational sniper and he is in a slump right now.

Guys, JBO was actually not close to the biggest problem defensively last night and I've been no big fan of his ever.

Aleksei is correct. Connor, Nunge, Joe and Luka all gave up just as much if not more than JBO.

The Nunge/Connor area of the zone was far and away the biggest culprit.

Theres times when Nunge is so lost on the wing hes not watching the ball or a man.

Fran is an idiot for continuing with lineup in that zone for as long as he did.

I'm simply saying he should take one dribble inside the 3 pt line and shoot a closer jump shot, to not only increase the odds of the shot going in, but also so we don't have to see his ugly set-shot form that isn't doing anything for him as far as making baskets....................................that's all.

I will. I almost said in my quote to you that I was going to give you the benefit of the doubt for rewatching it.

Who's in a slump? You aren't talking about the guy that hit 4 3's, was 4/4 at the FT line and led the team in scoring last night are you? Seriously?

Yes, I'm talking about the guy who shot 0% against Indiana, 33% against Illinois, 50% against MSU, and 45% against OSU.

Ahh.. Here is a definition for you: Slump: "a sudden severe or prolonged fall in the price, value, or amount of something". He had 5 superb outings averaging 17 points per game while shooting over 60% from three point range. He had one really bad outing against Indiana. 50% shooting is not a slump. It is better than the vast majority of players in the country. Only 2 hawkeyes are shooting that for the season. Only 3 Hawkeyes are shooting 40% from the 3 pt line. Last night JBO shot 4 of 8 (50%) from beyond the arc and was 5/11 overall for an effective FG% of 64%. On top of that he was 4-4 from the line. To call this a slump is ridiculous. If the whole team was in this slump we'd have won last night by double digits.

Disagree. He is in a slump. Life will go on.

I lost track of everything you wrote after the offer of wine from Napa. 😉

But, no, you're right, Bohannon played pretty well in the first half, especially when Joe T was playing point. I think if he's playing the 2 with Joe T or Ulis at point then he can be a real asset because Joe or Ulis can drive and kick and Bohannon can be set up for open shots and the defense suffers less with at least one decent perimeter defender beside him.

JB was not playing good defense the last 12+ minutes of the game. No, it wasn't just Bohannon playing slow, effortless defense (Connor and Garza were bad down the stretch), but he was making it easy for Ohio State -- Ahrens went on a run on Bohannon and when Bohannon tried to help he could never recover. Connor is definitely the bigger problem between the two, but Iowa needs guards who can penetrate and score or dish as well as play decent defense.
Connor was defending Ahrens pretty much exclusively.

JBo has been a great Hawkeye. The problem is he has a single set of skills...shooting the 3. He’s always been a huge liability on defense. I feel he could be out there for the minutes he’s getting, IF we had 4 other guys that could guard. And we don’t. And Fran won’t play match-ups. Never changes things based on opponents’ strength, score and situation. He did against Sparty by playing the bench extended minutes. And it worked. For the life of me I cannot understand their limited minutes last night, especially after a quick turnaround. Realistically, he could give say Toussaint and Murray more minutes in lieu of Connor and JBo.Those two combined would at least give us the same offensive production, but more importantly, much much better defense. We are way too reliant on having to shoot a high % to win. Teams have figured it out. But Fran won’t change....pretty sad. This team needs an attitude adjustment. The starters have become too complacent.

Yes please sit JBO down for Toussaint, sit Conner Clank down too....for anyone else.
Yes, Conner's assist to turn-over ratio is good, but I think any guard feeding LG would have those stats look good. There is a time and place for JBO to play, but defensively he sucks. Sorry, I wish that it were not true.

Connor was defending Ahrens pretty much exclusively.

When Ahrens hit his three 3s in a row the first two had JBO as the closest man at the top of the zone.

Those were the only buckets that were really "on" JBO.

One of Ahrnes 3s was kind of defended by I think Connor with a half hearted close out.

Both of Washington's 3s were against a confused combo of Nunge and Connor who were looking at eachother and pointing while he was shooting. One of them Nunge actually walked into Connor and screened him from closing out.

Weiskamp fell asleep on another and there was one that had no one within 10 feet in the corner.

I’m sorry but I disagree with almost all of this. It’s a scheme thing and has been since Fran started almost exclusively playing this zone. It’s also why we’re as bad as we are. I’m not going to blame Nunge for trying to get out to the corner when he has to go 10-15 feet. It can’t be done. Teams make 3-4 passes and get whatever shot they want against our zone. 95 % of college teams play man. Wisconsin is no more athletic than us and they can do it. And yes, they play at a much slower pace. Just play man. It can be done. Not saying we would be any good at it but could it really be worse than what we have seen over a 10 year period?

Good post. Wisconsin is definitely the exception. No blue chip recruits, blue collar work ethic, grind you down defensively and always have the Dean Oliver type guard like Trice the past few years.

Your not wrong, our zone sucks and the players clearly aren't locked in on what they are supposed to be doing.

Its a combo of lack of athleticism, lack of teaching/emphasis and lack of effort.

Fran has always let poor to terrible effort slide for his offensive stars. Peter Jok was the worst, and Tyler Cook was a close second. JBO learned it from those 2.

I do want to see more man, I mean who wouldn't after these last three shooting clinics.

But with the starters in it won't be much better.

As good as Luka and JBO can be offensively they are equally poor defensively.

But at least with man you take away allot of the confusion.

Not true. I’m sorry, but I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. Watch the game again and look for the lapses in Iowa’s match up zone.

He gave up 24. Here's my complete breakdown of the game. In my eyes going over it, you're completely wrong and JBo is definitely a big part of the problem on defense. And games that he does not score make it even worse. I love JBo, but he has to step up his game on the defensive side for us to have a chance. He did so the game after Fran pulled him into his office and told him to be better. He did not play well vs. OSU

19:43 – Jbo collapses too far into the post to help OSU open shot for 3 but misses. Not understanding help defense.

19:02 – Garza comes up to the free throw line and gets jabbed stepped. OSU scores 2. LG -2 Flat footed.

17:53 – Jbo gets caught flat footed on the wing, fouls his guy. Flat footed.

17:43 – JW jumps out to his guy way too close 26ft. from the basket. Gets blown by for 2. JW -2 Mental lapse

16:48 – KM helps on a screen and is late to get back to his guy. OSU for 3. KM -3 Not understanding help defense

15:35 – OSU on a secondary break, Connor points for help on 14 down the court. JBo points at him too as he takes 10 who’s cutting under the basket. KM doesn’t rotate and ends up guarding no one. OSU for an easy 3. KM -3 Mental lapse

15:04 – JBo sags too far into the high post, gets back out to his guy, but lets a wide open 3 without even a hand up. It’s missed. Not understanding help defense/lazy.

14:26 – LG helps on a screen but gets buried too far into the paint after the screener rolls for an OSU easy 2. LG -2 Mental lapse

13:34 – JBo once again gets blown by his guy but this time for an easy 2. JBo -2 Flat footed

12:54 – LG gets beat to post position on a good post up by OSU for an easy 2. LG -2 Mental lapse

12:03 – JBo over helps to the wing when JW was there. Gets caught moving one way too much and allows OSU guy into the lane on a dribble drive pullup. JBo -2 Not understanding help defense.

11:37 – After a miss, secondary break for OSU. PM doesn’t pick up his guy causing JW to help. This opens up a 3 which is missed. However, PM is so weak he gets moved by OSU on the rebound for layup. PM -2 Lack of strength

9:44 – Off of sideline inbounds, JT doesn’t move out on his guy far enough OSU shoots a 3 and scores. JT -3 Mental lapse

8:38 – JBo gets blown by off the dribble again for an OSU layup. JBo -2 Flat footed

8:06 – JBo gets posted up on a secondary break and OSU guy misses the turnaround. Lack of strength.

7:26 – After an offensive rebound where JBo failed to box out his man, PM lets OSU guy cut to through the lane with no communication. Nunge is already pinned on a post up. Easy 2 for OSU. PM -2 Not understanding help defense

6:45 – KM gets too far up on OSU big man in the corner and gets beat on a jab step. Fouls OSU score both free throws. KM -2 Flat footed

4:39 – KM gets caught in the post and doesn’t get out to the corner fast enough for an OSU 3. KM -3 Not understanding help defense.

4:03 – KM tries to go for a steal on the wing and misses badly. Ball goes to baseline and LG barely even moves to get to the shooter. 2 points. Both KM and LG were equally as bad so KM -1/LG -1 Mental lapse

3:09 – OSU sends a guy to the high post, JBo playing weak side takes him as he lets the other guy spot up for the 3. This should have been LG man as we now have 3 guys guarding 2. OSU shoots wide open 3. JBo -3 Not understanding help defense.

1:40 - Ball is passed around the top of the key. OSU guy decides to launch a 3 from the logo and makes it. Can’t really blame JN for not getting out that far as it was well beyond NBA. JN -3 Flat footed

30.2 – JBo gets caught behind the high post and over commits closing out to the top of the key letting the guy blow by him for a pull up 2. JBo -2 Flat footed

JBo played top of the zone almost the entire time they played it the first half. 1st half defense

19:32 – Zone starting second half. Connor ends up in no mans land on the corner and decides to cut off the baseline when Luka is sitting there leaving a wide open 3. CM -3 Not understanding help defense.

18:18 – OSU drives down side of the lane, LG has him but CM decides to come from behind and smack the ball out of his hand and gets the foul. Terrible decision. OSU makes 2 free throws. CM -2 Mental lapse

16:43 – After a fight for offensive rebound and JBo not recovering trying to run out defense for a open 3, Jbo doesn’t drop down into the lane fast enough and ends up fouling the OSU shooter. JBo -2 Mental lapse.

15:32 – No one stops the wing player from driving to the hoop, several guys swat at the ball and LG ultimately picks up the foul. OSU makes one. LG -1 Not understanding help defense.

14:08 – Ball gets into the post, once again CM comes from behind when LG has the guy and fouls the jump shooter sending him to the line. CM -1 Mental lapse.

13:40 – Ball gets thrown to the corner and CM sags in too far and can’t recover fast enough for the wing shooter. Open 3. CM -3 Mental lapse

13:19 – After JBo chucks up a stupid 3 in the beginning of the possession, JN just totally loses train of thought and decides he needs to go to his spot in the zone rather than defending the guy coming off the exchange to his side. Open 3. JN -3 Mental lapse

12:44 – After a made basket we setup our zone. We have no clue who should be guarding who as the ball comes down the court. We have 3 guys guarding 2 on one side and 1 guy guarding 2 on the other. OSU drives the lane and gets an easy 2. Horrible. Team -2 Mental lapse

12:10 – After JBo tries to save the rebound out of bounds, OSU gets the ball and the top guy flashes to the lane. PM makes zero attempt at stopping the guy and stares at him. Luka steps up and ball is passed to his man then Luka gets the foul. Terrible by PM not to step up. PM -2 Mental lapse

11:52 – After JN gets swatted for being weak at the rim, OSU goes on a fast break. JBo decides to swipe at the ball instead of running back on defense leaving JW on a 2 on 1 bad decision. JW gets the foul. JBo -1 Mental lapse

10:41 – JW Doesn’t recover fast enough at the top of the key and the OSU guy launches an ill-advised 3 that banks in. Really tough break there. JW -3 Not understanding help defense.

10:21 – We have our press on. JBo has his back to the guy on the wing when he should be in front of him. He decides to stay with the guy 30 ft from the hoop. OSU with the layup. JBo -2 Mental lapse.

8:47 – After an offensive rebound PM jumps out too hard on the wing and the OSU guard goes by him for a layup. PM -2. Flat footed

8:12 – Ball get tossed to the baseline after PM completely loses track of his man and gets backdoored. PM -2. Mental lapse.

7:41 – JBo gets abused on a drive from the wing that results in a loose ball that goes to OSU for a jumper. JBo -2 Flat footed.

5:44 – This series is hard to blame on anyone. There looked to be 2 fouls on the rebound by OSU and they weren’t called. One shot and a tip in after a scrambled for the rebound. Team -2. Flat footed

5:03 – LG is guarding the post and decides to reach around OSU player to deflect the entry pass. Gets called for the foul. Unnecessary. LG -1 Mental lapse

4:25 – JBo decides to go for the pump fake 3 pointer at 5’10” gets faked out and allows the OSU 3 at top of the key. JBo -3 Mental lapse

3:56 – Very next series, JBo decides to suck into the high post when there was nothing there leaving OSU wide open for a 3. JBo -3. Mental lapse

3:26 – JBo’s guy drives causing Garza to slide into the paint to far and he can’t recover in time to pick up the OSU guy in the corner for a 3. LG -3 Not understanding help defense.

2:40 – Connor sluffs off his guy for a moment while the ball is at the top of the key. OSU guard no look passes to the wing for another 3. CM -3 Mental lapse

17.5 – Trapped OSU guard and called for the foul. Team -1

CM & JBo were bad this half. 2nd half defense

When I went through the game, it’s clear to see that JBo is by far our worst defender. Connor was horrid the second half and Keegan was horrid the first half, defensively. JBo was just horrid altogether. He also did play at the top of the zone for most of the game contrary to what others said. I stand by my statement that JBo needs to sit until he gives maximum effort on the defensive end and understands he’s not quick enough to recover so guard the line more and give driving guards some more space. I added a few more non-scoring plays in the first half for JBo because he was not ready to play defense.

If we look at what most of our issues are, it comes down to correctable errors if these guys were taught better on defense. Most of the problems were due to mental lapses by the player or not an understanding of how to play help defense.

Whatever Frans reasons, I don't really consider Jbo a "legasy" recruit per say. Just because his dad played a different sport at Iowa 30 years ago? he had three brothers and all played at other schools. At least IMHO the Murrays are legasy recruits, as was Dev Marble....

They are all guarding to the best of their ability— no one is digging it. Big has some players that are just really hard to guard and many are guards. Do you think “those”not stopping Garza are digging it?????? Our guys are just not as fast as joe but have numerous redeeming assets

Get help. Fast.

You forgot the one he was sitting on the bench and they made a 3 pointer. 🙄
Hope those of you who wanted more time for bench players are watching the first half of the Indiana game.
