Jensen outcoached Fennelly...

Love Jan but there were a few times her subbing seemed odd. Like they had a schedule and they weren’t going to change it no matter what.
ISU is what they are—Crooks and everyone else. You can only coach what you’ve got and I just don’t think they have a lot. And I don’t much care for Bill.
Yes, the rotation seemed scheduled.
However, look back at the game like a boxing match where Iowas rotation kept them fresh and kept working Crooks with body shots. By the end, ISU was worn down and Iowa had more energy. Against TN, Iowa was the tired team at the end with bad results and it looked like Jan made an effort for extra subs all game.

Rotating bodies and playing good D was the difference. It's so nice Jan is emphasizing the defense. They will pay dividends come conference play.

And it wasn't even close.

Just good player rotation from JJ and realizing she could wear Crooks down with a faster paced game.

Fennelly has no offensive strategy other than feeding the post. He has a 5th year senior at PG who is a turnover machine.
Hope he has a lifetime contract.

Who was the Iowa State coach at the end of their bench who was losing his mind yelling at the refs?
He was doing it until the last play of the game.

She has to get Hannah down on block more. Heiden wore Crooks out in 3rd. She didn't just stand behind her she kept making her move. That work in 3rd showed in 4th. Why do we have Hannah 20+foot from basket on 90 % of plays? When Crooks was out why did we not go double bigs down low and pound the boards? We have to make quicker adjustments to player alignments.

Crooks, Brown (who has been a tick off this year) and Ryan is solid but pedestrian, That’s it.

His lifetime contract is his son billy I imagine.

They also lost a starter for the season yesterday.

I will never complain about the subbing patterns or in game personnel management in the women's game after these last 14 years of Fran.

Fennellys son, coach in waiting.
Few years ago, I read on Clone forum that many don't want him as a HC until he has actual HC experiences elsewhere.
Old man Fennelly has had tremendous player turnover the last five years or so.
It's hard to terminate someone that's been there that long, but I sense there's problems behind the scenes with so many upperclassmen leaving.
He just doesn't appear to make very good "in game" adjustments.

It seemed that Affolter and Stuelke really got going in the fourth quarter. It was a fun game to watch. It's too bad Lucy Olsen only has one year of eligibility.

I believe she does different rotations to see what works in each particular game. Honestly who had Stremlow and Guyton on the court during crunch time with the game on the line? Stremlow had a great game and logged 26 minutes, While Jan may have planned rotations she also recognized who was playing well and went with it.

I am in the Taylor Stremlow fan club. She's a dawg.

I'm going to continue to go down w/Hanna's best position for our team is the 5. Offense has zero flow w/her and O'Grady in their together. While smaller than the other teams 5's she's quicker and way more athletic. At both ends. Now obviously Crooks is just a totally different matchup than anyone we play all year. But man the offense just flowed way better w/her at the 5 and opened up the driving lanes plus the 3 pt shooting.

Watched her all through HS. Her HS coach, freshman-junior year, was excellent, she was coached really hard to be fundamentally sound on both ends. It's not surprising to me at all the way she's stepped in. Seems she's the leader/floor general when she is out there.

You mean, in the last quarter right? Not quite true to that point

The game is 40 minutes. Everything done in the first 30 minutes affects the last 10 minutes.

I'm talking the fact that Iowa played three different players against Crooks. Crooks was gasping for air shortly after halftime and the rest of ISU's team is...not good.

Fennelly is what is, which is a good not great coach. He won't be fired because you don't fire guys like him in AD's like ISU's.

I don't think Billy will be the next coach if I had to guess but I'm just not locked in on that program. When some people in this thread were saying he was the coach in waiting I was confused but then I thought maybe I just missed it.

Unfortunately this is a really disappointing year. They got absolutely curb stomped by South Carolina, lost to UNI and Iowa, and let's be honest, they are going to get embarrassed at UConn next week. It happens and it's a bummer.

At least BF hasn't publicly criticized players during TOs like he has a reputation for doing.

There's a reason ISU has had so many gals leave the program with eligibility left.

He's a very tough coach and I don't like that type of coaching. Honestly one of the reasons I've never really gone to games and stuff. I think if you need to be an absolute savage on the sideline and in practice to coach you actually aren't that good at it. He's softened a lot but I do think he's embarrassed players during games before and I just can't respect it.

But he's the coach, I don't get to pick, and I like the players a lot. AJ, Emily Ryan, Addy and Audi, great kids. I root for them but I keep the whole thing at arms length.

ISU coaches all go to the same Xmas family reunion.

Very impressed with Brown and Crooks but IMO Emily Ryan is grossly overrated. I also believe Stuelkes best position is the 5.

I think thats why many were surprised they started the year ranked 8th. Just don't see that level of talent. Still they gave Iowa a game at Carver riding Crooks, so their going to win some games.

I dunno. I'm starting to wonder if this really hard noncon is a good thing or not. They are going to limp out of the noncon with 4 losses. They need to make hay in conference play this year.

To be fair, they had a pretty good run last year with a bunch of freshmen who are now sophomores. As I recall they gave a good Stanford team (the 2 seed) a run for their money in the tourney and actually came kind of close to pulling the upset.

So I can understand why they came in this year ranked highly.

She's a very good point guard. I'd take her in a heartbeat on Iowa. But she is being asked to do way too much-- like shouldering almost all of the creation burden in the backcourt as every other ISU guard is a catch-and-shooter. (Partly a recruiting philosophy but more of a development problem on Fennelly's part IMO.) They next best facilitator on the team is Addy Brown who is a forward.

The ISU backcourt would be much more potent if they incorporated just half of what Drake and Creighton run. But Fennelly has been stuck in his scheme for a long time and it really limits the ceiling of the team. They are wasting so much shooting skill.

Jan deployed our version of the Death lineup and it worked out. It may be how we close out games going forth, shifting Hannah to the 5 and Syd to the 4 (where she played last year). Looks like we have some lineup flexibility, giving us different looks. Our offense has yet to fully click, but the pieces are there.

Some other notes: Hannah cannot play the four if she is unwilling to shoot from the perimeter.
