Jensen outcoached Fennelly...

Jan deployed our version of the Death lineup and it worked out. It may be how we close out games going forth, shifting Hannah to the 5 and Syd to the 4 (where she played last year). Looks like we have some lineup flexibility, giving us different looks. Our offense has yet to fully click, but the pieces are there.

Some other notes: Hannah cannot play the four if she is unwilling to shoot from the perimeter.
It does feel like a black hole on the floor when Hannah is playing out past the 3 point line and it’s obvious the only thing she’s going to do out there is look to pass it around the perimeter. She’s obviously one of our best players but I wish she had at least some ability to shoot from the perimeter. It reminds me of when Connor was an underclassman and the defense would sag off him so much because he couldn’t shoot (he obviously got better at this by the time he graduated).

Very impressed with Brown and Crooks but IMO Emily Ryan is grossly overrated. I also believe Stuelkes best position is the 5.
Brown made her 3s in the opening minutes basically unguarded.

That easy look ended by the 2nd quarter.

She needs to fire 2 or 3 treys a game. No reason not to. Other than Guyton I don't have much confidence watching that anyone can shoot.

Agree.

Much like last year when Gabbie struggled early, but Marshall had a track record.
Feuerbach and McCabe don't have anything in their past to indicate their perimeter shooting will improve.

The 3s Feuerbach made certainly came at a good time last night. Helped bring iowa back from that -10pt deficit. One with the defender right in front of her. Big makes.

Lucy was 0-4, but they were all open looks, and so close to putting them in.

Guyton currently on target and riding some great confidence.

Syd entered the chat.

*Three point shooting is an odd thing. Even the best (Clark, Ionescu, Plum, etc.) often have games where they start out like 1-8 until it starts going in. A real question how much volume shooting players get to find that average.

Jan did a great job last night with the exception of our post defense against Crooks. We consistently let her establish herself too deep in the low block which allowed her to basically shoot layups.

I believe she does different rotations to see what works in each particular game. Honestly who had Stremlow and Guyton on the court during crunch time with the game on the line? Stremlow had a great game and logged 26 minutes, While Jan may have planned rotations she also recognized who was playing well and went with it.
And Guyton didn't hesitate in nailing a clutch '3' w/ 0:45 to play to push it to a 3 score game. Impressed.

Fennelly is what is, which is a good not great coach. He won't be fired because you don't fire guys like him in AD's like ISU's.

I don't think Billy will be the next coach if I had to guess but I'm just not locked in on that program. When some people in this thread were saying he was the coach in waiting I was confused but then I thought maybe I just missed it.

Unfortunately this is a really disappointing year. They got absolutely curb stomped by South Carolina, lost to UNI and Iowa, and let's be honest, they are going to get embarrassed at UConn next week. It happens and it's a bummer.

4 things…

Never been a Fennelly fan and the hypocrisy some Iowa State fans have for Kirk for rent makes me chuckle because old bills had plenty of his own internal issues.

2nd, the season isn’t over and they are still a decent team.

3rd, they were a tick overrated because of their late season run

And finally their guard play is their Achilles heel

She’s tough to handle that deep.

They are not going to switch Hannah to the 4 except for situationally offense/defense.

I think thats why many were surprised they started the year ranked 8th. Just don't see that level of talent. Still they gave Iowa a game at Carver riding Crooks, so their going to win some games.

They will…I expected Iowa to blow them out. I didn’t expect them to shoot lights out.

She's a very good point guard. I'd take her in a heartbeat on Iowa. But she is being asked to do way too much-- like shouldering almost all of the creation burden in the backcourt as every other ISU guard is a catch-and-shooter. (Partly a recruiting philosophy but more of a development problem on Fennelly's part IMO.) They next best facilitator on the team is Addy Brown who is a forward.

The ISU backcourt would be much more potent if they incorporated just half of what Drake and Creighton run. But Fennelly has been stuck in his scheme for a long time and it really limits the ceiling of the team. They are wasting so much shooting skill.

Outside of Ryan (who is a limited athlete) their guards are poor. 🤷‍♂️

She does need to shoot some

He's a very tough coach and I don't like that type of coaching. Honestly one of the reasons I've never really gone to games and stuff. I think if you need to be an absolute savage on the sideline and in practice to coach you actually aren't that good at it. He's softened a lot but I do think he's embarrassed players during games before and I just can't respect it.

But he's the coach, I don't get to pick, and I like the players a lot. AJ, Emily Ryan, Addy and Audi, great kids. I root for them but I keep the whole thing at arms length.
If he would have been in my face screaming at me like he was at Emily Ryan last night he'd still be knocked out.

That's why so many kids have left the program.

BF is a raging alcoholic.
And no one on the staff has the courage to step in and stop it.

Just a tick overrated?!! Good lord you’re an idiot.

The folks on CycloneFanatic who defend him say that's his method for purging weak players from the program. :)

And it wasn't even close.

Just good player rotation from JJ and realizing she could wear Crooks down with a faster paced game.

Fennelly has no offensive strategy other than feeding the post. He has a 5th year senior at PG who is a turnover machine.
Hope he has a lifetime contract.
Jensen > Fennelly

Been that way for a while now.

I love Stremlow's intensity on defense. However, I am not so sure about her shooting. The first game or 2 she hit some threes and I thought WOW, she is good. But the next several games I don't think she hit many (or any). I am too lazy to look it up! LOL

Stremlow doesn't shoot much. She's made a few and missed a few. Hard to know what her percentage would be with 5-10 shots. I think at this point she's not viewing herself as a first option, and just looking to make a better play deeper into the shot clock.

Of course, if she were to start gaining some confidence putting it in, it would be hard to keep her off the court.

Iowa is 10 games into a season where four starters are new (three counting Syd’s post season starts last year). Three of the starters lost started almost every game together for four years. Jan is still figuring out the best combinations, while bringing five freshmen up to speed. Most teams in a similar situation would be 5-5 right now. Jan and staff have done a remarkable job. I still believe the Iowa WBB team will be one of the best teams in the BIG come z March.

Your thinking of Mellangi. She made several in the early games, and has struggled since. I don't think Stremlow's even shot 5 or 6 threes all season.

A lot of bad coaching decisions today

I still believe in Jan but her lack of putting players in the best spots to succeed are mounting.

Tell me what is exactly mounting in a 2 loss season? And I’m serious. Not trying to be a jerk, but I’d like to see what your complaints are.

Let’s start with our two best guards turning the ball over 12 times… What do you want to do with them, bench’em?

Again, I sincerely want to know what you consider bad coaching decisions and not putting players in a position to succeed?

Mellangi was 6 for 22 in first 5 games and 2 for 9 the next 5 games from three. The fourth game she was 3 for 7 which is what I remember from early games.... Stremlow was 1 for 4 the first 5 games and 1 for 3 the next 5 games. So Stremlow took only 7 three pt attempts in 10 games. She also only took 6 two pt shots all season!!! Sort of strange numbers.
Of course before tonight, Kylie was shoot 24% from 3.

Inbounds set up is a mess, should have Lucy be primary passer.

Not getting Ava more minutes, AOG really struggles with quicker post defenders.

Coach our guards to dribble drive more and not settle for 3’s.

Lucy and Guyton should be on floor together more.

The turnover problem stems mostly from lazy passes and getting trapped in bad spots on the floor.

Crooks scores a bunch, but with her defense, she might be close to a "net negative".

ISU just doesn't have much talent around her. And Fennelly must not emphasize defense.

Losing to UConn isn't necessarily a bad loss. But losing by 30 + is embarrassing for any team ranked top ten in the preseason.
ISU is really fortunate that the Big12 is a dogshit conference in WBB.
