I always kind of felt for the guy. Admittedly I felt for Maynard(MSU) more, but 157 was RIDICULOUS during that stretch, especially in the B1G. I actually thought his run to the Finals his Junior year was one of the most improbable I had seen. He had yet to even AA and had to beat Schlatter, Tirapelle and Percival to make the Finals.
During his 4 years he had these guys in his own Conference: Luke Becker(8th,4th,1st,4th), Ryan Bertin(6th,1st,3rd, 1st), Alex Tirapelle(2nd,4th,R12,R12), Gray Maynard(1-2,8th,7th,7th), C.P. Schlatter(R12,2-2,6th,1-2)Keaton Anderson (1x AA 6th), but battled a ton of injuries and was a MONSTER when healthy, Brandon Becker(5th,7th,R12,4th), and Craig Henning( 1-2,8th,2nd,DNQ-back before the current at large system), Even Nate Galloway was a 4x NCAA qualifier who won matches in every NCAA he competed in and Nate Wachter was R12 for PSU the year Galloway redshirted.
On top of that, 157 had Shane Roller(2-2,3rd,4th,3rd), Scott Owen(1-2,R12, 5th,5th), Derek Zinck(8th,R12,0-2,5th), Matt Gentry(1-2,R12,1st,R12), Jake Percival(4th,5th,2nd,3rd), Brian Stith(DNQ,6th,2nd,R12), Travis Paulson(6th,R12,6th,5th), Trent Paulson(2-2,4th,4th,1st), Phillip Simpson(R12,3rd,8th,2nd) and Ben Cherrington(0-2,1-2,DNQ,1st) Even Johny Hendricks wrestled his 1st year, taking 5th before moving up and going 1st,1st,2nd at 165.
Finally, another way to see the crazy depth is you had guys like Gentry, Tirapelle, Stith and Henning make the Finals and not making AA status in years after. Even crazier, you had a guy like Ben Cherrington not even sniff making AA, before having an undefeated NCAA Champ season in his Senior year!
