This is a the paragraph on Joe Wieskamp.

Joe Wieskamp – 2018 – G/F – Iowa Barnstormers

Iowa has to be thrilled about this pickup. Wieskamp is a terrific all-around scorer and player and absolutely dominated during Wednesday’s win over SYF Players. Wieskamp scored all 20 of his points in the first half as the Barnstormers put the game away early and won by 20. Wieskamp is as versatile as it gets for a wing. He can post up effectively, stretch the floor with his three-point shooting, and pull-up from mid-range. Wieskamp has also greatly improved his transition play and finishing against contact. He showed no inability to absorb hits and finish over and around shot blockers.

Who ever thought that we'd establish a terrific pipeline of talent from within the state? National talent.

With Joe and Connor and Pat in place, it just makes one drool. Granted, they've not even seen the floor, but my God.

Hawksense...WTF?Are you wetting yourself? I can get excited about Joe as he really has earned a national rep ( I am also from the Muscatine area so I get updates from friends still in the area). Connor and Pat are "Hawkeyes" due to Dad's job and are above average MBB talent so far. But, let's not kid ourselves on that premise. Dad was hired to Iowa and they came along as a family package.

Securing homegrown kid is very good news but if Iowa is to become an annual NCAA tournament dancer, Iowa needs more quality Top 75 kids than what the state of Iowa produces. Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri should be the top recruiting states for Iowa Men's Basketball. Better chance of landing a kid that can have their parents and the athlete visit the facilities more than once before committing. Also, less likely to claim homesickness and transfer out. Iowa's East coast recruiting has only really yielded one (Basabe) guy. Fran's East coast ties seem to connections to under the radar D-1 prospects and Iowa might do better scouting and recruiting in Serbia like the NBA does.

Look how excited people are of the talents of a top 75 freshman like Tyler Cook brings to the program. Joe is truly national level talent. Hope Iowa can land more of these top 75 kids and from other than the state of Iowa.

^^^ Three Big Ten teams have made the last three NCAA Tournaments. Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa. Not one player on the Iowa squad, from outside of Iowa, has been ranked in Rivals top 150 during that time. That is unless one wants to say Gesell was from Nebraska, which that is pretty much splitting hairs.

And let's talk about our top 150 kids from Iowa that were on some or all of the last three squads. Oglesby. Gesell. Woodbury. Uthoff. Is it fair to say three of those four were targets of a lot of fan criticism? Meanwhile it was Marble, White, Uthoff and now Jok that were making All Big Ten teams. Now, I'm not going to pick on any Iowa player that puts his guts on the line in front of us season after season. I appreciate the guys.

But my point is an arbitrary figure like "top 75" isn't necessary. And it's a good thing it isn't because most of the top 75 kids are either going to the elites or staying close to home.

What Iowa needs, is to keep doing exactly what McCaffery does. Works his rear off to get the best talent he can find, and coaches 'em up to compete.

It easy to forget that Weiskamp just recently completed his sophomore high school year. Maybe its just me but it seems like he has been talked about a really long time already. I can easily see a full beard and a family by the Fall of 2018.

thanks for the perspective, nu2u. He's got a ways to go before he gets here. A lot can happen, in the meantime.

Curious -did you intentionally leave the state of Minnesota off your list?

I agree 100% with everything you just wrote. Honest question, though, do you not consider Jok an Iowa kid? I know he's from Sudan, but he played his high school ball in Iowa.

I loved Tom Davis.

However, Kansas and North Carolina used to come into the state of Iowa and steal our instate stud players.

Fran is not allowing that now.

What has changed? Just better, more aggressive recruiting? Was Roy Williams really that hard to say "no" to?

Who went to North Carolina on Dr. Tom's watch?

Raef LaFrentz is the only player Dr. Tom lost to Roy Williams, and Raef wanted to play for Kansas, that was his dream. Much like Marcus Page, he grew up wanting to play for North Carolina.

Collison and Hinrich though that was around the time Iowa didn't renew Davis.

Yeah, and like McCabe each played on at least one of the last three teams, but neither was in the Rivals 150.

Yes it was.... Davis would not have been there for their Fr. seasons. Hinrich was headed to ISU until Floyd to the Chicago Bulls job, and Collison likely would have been a Hawkeye if Dr. Tom stayed or Bob would have kept the Collision family in the loop as to who we were going to replace Dr. Tom with. You can put Collison to Kansas on Bowlsby.

I should have worded my post more carefully. The point was that under Dr Tom, we lost the very best state of Iowa players to Roy Williams. Critics of Dr Tom complained about his inability to keep the instate kids home (especially the good ones). Davis' last year at Iowa was 1998-1999.

Three players lost to Roy Williams when Roy was at Kansas:

Raef LaFrenz played high school ball from 1994-1998
Nick Collison played high school ball from 1997-2000
Kirk Hinrich played high school ball from 1997-2000

With Lickliter's failures, keeping the instate kids home became even more difficult.

Other players from Iowa who went to North Carolina and who played for Roy Williams:

Harrison Barnes played for Ames High from 2007-2010
Marcus Paige played at Linn Marr from 2009-2012.

Those 5 players listed could have helped Iowa win a lot of games. Instead, they went elsewhere, while the Iowa program struggled.

Davis was not criticized for losing Collison, or Hinrich because he was a lame duck coach when they decided on Kansas. They were in the 1999 Kansas recruiting class.

True, but Davis wasnt landing either anyway. Both were KU bound.

Facepalm? Neither kid was ever going to Iowa
Conventional wisdom is that they would have come to Iowa had Bowlsby not fired Tom. You really have to wonder what Bowlsby was thinking. I understand being fed up with the Doc's complacency, but he handled it terribly and it set Iowa basketball back 10 years. At least we are on track now.

Collison would have played for Dr. Tom. Kirk was going to ISU to play for Tim Floyd but he left to take the Bulls job and when Iowa let Dr. Tom's contract expire the Collison's where left in the dark about the future and told to just wait till spring signing period as we'd have a new coach then.

Well, that didn't happen of course.

Bowlsby should have fired Dr Tom. Instead, Tom did not recruit for an entire year and was a lame duck for an entire year. And you are right; it really set the program back.

I'd put money on collison playing for dr tom at iowa

When I was in HS kid from our school played on Collison's AAU team, Martin Brothers. Remember asking him what Iowa's chances were. Said he was split between the two but when Iowa made Davis a lame duck coach was a no brainer.

This is precisely correct. Hinrich was never going to Iowa, but he was going to play for ISU under Floyd. Collison was strongly leaning to Iowa until Bowlsby goofed it up.

Some posters are pointing out that we didn't get Harrison Barnes, either. Seriously? Do you think Iowa even had a 1/10th of 1% chance? No. If he stayed in state he was going to ISU.

Dr. Tom tried VERY hard for LaFrentz, but Raef's dad made sure he went to Kansas. It was an uphill climb from the outset.

Marcus Paige would have made an incredible difference the last 4 years, but Fran was in his first year and ... didn't really have a chance, even though he pushed hard. The mistake may have been not recruiting Washpun really hard at the same time. After Paige turned us down, he tried to get in on Wes, but Fran was a little too late to the party and Wes decided to go to Tennessee, where he only lasted a year before transferring back to UNI.

agreed. however, not being able to keep the instate kids was a big reason Dr Tom could never get the Iowa program over the hump.
You listed one big instate miss in LaFrentz. Who were the others? Nearly all the instate talent Dr Tom recruited ended up at Iowa. He got a lot of flack for LaFrentz because he landed other top Iowa talent, and fans/administrators assumed Raef was no different. IMO it was out of state recruiting, and the instate recruits that didn't pan out (i.e. Skinner, Tubbs, etc) that led Bowlsby to the conclusion we could do better.

Huh? There was a good chance Collison would have gone to Iowa had Davis not been let go. And other than LaFrentz, what big in-state kid did Tom Davis miss out on?

Frankly, one of the major criticisms of Tom Davis in his latter years at Iowa was he relied too much on Iowa kids and was a mediocre recruiter.
