Joe Wieskamp went for 42 points and 16 rebounds. He sure is having an unbelievable year. What is his game like? Drive and pull up, dribble drive, catch and shoot, one dribble pull up, 3 pt shot?

How is his defensive game?

From a little I've read, I say the answer to your question is 'yes'. To all the above. I think he has brought the ball up and played center at times.

Those are Jok and Swanigan numbers.

I've seen him several times, you nailed it plus more.

Averaging almost 35 points a game in the last three outings

Mind you this kid is 6-5 going up against a bunch of 6-1 6-2 guys. But the fact that he is able to shoot the way he does is good enough for me. The kid can knock down the open look and he hits some nice fade away jumpers as well. His game is solid and I can't wait until he gets onto campus. I don't care who you are to put up 37 vs top 10 4A school and then to follow it up with a 42pt performance vs a top 5 3A school. That's tough to do, I don't care where your at.

Last weeks game at West alone he had to dill with a 6-4 and a 6-5 kid on him and he scored 25 on them just saying. That game he was double teamed and sometimes three on him.

Maybe he is Gatens II, but can go left? That already is all B1G level as senior.

I normally look for remarks on a player's intangibles in addition to the usual shooting, rebounding, and ball handling skills. I found this comment appealing:

"Pertaining to hustle, that is a major factor in Wieskamp’s productivity on the court and something that really helped him stand out at the couple events we saw him participate. Wieskamp is one of those “never-count-them-out” type of players who plays with 100% energy and does not take plays off on either end of the court." (emphasis added).

Also, unless its a big man, I've noticed that defense is rarely discussed when talking about a recruit's skills. The same article had these very encouraging comments in that regard:

"On the defensive end, Wieskamp showed a willingness to mix it up against opposing post players, again using his length and energy to his advantage to harass and disrupt comfortability for the person he defends. Likewise, because of his overall athleticism, he was able to step out and defend guards when called upon as well. On top of straight defense, the developing forward was excellent on the glass."

Others have remarked about Joe's strong work ethic and other positive personality traits. Sounds like the complete package.

I think he is going to be more athletic than Gatens, at least that is my impression from watching his film. Much like you, Gatens was a very limited jumper.

I really hope Muscatine can make it to at least one state tourney before Wieskamp graduates as that's the only way I will get to see him.

Wieskamp sounds like a complete player with multiple skills. For those who have watched him play, is he more likely to play off guard or the three? Seems like he can play either very well.

That article had him at 6'0" so it must be at least a year or so old. He's 6'5" now as a junior, right? Hell, he could wind up being 6'7" or 6'8" by the time he gets on campus. If he can maintain the ability to hit outside and drive to the basket he could have a Uhl-like skill set. That would be a pretty sweet package to bring off the bench along with the other talent Iowa should have developed by 2018-2019. Future looks good as long as these young guys this year keep developing. This coming offseason is going to be HUGE for Iowa basketball.

We don't need another Uhl! He'll definitely be better than that.

He already has a better jump shot than Uhl.

Uhf's has to use his athleticism more. He is too good of an athlete to just stand out by the 3pt line all day. Post a guy up if you have to.

I was hoping he meant Utoff. I think Joe's more agressive than a young Utoff was. The hardest part about this young stud is we've been hearing glowing reports about him for two years, and he won't be on the team for two more! Hopefully there will be a lot of great basketball before he joins the hawks.

Joe's height is very close to 6'7, but hates that number so he lists himself at 6'6. Don't ask me why. And he played with the hawks this summer in open gyms and from what I've heard by some in attendance, the first day he played subdued and let the older guys go and do there thing, but then he "ate" the next couple days. Apparently was one of if not the best player in the gym.

Wow, the kid is good, but let's take the hype down a notch!
;)

2 phrases I would NOT associate with this top-25 recruit in his class:

Uhl-like and "bringing him off the bench."

They play at Assumption Friday night and can't decide on going to watch them or Ia vs Penn St wrestling which is on BTN channel. Leaning to watch basketball game and watch recording of the meet which might get ugly anyway. :(

He's not more athletic than Gatens. He's a couple inches taller and longer. They're similar. Gatens might be a little quicker. People forget that Gatens turned into a pretty good on-ball defender by the time he was a SR.

And a stonecold scorer as well! Will always have a TON of respect for Matt G! Wanted to be a hawk all his life. Stayed the course, at Iowa, as others jumped ship during the Lickball era! Just wish he could have had one more year with Fran.

I'll take him if he's as good as Gatens. What helps is that he is intelligent, a good student, and is totally dedicated to becoming a better player. I'd like to see his team get to Des Moines, but that area usually has to go through Iowa City West , Bettendorf, CR Kennedy or a Dubuque school, so it'll be tough. The list of great college players from Iowa who have not made it to state is a mile long, from Ricky Davis to Raef LaFrentz to Uthoff (I believe) to Jordan Bohannon, and lots of others. Helps to have a really good team around you. What Pemsl did (winning eight out of nine games at state) is pretty rare. (And Pemsl's 6-7 talented forward teammate missed the entire last game with an injured ankle, or they probably would have won them all.)

Oh, I think we all remember he was a terrific defender his senior year. Part of his problem before that was Lick tried to bulk him up into a power forward.

So Lick tried to do to Gatens what Beilein has done several times to SGs: make them into PFs.

In addition to 42 pts, he was 11 of 13 the first half including 5/7 threes. And a two handed dunk, so he can get up there. Also read he takes the ball back behind his head so the shot is hard to block.

This sounds/reads like a very informative post to me...thank you MagicCoach. Let Joe know I prefer the 6'7" number please ... ;)

All I know, is we have two very good B1G true frosh starters now who were standout HS Iowa BB players just a year ago so this is evidence enough for me that if Joe is tearing it up playing at a very high level against Iowa HS BB talent than the risk that Joe will not be playing at a very high level even as a freshman is very low...

I would compare Joe's skill set/game/potential to a kid playing in Carver tonight ....Kevin Huerter. A kid Fran was after in a big way. Kevin is averaging 8.2 ppg and shooting .369 from the 3 point line as true frosh. Kevin is averaging 27 minutes of PT per game.

WTF are you talking about? I don't recall that at all.

Lickliter had Gaten's playing the 4 at times, I think it was mostly his Freshman year. LIckliter could barely maintain a roster given guys were transferring out as fast as Lickliter could find guys from Kirkwood.

The only "bigs" that Lickliter ever got on campus were 6'9 Brommer, 6'8 Archie, and 6'7 Fuller and 6'5 Eric May. McCabe at 6'7 came in after Lickliter was fired.

Ha, yeah, messed that one up. I meant UTHOFF and I meant bringing him off the bench because he'd be a freshman on what should be a loaded team in 2018-2019. But, yeah, I screwed the pooch there. lol

I don't remember that at all. It's not worth researching. I'll take your and the other's word for it. In my defense, there was an awful lot about the Lickliter years worth forgetting.
I hear you. I wouldn't spend five seconds researching anything that happened when Lick was here either.

Uthoff made it to State 3 years in a row at CR Jeff (2010-2012). Ricky Davis also made it to State (I watched him play there).
