I see Northrup from Linn-Mar is on the Iowa roster this year, listed as a freshman at 157. Some may recall he became "famous" for forfeiting to Cassie Herkelman at the 2011 Iowa state tournament. He graduated HS in 2013 so listing him as a freshman is interesting. Anyone know what he's been up to since high school?

I don't know what he's been doing since graduation or what eligibility he still has, but I've met him, his younger brother and his dad and they are great people. He's a hard worker. If he's improved even a little bit since HS he will be a great addition and I believe he has enough fight in him to contend for a spot at some point. Welcome aboard young man.

His reasoning to forfeit to Cassie was religious in nature right? Something about viewing wrestling as combat and not wanting to enter combat with women?
Spit balling here: maybe he was on a mission of sorts?

I don't know the exact reason why he didn't wrestler her but that was his choice which he's freely able to make so I'm OK with it.

I didn't bring that up to rehash something from 5-6 years ago. I'm really intrigued about his path to the Iowa room.

Yes. I remember him giving a very gracious interview...he said he respected everything she had accomplished but his religion etc.

The kids are growing up in weird times. They are being told that nobody should be treated differently and that girls can do anything boys can do...except when it doesn't benefit the girls. For example, saw a teenage fight video that was shared on Facebook. A female is yelling at a kid, getting up in his face, and pushing him. He tells her to back off and tries to hold her back...she starts swinging at him. He promptly headlocks and tosses her...even trapped an arm. She hits her head and ends up going into convulsions. She ended up fine.

I have a deeper respect for female wrestling but think they should stick to wrestling each other.

There shouldn't be any girls allowed to compete in a boys sport just because its not offered to them. If Girls are allowed to play football or wrestle then any tall boy who isn't out for football should be allowed to play volleyball and just dominate the net. IMO, Some boy needs to try this to get IHSAA to realize this is the reverse situation so no one gets to do it. Period!

Boys/Men don't play volleyball?

I know he was helping out at Linn Mar while his younger brother was still wrestling. I do not know for certain if he was attending Kirkwood or anything but I know he was working, possibly trying to save money for college. He comes from a large family where only one parent works, so I'd guess he is pretty much on his own as far as paying for college. He probably could have gone D3 right out of HS to wrestle and gotten some financial aid if he had wanted to. He was home schooled growing up, living a very religious life style which was the main reason he did not wrestle his match at state. Quality kid, from a quality family. Be interesting to see how he handles a place like he UofI. Nothing but the best of luck to the kid.

Thanks for this reply. Gives some insight about the question I asked without delving into the other stuff. I appreciate it.

Pretty sure this battle has already been fought in Iowa. The reasoning is that a girl playing football or wrestling against boys has no natural physical advantages over the boys, whereas a boy playing against girls would. I believe a couple of boys did in fact go out for the girls volleyball team and were finally allowed to play but only in JV competition. Essentially, the IHSAA and IGHSAA have agreed that if there is no sanctioned comparative sport, then girls can play on boys team. However, boys cannot participate on girls team due to the physical advantages. I know it doesn't seem fair, but it makes sense to me when you look at the big picture and what the goals of these two organizations are.

He should still have all 4-5 years. I thought the eligibility doesn't start until the student enrolls in college.

I would assume that could be why he's listed as a freshman. And one of the reasons I'm asking the question.
