Wow, a prominent white man at the turn of the century didn't think too highly of indigenous people. What a god-damned shocker.... wait, he recanted some of those ideas later on in life? Well double god-damned.... whatever should we do?

Nothing.....I vote for doing absolutely nothing and continue to admire the good things John Muir did in his life

Sorry....that’s not going to cut it with today’s liberals.

He’s gotta go. No more Muir Woods. Going to have to rename some parks and schools I guess.

Oh well.

I'm not as in tune with cancel culture as our conservative posters, but after reading the LA Times what does being canceled in this context mean?

Are they not supposed to acknowledge history?

Shouldn't this be the goal of the movement, to educate and change hearts/minds?

That review found that Muir held bigoted views toward Indians (“he used such negative terms as ‘dirty,’ ‘garrulous as jays,’ ‘Superstitious,’ ‘deadly,’ ‘lazy,’ ‘squirrelish,’ and ‘wife stealing’ to describe California Indians,” the report said). But later in life, he came to admire their stewardship of the land and expressed concern about the cruel ways they were treated.

Acknowledge yes.

When they start taking his name off of parks, schools and memorials I’d consider that cancelled.

I did. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if his views being ‘acknowledged’ is all that happens.

Well I regret to share the news, but the Sierra Club is not stopping at just acknowledgement.... they're also shifting around some money in their budget for diversity initiatives. Is that an aspect of being cancelled or is that OK?

I think it’s silly and unnecessary. If they want to change their hiring practices to be more diverse that’s fine. If I’m joining or donating to the Sierra Club I would want my money going towards environmental and conservation projects, but they are free to do as they wish.

That is a good point. I have given to them before. Diversity intitiatives? Pffft.

Looks like I will look more to the Nature Conservancy.

Mr. Muir was born in Scotland and I remember seeing his name on some things there. ... a habitat or conservatory of some sort in the Hebrides and a stature? I guess that stuff is about to be canceled.

Scotland is really big on flowers, plant life, trees and so on. Somehow, I remember John Muir being linked to various things natural.

I went through one castle and it was surrounded by flower beds and gardens and so on with a zillion different varieties on display. Each individual flower bed had a plaque with designations of the various flowers and some history of where they were from. John Muir was associated with some of the varieties ... just how, I do not remember.
