Bigger question is who does Coleman Scott bring in for an assistant
I'm guessing this improves their chances of getting Jax and others.
I always thought he presented a classy image for the sport - in interviews and such that is. I know a lot of people complain about him being a whiner, but he seemed all class to me.
I wonder if he knew that he was only 2 dual meet victories away from Harold Nichols as the number 2 winningest coach. He may have stayed another year just to move into the number 2 spot. Kidding of course.

He was good for the sport and the OSU / Iowa rivalry. I kinda liked him but also kinda hated him when Hawks were wrestling his boys.
Congratulations on a wonderful career coach smith. The wrestling community will miss you. Enjoy the retirement.
I've always enjoyed our rivalry with Oklahoma State and John Smith. Fun to complain about their style but always had respect for their "brand". Wish him nothing but the best, and if he wants to do some color commentary again I really enjoyed his insight.

I think of John Smith the same as TnT great coaches and I don't think there really is a lot of suitable coaches to take over legendary programs. That being said TnT probably do have a couple of years left and here wishing for the best for both programs.🍻

Respect the heck out of Coach Smith. They should give him the visiting coaches seat from carver as a retirement gift. Make the new one orange with a plaque on the bottom side in his honor.
Maybe OSU's AD was extrapolating your comments here to their situation and decided the time for action was now

Smith was willing to wrestle Iowa at Kinnick when they set the attendance mark.
I've seen him wrestle a few times in person and he was so slick and just lightning fast. I never appreciated his edge of the mat style but it worked for him and he won Gold so hats off to him for all that he has done for the sport.
Least of his many talents is that he's the best wrestling broadcaster I've heard. His call of Steveson winning gold was classic. "Fake snap, fake snap, fake snap, go get it, go get it, go get it. There you go."

Both can be true. He may have been ready to retire AND was pushed out for Scott. This retirement plan started last year. This was not a decision made last week.
