JOK in OT

We get beat by 20 if he doesn't play

Thats absurd. We got back into the game with the full court pressure, mostly because Minnesota kept turning it over.

Jok was fine, but its the rest of the team going into a shell that makes it nearly impossible to win.

The defense will adjust and they did.

Obviously Jok is a great player and was instrumental in getting the Hawks back in the game. However, that doesn't mean that we can't be critical of the fact that he is incredibly weak with the basketball as a senior. Especially in late game/critical situations.

Exactly.

Five turnovers for a senior in a game as important as last night is too many. Clearly, he is our top scorer so the offense has to flow through him. The thing is, it has to flow through him, not stop. If there is nothing there, he needs to keep the ball moving. I have seen too many turnovers at the top of the key where he is trying to create his own shot by driving and it just doesn’t work consistently enough. What’s worse is when it turns into quick baskets the other way. Given our rebounding and free throw deficiencies, we absolutely have to limit turnovers.

Every basketball player, every athlete , every person has flaws. I do not understand why some fans always seem to find that flaw in our players and coaches and never let it go. They just have to trash our people. They relish in it and claim that they have a right to be critical. The reality is they love to hate on successful people.

Nope.

People criticize losing not winning.

Success = winning. No one gets criticized for winning.

No, some people complain about anything and everything. They complain if we only win by 10 points because they think we should have won by 20. They complain about a winning program because they expect to win even more games. They complain because we are not an elite program when they think we should be. During the Lick years they had a right to complain, but there were fans who complained about Lute Olson. There was very little interest among the coaches for the Iowa job after the way Lick left it in shambles and it wasn't just the condition of the program that kept some coaches away. It was the unreasonable expectations that a big portion of the Iowa fans have for our team. Fortunately, we got Fran and he has turned us back around with a big upside coming and he has done it the Iowa way, without cheating and doing it clean. He has provided us with entertaining basketball again and still some people complain and ,yes, we are winning. Just not enough for some who regardless, will always complain. To say that no one gets criticized for winning is just not true especially in Iowa.

I love JOK as a scorer, but can't stand how weak he is with the basketball. The first possession in OT was a bad start for OT and the TO with 45 seconds to go is inexcusable for a senior.

I am much more concerned with his defense. He needs to stick to his guy like glue!

Jok has the ability to be an outstanding defender. That is what drives me nutty. He simply does not apply himself.

I see two situations with Jok that cause problems. First, he is a lazy defensive player so this not only leaves his guy open but sends a wrong message to the team. If you recall his freshman year, Fran made comments that when his defense improved he would get more PT. there was some improvement, but still many lapses. Which gets to the second point, he can be such a prolific scorer that Fran is allowing the defensive weakness so he can have the offense, but unfortunately Fran is forcing the offense through Jok. This is not a new issue for Fran as he has done this several times in his tenure with Gatens, Marble, White and Uthoff. Several of those guys were stronger or able to drive to the whole to create opportunities for themselves to teammates. Jok is not great and taking the ball to the whole and his back condition has made that more difficult too. When Jok is able to move some, he has done a pretty job of passing, but we rely on his jump shot a lot and it is a jump shot everyone wants. If you read these as criticism of Jok, so be it, but the real problem IMO is with the system that Fran utilizes especially on offense when he has a top offensive weapon
