Jordan looking good health wise

If Jordan comes back healthy next year, we might have the best back court in many years at Iowa.
I am guessing Garza & Weezy will get evaluated by the NBA; i hope they are both told to go back to college and work on their game ;)

my goodness; we are scoring 80 ppg with the current 8 man rotation; we lose Kriener but add JBo, Nunge & PMac.

Who wins? That team was a 3 seed, and Big Ten Tournament Champs. However I think next years team would win.

Garza ..........Hansen
Weiskamp ..........Brunner
Frederick ..........Haluska
Bohannon ..........Horner
Toussant ..........Henderson

That 2005-2006 team was the best defensive team in the country that year. It would be really fun to watch them play each other.

I would be surprised if both Garza and Weezy stay next year. Being up for player of the year nationally gives Luka a lot of money to turn down.

You know what I mean, NBA teams will have to up the ante to get his services if he gets the award. Not that difficult to comprehend.

Are you a GM of one of those teams? NPOY means nothing?

it doesn’t mean a ton. The college game is very different than the pro game. I think Garza can be a good pro, but it’s not like a NPOY is going to make him a lottery pick. He’ll be evaluated based on how his game fits in the NBA, not the hardware he collects.

Not really. Why would it? It's not given to the best NBA prospect, it's given to the best college player. Those things are not the same (though sometimes they overlap). Even if Garza won he'd probably still be a late second-rounder. It's a nice honor but that's about it.

The one draft projection I’ve seen didn’t have Garza in the first round. It was only one round was shown.

Some have him going in the mid second round. Is that worth leaving college early for? He could easily get traded, stashed, and end up sitting on a farm team somewhere. If he can raise his stock enough to get a first-round grade, I could see him entering the draft this year. But otherwise it wouldn't make sense.

Oh, and yes, it's good to see Jordan getting some shots up. Hope he kills it next year.

Garza may not even seek the NBA Eval from the report from his dad. They know what he needs to improve on, don't really feel they need to go and have his weaknesses emphasized. Defending pick and roll in the NBA is going to be what Luka has to figure out, or he may just opt to play professionally in Europe? I'd been saying that he'd be gone and he may still be, but a lot of that still depends on how this team finishes and what they may feel could be a BigTen and NCAA Title contender returning next year? Or perhaps a repeat BigTen and NCAA Champtionship ;) ;)

He'll do the NBA evaluation. It's worth it just for the experience, even if they don't tell him anything he doesn't already know. It's like a practice job interview. Wieskamp will do it again, too.

It didnt used to be but that didnt stop Cook and others from leaving.
In all fairness I think Tyler was just ready to go, and had convinced himself he could do it. Also don't know how serious he was about school or his families financial situation. The latter is obviously not a concern for Luka's family, but I do think he'll get an evaluation. The last couple of weeks we're hearing a lot more talking heads mention him as a possibly being a solid pro, as his consistent outstanding play has carried throughout conference play.

I’d be surprised if Luka doesn’t come back. I think he’d make an NBA team, but I don’t think there’s any way he’ll ever have as much fun playing in the NBA as he does in college.

In the NBA, even if he has a good career (think Frank Kaminsky who’s averaged ~10 PPG), he’s just another dude. But in college, almost every game is on national TV and he’s a front runner for NPOY and the clear leader of his team. Hopefully Iowa can make a run in the NCAA tournament, and he’d get even more notoriety, and also drive a hunger to make an even deeper run next year.

Given his family is in a pretty good spot financially, there’s no real pressure on him to leave early. Garza also seems to be a perfectionist, and I imagine he still has a few things he’d like to improve in his game before making the leap to play professionally.

Per Don Doxsie’s article, Garza’s dad said they wouldn’t be seeking an NBA eval.

Interesting. I assume that they feel like they already know what he needs to work on. As has been brought out with all the recent stories on Luka, he is in a different orbit then most college players. He has his own team of advisers that he leans on for feedback and advise. Numerous members of his extended family have played high level college, and euro pro ball, and hears from many of them on important manners. Not to mention his high school coaches dad being an NCAA HOF coach with connections.

Bringing this thread back to Jordan... assuming he is healthy, holy shit the floor could be spread. Biggest beneficiary might be Toussaint. I expect him to make a big jump next year.

Assuming everybody returns, Jordan, CJ, Weez, Garza, Nunge all stretch the floor. Lots of space for attacking the paint off the dribble. Hell, maybe Pemsl has enough space and time to get some bench low post scoring. Who knows. He has had no physical setbacks so far this year. Maybe next year he gets his confidence back in his body and game. I think of him like the ACL tear guys. First season back they kind of struggle trusting their body, then the season after they return to something closer to pre-injury.

I will always root for Cordell. Love that kid.

Garza just broke a 20 year old Big Ten record for consecutive double doubles, he’s starting to prove he should be in the NBA conversation.

Frank Kaminsky is a good comparison although he’s a couple of inches taller than Garza. He came back for his senior year after blowing up much like Luka has. He went first round, 9th overall.

Garza needs to improve in certain areas and return for a big senior year and I think he can be a first rounder, not top ten pick like Kaminsky but anywhere in the first round is huge.

Have to consider draft class, too. I think the word is this year’s class is weaker than what is anticipated for 2021 class.

Personally I think both Garza and Weez stay. They’re taking this program to a new level and have very attainable next level next season. The energy is returning to Carver. Neither family is in bad shape financially. Weez is just starting to scratch the surface, just starting to learn how to create for himself off the dribble. Iowa could have the country’s best 5 and a top-three wing next year, with the right parts around them for them to thrive.

IMHO, Garza right now is much better than Kaminsky ever was, FWIW.

And I agree that Garza and Weiskamp are likely to return next year, and with a healthy JBo to go with the rest of the group, wow... Fran may suddenly have the Hawkeyes in the best position they've been in for decades, annually contending for the Big Ten title and extended NCAA runs. Finishing this year strong certainly would advance that narrative.

And to that point. If Iowa's legislature follows the trend and passes the bill that allows student athletes to earn money from their likeness rights, than I think that can only help keep some kids that are on the fence from jumping early. If I can make some money to help my family and finish my career and get a degree?

The thought of healthy Garza, Weezy, CJF and JoBo is tantalizing.
Plus Connor "Swiss Army Knife Glue Guy" McCaffrey.
Plus Sophomore Joe Toussaint.
Plus Nunge and PMac.
Plus the potential of one or more true freshman elevating faster than anticipated? #KeeganMurray.

In addition to health, the obvious concern is will Garza and Weezy return next year?
IMO Weezy needs more time to work on his strength and tighten up the outside shot a little bit. I would guess 95% confidence he returns for Junior year.
Garza is more of a concern. Given high likelihood of 1st team all American + national player of the year, you have to wonder what else he could accomplish individually at the college level?
I put him at 50/50.
